Xenogears was a huge, huge deal to me when it came out. I remember feeling like I was playing some massive, groundbreaking opus as a youngster. But man, that game does not hold up at all, visually or thematically.
yeah, Xenogears is very much so a "we have to kill a god/the god" JRPG, which is all the jrpgs, but it was crazy heavy handed with it which doesn't happen anymore. I think 16bit stuff holds up way better than early ps1 era stuff. Even ff7 and ff9, games I love, are a little hard to get back with visually. The the final fantasy games did alot of pre-rendered stuff and painted backgrounds that hold the games together.
Grifter that video is both funny and the stuff of nightmares.
I agree wholeheartedly about many ps1 games not aging well. One thing that doesnt help is a lot of tvs and monitors are getting bigger and wider, so if you play a ps1 game on it it ends up being stretched to fuck or way bigger and on a clearer screen so all the jagged edges are more prominent.
In other news, i got my stephen silver books today! I was wondering where they were.
I'm with you, Napp. FF8 is as underrated as FF7 is overrated, and the Junction system trumps its plot stupidity. And its plot is stupid, but I don't think it's importantly worse than, like, the stupid bait-and-switch ending of FF9.
Napp, from the short time I've known you, I can gather that you basically hate everything most people deem worthy, and you love that which is universally considered garbage.
My fav is when I can get my kiss on with other dudes.

Eh... that's not true at all. Its just easier to get into a discussion if you don't agree about something.
In most cases my views are at least similar to everyone elses but just saying "yep, i agree" doesn't really standout much. So you pretty much only see me talking about something that is different than the general view.
But FF8 is a soild game. If it had a different magic system, everyone would have loved it. As it was, its a little... not fun to constantly draw magic.
edit: actually, if you wouldn't have gotten more magic per-draw and only gotten like, one draw per battle, it would have been a lot better.
I'm thinking that I should get a bicycle and start using that to commute to work. Walking works and all but I think I'd enjoy biking to work more than riding my motorcycle in. It's just too damn hot to walk in some days. I figure biking in will be eco-friendly and quick enough that I won't sweat my bollocks off.

how far is it to your work and how many hills are in the way?

and, to be fair, I really do like FF9 as well. Its ff7 that I never could get into... Cloud's such an huge dick who only gets worse as the game goes on (and he turns into a whiney bitch. His character arc is kind of the complete opposite of Squall's. Squall becomes a decent human being and Cloud completely collapses in his emo-ness). That and the plot makes no sense at all (refer to Adus' LP of FF7)

I don't quite know what to make of it. It's kind of a WTF video but it makes me chuckle every time I watch it too.
Like I literally had a very minor panic attack when he rounded the corner the first time.
I have only a small handful of intense phobias that elicit a "freeze in place, break out in a cold sweat while your heart leaps out of your chest" response. One of them is icebergs, the other is human bodies suddenly jerking around unnaturally.
It didn't help that I watched it within maybe 30 seconds of waking up this morning.

If I actually obey the traffic laws there's one hill to go down and one to go up on the way to work. There's the same deal on the way home. I live about a ten to fifteen minute walk from my office. It's just bloody hot and humid here so the walk can become a grueling task.
I think I might get the Cannondale Bad Boy or Hooligan.

Guys, guys, calm down now
Every Final Fantasy game sucked in its own, special way.
I liked the commercial for Final Fantasy 7. You know, the one that didn't show any gameplay so if you've never heard of Final Fantasy before you'd think it would be some sweet action game, instead of a game where you fight with the power of menus?

Suck it haters.
WE ALL... HAVE AMNESIA???
AND WE WERE RAISED... IN THE SAME... ORPHANAGE???
...
I... I am too impressed by how well they blended that... thing into the environment to be horrified by this.

A bunch of orphans being sent out on missions as mercenaries by their beloved academy just seems...off.
Really, really off.
Meh, that's a small blemish on an otherwise solid tale.
really just squall in general
I dislike him even more than cloud

I liked FFtactics for ps1 best.

sorry but the best one is FFX-2
Knock that off, it tickles.
Dumbest thing ever.
edit: Did anyone play any of the Arc the lad games for ps1?
Okay, that takes the cake.
At least that sword was a reasonable size.
Speaking of which, I read on IGN that the creative director for Halo 4 quit, saying the whole thing had become a "crazy endeavor"
Do you know how incredibly bat-shit crazy you have to get a plotline for the guy who worked on Metal Gear Solid 4 to give up on it?
