I'd say that Microsoft's PC gaming initiatives over the last six years or so have been almost exactly like the Sonic Cycle, with the key difference being that no one ever has high hopes for Microsoft's PC gaming initiatives.
I want to say Microsoft has actually been involved in a few good games in the last six years. Sonic Team? Hmmmm.....
Well, I was talking about their overall plan for PC gaming, not just the games themselves. And Sonic Team? Well, that's kinda my point. Sonic Colors was actually genuinely good, but it wasn't part of the Sonic Cycle because no one really got excited for it during its development other than TSR.
It's not going to be released unless you buy the old Mega Man Legends 3.
So this is just you mocking my incredibly poor post written inbetween calls phrasing correct? :P
If you like.
But it was really me mocking Capcom for 1) threatening to not release games unless you buy the previous one and 2) releasing the same game over and over again.
I think the threat was you had to buy the MML3 "prototype" version or they might not release it, the prototype being like a dozen missions that are supposed to act as a prequel or something
But yeah, not real happy with that descision. Annoyingly MML3 would get me to pick up a 3DS in a heartbeat but I'm not dropping the cash on one for a demo and a "maybe"

MML3 will never get released
That is my prediction
Capcom doesn't want to develop the game, and the whole "if everyone buys the prototype version we'll develop it" just reeks of them leaving an easy out for themselves.
Welp, looks like sales of the Prototype version were lower than we had been hoping. And MML3 is cancelled just like that.
Much like how the sales for both ResEvil 4 and the Umbrella Chronicles were a "test" for a "true" Res evil on the Wii. They both sold well and Capcom kept it's word and released a full Resident Evil game to take advantage of the interest.....

Capcom promised similar things with the PSP remakes of mega man and Ghosts and Goblins. Saying if they sell well new games in the series would be made for the PSP which never happened.
God Capcom do this all the time its not even funny, On resident evil games alone capcom has promised console exclusives resulting with a port to the lead console less than a year later (see Resident evil CV or Resi 4 etc..). Remember how Capcom said they didn't want loads of versions of Street Fighter 4 to 'taint' the series and online community mere weeks before announcing the arcade edition.
Maybe im just bitter not seeing a sequel to 'Gregory's Horror Show'..
Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed may have proved that the annual release model can be a success outside of the sports genre, but analyst Michael Pachter has warned others about following the model.
"We question the strategy of annual franchises for any game except sports simulations," he said in a Wedbush Morgan note to investors. "While Activision has been enormously successful with the Call of Duty franchise, we think its success has been largely a function of its online multiplayer offering, with a network effect driving ever higher packaged product sales.
"We are not optimistic that others can replicate that formula, and think that a balance between the EA approach (games every two years) and the Take-Two approach (games every six years) is appropriate.
"It is important to point out that Take-Two has not intentionally brought games out slower than the others, but rather is laser focused on game quality, and its internal studios have delivered phenomenal results. We still think that if Take-Two were able to deliver its key franchises every three or four years instead of every five or six, its share price would appreciate dramatically."
But despite the Call of Duty success, Pachter still foresees potential troubles for the company.
"We continue to believe that Activision shares will be range-bound until the company is able to demonstrate that it can deliver significant profits outside of its Call of Duty and Blizzard businesses," he outlined.
"The company’s Skylander products are promising for this holiday, but we think that the target market (10 and under boys) is relatively small, suggesting only a modest profit contribution."
However, it's not all good news – he also predicts that the overall portable games market will decline at the expense of smartphone gaming growth.
"We continue to believe that handheld game sales will suffer in correlation to the growth of smart phone sales, although we think that the handheld games business will remain a healthy niche for the foreseeable future," he said in an investor note.
Honestly, if neither the 3DS nor the Vita manage to make good cases for themselves I could see this happening.

Isn't that obvious, though? Like saying "if the WiiU doesn't sell well then the PS4 and NextBox will probably sell better."
Well, only if you believe that smartphones are truly competing with the portables now.
The obvious part being that cell phones will continue to grow regardless of anything else. Do you think the success of portables could cut into the success of smart phone sales? I doubt it, which is an indication that they're not strictly competing the same way 3DS and Vita will. For one thing, there's no blockbuster $40 game analogue on cells, for good or ill.
We're never going to see the Vita sell millions and be able to draw the conclusion that this is why iPhone sales are in the crapper. They're still in pretty different markets.
Activision president Bobby Kotick is the latest industry figure to question the PlayStation Vita's chances against the booming and increasingly capable smartphone gaming market.

In a discussion on Sony's new handheld, Kotick told Guardian: "It is a fantastic piece of hardware. Technically, we're super excited about what we can do on it, it's really something incredible.
"The question is, where is the market?" he went on to ponder. "I think the pricing was surprisingly affordable, the product itself is really great - so the questions is, is there a need in the marketplace for a very specialised portable device of that capability?
"Hopefully there will be because it's a really nice product and its very well differentiated from what you can get in even the most capable smartphone or tablet today."
Similar questions have been asked by id tech man John Carmack and, unsurprisingly, Microsoft, while Sony has asserted that smartphones are not a threat to Vita.

I don't see why there couldn't be a blockbuster game with the rise of standardized OSs and marketplaces in cellphones.
Yeah the race to the bottom chokes the ability to have any sort of AAA experience on mobiles. Basically everything's either metric driven where they put so much annoying stuff in that you want to pay to get past it or they do something with gameplay so simple they can shit out tons of content for it and keep you in the game looking at ads forever and a day.

Wasn't Chaos Ring the SquareEnix iOS game that was higher priced, had some good gameplay, and did rather well sales-wise?
I don't remember which title it was, but I'd say there's a market for higher priced and deeper titles. At the same time, simple gameplay is absolutely fine too.

Right. People will pay premium prices if they think they're getting a premium product. It's a question of marketing the software properly.
The issue is that what people consider a premium price has plummeted as part of that race to the bottom. Or you could argue it's the quality people expect a premium product to be at that has risen instead. Either way there's a much less favorable effort-to-profit ratio for all games right now than there was in previous generations that makes companies completely gunshy with trying to put a lot of effort into their products without any sort of guaranteed return.

True, I can't recall them showing much initiative. Still not Sonic Team, but it is disappointing.
Halo 2, released three years after the Xbox as a Windows Vista exclusive (despite having absolutely no technical reason for requiring it).
Alan Wake canceled wholesale for the PC.
These are some goddamned good initiatives.
