A friend pointed me toward this new comic book series just getting off the ground in Portland, Oregon. Launched under Relium Media (I know - who's heard of them?), it follows an orphaned teenage girl as she finds out she's descended from angels. I was a little skeptical at first - the protagonist was billed as being an "angry at the world" girl who "ever teenager can identify with," which sounded like a recipe for instant emo to me, but I just picked up issue 0 and gave it a read-through.
I'm definitely hooked - the story looks like it's going to have a huge scope (as anything with fallen angels and a backstory that spans millennia should) and manages to be intriguing, creepy, and epic within the space of a few pages. Contrary to my expectations, I already like the main character, Mara - she's definitely following in the footsteps of Buffy, and doesn't seem likely to fall into annoying angst like so many other teenage protagonists.
One of the nice little touches that I really enjoyed was the fact that the comic is clearly set in Portland, instead of a generic New York / Gotham analogue.
All in all, it's an excellent prologue issue (it worked for me, at least), and I'd recommend it to both fans of
Buffy, Heroes, X-Men, and other coming-of-age and growing-into-your-powers stories, in addition to (judging from the last page hook for the next issue) anyone who likes stories about cosmic, sweeping conspiracies of supernatural beings meddling with human history.

Okay, you caught me. I got handed the comic by a friend almost a month ago. I got excited about the series, applied for an internship, which I am now starting, and chomping at the bit, I posted.
I’m sorry for going against forum policy. I’ll make sure that I go by the book in the future and I'll definitely be a contributor (I'm already a lurker, I'd just never made an account). I promise.
I showed the thread to the guys at Relium (They laughed at some of the comments. You guys are funny.) and they want to make it up to you. Whoever posted replies can send an email to jake@reliummedia.com, with their username and mailing address and he'll send you a free copy of the issue. Sound ok?
