Online pass? Where the heck did this idea come from? Brink's never needed any separate fees to play online; it's the main meat of the game!
Online passes have been introduced in the past year or so to fuck over people who don't want to waste $60 on a new game. I just assumed Brink had it since it is still relatively new.
Oh yeah, that's right. . . gotta make that used-game money back somehow. :?
I'll be taking a break from the game until the DLC hits; don't wanna get too Brinked out before all the fresh stuff. Can't wait to see what other supplementary skills I can try out with the extra level points. Downed Fire? Soldier's Grenade Mastery? Splurging on Gatling Turret?
Yeah, I know; I have multiple characters, so I'm just weighing the possibilities of what skills to apply. Operative's UAV sounds like a lark, if it doesn't render Comms Hack obsolete, that is. Napalm Grenades and Incendiary Mines also sound like fun deterrents. I'd also like to check out the skills that I've been on the fence about/wasn't able to integrate into the styles of my existing characters.
the UAV might actually be useful for busting through clogs that you might get on CCity. if you can safely strafe any spawn camper from behind the starting walls it might make it harder to get trapped as a security team. though i don't know how they will explain it on maps with an enclosed environment. the napalm sounds good too.

Um, how do I only play multiplayer with this? I keep ending up in games where everyone else is a bot.

eventually, you will find yourself playing against people
some times it takes a few games
when you find a person, make a fireteam, so you stick together across servers

I eventually figured out that if you go to Freeplay, choose Public Game, and set the Match Settings to Competition, it requires 10 people before a game can start. In practice, this leads me to an empty server where I wait for half an hour before enough people show up to actually play.
Looking at the Steam stats (I'm on 360), there are...459 people playing. Wow, after only two months? That's depressing; I like what little of it I've been able to actually play.

Yeah, I totally plan on giving Brink another shot when the DLC comes out (havent played since before the netcode fix on the 360). Kinda agree with Milk Ducks about the game. Really wish I had a PC that was Brink capable so that I could play with my pals on it there.

*SIGH*. . . Still waiting on that DLC; how long has it been since Splash Damage submitted it for approval? A couple of weeks ago now?
I'm loathe to say this, but all things considered we might be looking at the one and only Brink DLC if and when it ever gets here. Enjoy it while you can, 'cause I don't see ANYBODY coming back to play after the wait we've had to go through. It's like fate wanted this game to fail miserably from the start. You can't really blame SD after all the work they did to fix it up; there's just been so much unexpected trouble working against it.
It's a crying shame. This makes be both depressed and frustrated to no end considering how much fun it's been.
I rented the game and enjoyed playing. However, what killed it for me is the complete lack of anyone playing multiplayer. This game needs lots of people playing online to have any replayability at all.
Well, here's the thing. It had a pretty decent community on PC and 360 until the time the DLC release window was announced, and people decided to give it a break until then. The DLC still hasn't been released, meaning that all the people who have been waiting are probably either still waiting, or so peeved that it's not here yet that they've since moved on to other things. Either way, you just can't win any more if you want to play some competitive Brink with other players.
it's not looking good, we've got less than 2 weeks left in this month

I definately think you can blame SD for Brink's failure. No lobby system on the 360? Unplayable lag when the game launched? Idiotic aii? There was a lot wrong with the game when it shipped.
Whats really annoyed me though is that I decided to get the last achievement I needed to 100% the game, spot a mine then have an engineer defuse it, and the ai was too stupid to defuse the thing. I'd have bots running over and detonating mines that I spotted, I couldn't spot it then defuse it myself (has to be another engineer), had a medic and an engie bot look at the mine only for the medic to set it off and then an engie bot looked at a spotted mine and ran over it. The very class with the special ability to get rid of them decided it'd be best to set it off.
Bah! I wish this game was playable.

