The interview took place in January, and right afterwards Dan Hsu rang round a load of stores for stock info and shot it off to Sony. No reply as of yet. They talked about it in last week's EGM Live* podcast.

If I had a decent camera with me and any belief that Jack would pay out, I saw approx. 32 in one day. Costco had 3 pallets of 8, with 1 missing. By my calculations, I should be about $38,000 richer.
Looks like "easy money" from Sony isn't so easy, after all.
In the LiveJournal of someone who wishes to remain anonymous (yes, "does not forgive," we get all that), it was revealed that an e-mail was jokingly sent to Sony regarding recent statements:
Message from Consumer:
To whom it may concern:
In a recent interview with EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) Magazine (found in the March 2007 issue),
SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton stated that he would, and I quote:
"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes,
I'll give you 1200 bucks for it."
Well, at one store alone, a Fry's Electronics located in Phoenix, Arizona, I have taken a picture of
a collection of PLAYSTATION 3 systems for sale. 47 of them to be exact.
I would like to know how I can get in touch with Mr. Tretton so that he can pay me a bounty of
USD$56,400 for the 47 PS3 systems I've found.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Surprisingly, Sony was kind enough to respond, and set the record straight:
Thank you for writing us.
We apologize for any confusion and thank you for your inquiry.
We are able to confirm that the comment in question was directed at the editor of Electronic Gaming
Monthly (EGM) and was merely said to demonstrate that the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment
systems were selling out during the November launch time. It was not a challenge to the general
consumer.
Additionally, we value your input and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Please rest
assured that we will convey your feedback to Sony Computer Entertainment America's ("SCEA")
appropriate management. Again, we apologize for any confusion.
If you have further questions regarding this message, please refer to your email case
number:(edited out for... I don't know, security. Yeah, let's say that.)

So unless your name is Dan Hsu, you probably aren't getting squat, no matter how many PS3s you find.
Sorry, Gabe and Tycho and America at large.

LBD_Nytetrayn, I'm gong to miss poisonmushroom.org. I forgot about it, but during the PA break, its where I got all my news from. Hope everything turns out fine and you can start updating again.
It's odd. Tretton usually knows what he's talking about, and if you read the REST of that interview you'll see that he does generally care about the consumer. It was like he was just out of touch on that particular fact.

I felt that the entire interview smacked of arrogance.
I felt that the entire interview smacked of arrogance.
I don't really get it. To take a quick quote:
"To ultimately be successful, you have to believe that every consumer matters. Not just the consumers in this territory, but consumers worldwide. And not just the hardcore consumer, not just the casual consumer...everybody matters."
Also in the interview he admits that there were major mistakes made with the UMD format. The usual corporate banter is there, but I saw nothing overly arrogant.

It just felt like generic PR stuff to me. I like that he admitted that they made mistakes with UMD, and in another part of the mag he says the PSP viral marketing website was a bad idea. But otherwise, just sounds like the same song and dance that Peter Moore and Reggie do.

There are PR moves, and then there are stupid arrogant statements.

I'm partially a student of public relations, and I can say with certainty that if I would have pre-screened his responses to that interview, I would have given him my professional opinion to scrap talking to Hsu or seriously work on his material.
There was nothing good said throughout. You don't tell people that society has problems or that you have to "educate" anybody. You don't tell lies that are easily refutable and you certainly don't fucking let a reporter take pictures of you looking like a smug prick.
I don't know what is going to happen to Sony's console operations over the next year or so, but I can say that it will have been Sony's fault entirely, one way or the other.

Can you take some quotes from the interview and tell me exactly what you're talking about?

Hey, thanks, that means a lot. Hopefully I can be back in form there sooner than later, I really miss doing it.
But if I don't find a way to make some money, there may not be a PMO at all.

"The problem we have ... is society in general."
Can of worms usually read "do not open."
"We got a lot of press at E3 two years before PS3 launched."
The question was, "How are you measuring this success?"
Why even bring up E3 at all? He could have said any number of things, like Resistance being a top selling game or he could have cited market data, anything.
"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it."
This one needs no further comment.
"Not only did people camp out for them, they resold them at a $2,500 profit overnight - yeah, I'm pretty dissapointed with our launch."
Smug.
"Time magazine ... I did an interview with Time magazine - the guy did his first interview ever on the games industry, touched his first machine two days before that, so I would argue that Time magazine may not be as plugged in to the consumer or the gamer..."
Taking on Time magazine is one thing, but Tretton is referencing the journalist that interviewed him for a seperate article. The article EGM is talking about is a different piece that analyzes the PS3 post-launch.
After this point things start to look up, as they are getting into the topics of online and software support, one of which is an unknown right now and the other is definately a strong suit.
"We have to educate people..."
Nitpick, but I would have gone with "inform."
Oh well. That's about all I'm doing for now.
Upon rereading it, he did do well in spots, but the above quotes and the overall tone could have used some work.
The interview was crap. It was full of corporate speak. He acknowledged some of the failures of the UMDs but then he turned around and blamed it on the movie companies, not Sony. He also said Resistance was the best game ever.

@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
Chances are he'll claim he was misquoted or something.
If Jack wanted to save face, he'd pay up to EGM, and, to turn this debacle into awesome, donate the sum of penny arcade's claim to child's play.
That never happened?
OH GOD MY HISTORY PAPER IS RUINED!
Well, that's what you get for trusting Sony.
This is just a tribute.