I still think a few more open ended game types would have made the game better. And I'm not strictly talking about TDM. But more like a TF2 style payload or CP type. Or maybe even more of a Splinter cell type deal with mercs hunting operatives. There's so much more that could be done, with relatively few maps or asset changes. To me this game, and its universe, look like so much wasted potential.
Balancing: Lowered Hacker terminal disarm rate to 0.6 (from 0.9)
Spectator mode: Added new HUD displaying objective information
Server Browser: Added dedicated/listen server type filter
Added server information to map loading screens in multiplayer. Server admins can customise this via the following cvars:
Spectator mode: Added faction colors to player names
Spectator mode: Health bars now visible when looking directly at players
Stopwatch mode: Added 10 seconds to each defending team's spawn time
Stopwatch mode: Added support for custom defence respawn timer adjustments via g_stopWatchDefenceRespawnTimerAdjust
Stopwatch mode: Added objective timing information to Stopwatch review screen
Added support for listing players steam id's via the listSteamIds cvar
UI: Added automatic scrolling when typing in chat boxes
UI: Stop context menus receiving focus when they are disabled and inactive
UI: Game now forces a refresh of the notifications screen each time it is activated
UI: Set focus to default (first) list item each time the notifications screen is activated
UI: Updated two text strings for German and Italian, as "Game mode" and "Play mode" incorrectly used the same word
Fixed player nametags disappearing despite not being affected by Flashbang
Fixed boat shaking for clients in CCity and Shipyard opening cinematics
Fixed Aquarium only ever logging one objective being completed
Fixed having your weapon stuck in iron-sights for the entire refire duration when needing to perform an auto-reload
Fixed issue with caltrop models not always being updated properly
Welp, still not the juneearly july DLC update thingy.
there are payload maps, any of the escort missions (bot, person)
I'm sorry, did you think I didn't know about the escort parts in Brink?
They're there only as part of a mission. A mission with a story. It's much more convoluted than TF2. You need to revive the VIP, which slows the game down. Maps aren't made to focus the battle on the "payload" because of too many side objectives people get hung up on, etc.
Speaking of which, I think Container City might be the best map in the game because of the simple sort of setup I'd like to see more of. It still doesn't have a back AND forth though, only a very slow, grinding forth. And even then the teams need to be about even. It's just not very exciting.
So still no DLC, and still no balancing of the incredibly unbalanced weapons. I heard talk of weapon balancing ages ago, and have yet to see it actually come out. SD just have totally dropped the ball on this one. I regret pre-ordering this one so much. The game is so much fun, but theres maybe 50 people online on PC.
I ended up actually buying two fucking copies of this game at release (don't ask). That's $90 I may as well have flushed. This could have been a brilliant game which a loyal following that played for years, but as an unconventional (read: non-CoD-clone) FPS, Splash Damage needed to do everything right to give the game a chance. Unfortunately instead it seems they've gotten almost everything wrong. Major bugs at release including huge graphics glitches afflicting a large portion of the playerbase, shitty server browser, questionable map design, questionable class balance, atrociously bad weapon balance, broken promises on the DLC, now delays on the DLC, etc.
What a waste...on so many levels.

Aside from the very first part, which encourages spawn camping, Container City is absolutely my favorite map in the game.

Not gonna lie, I'm feeling regret putting dollars into this game. The last game I flat out regretted purchasing? Hellgate London. That is some bad company to be with, SD.
Probably worse is that I convinced a friend to go in on this thing based on the premise that it looked pretty cool and exactly wasn't another COD-styled shooter, and I needed someone to shoot mans with. Boy that egg on my face...

I don't regret my purchase, though it certainly didn't turn out to be the deep, rich multiplayer experience we all hoped for.
I'm a little sad to think this might be the end of Splash Damage, given they seem to be taking almost the same route Kaos Studios did: popular mod -> failed retail product -> failed retail product -> closure. Then again, they've been essentially trying to recapture the same lightning in the same bottle for two games now. It may be time to hang it up if that's all they've got to offer. At this point I can't see any top-tier publisher touching their stuff, unless they go the F2P or the XBL/PSN route. And even then, they're going to have to hit it out of the park to wash off the fail of their two previous efforts.

Try playing it on the 360. It's a goddamn ghost town.

The perfect example of Murphy's Law at work. While I don't quite agree with the class/weapon balance issues you might've had (I always found everything had its proper place and function depending on the situation) this whole post sums up everything I've felt regarding the game for the past few months perfectly. Why can't we have nice things?

We're lucky indeed SD considers PC as a separate platform to push updates to so we aren't stuck waiting for the MS cert process.
Like I said, frustrating to no end.
