Ah, good old cancelling the bag of holding. I got so paranoid at one point I would hope to find a seperate sack that I would loudly label CANCELLATION YOU MOTHERFUCK PUT IT IN HERE.

Still did it from time to time.

your biggest threat without reflection is a black dragon(instant death), and various wands/breath weapons that you don't resist.

your death was easily avoidable with a unicorn horn. you should find one on the corpse of any non aligned unicorn you kill. do not kill white(lawful) unicorns.

I had one. I think I might have had two.
They were in the bag of holding.

Did you get the wand of wishing from the fort? You're guaranteed to get one.

Yup, and used some wishes from it, but it and most of the wishes I got from it (except shield of reflection which I was holding) were in the bag too.

Speaking of the castle, it seemed like I had no way to go back upstairs from that floor once I'd fallen down the trapdoor there. Sure, I could get back up to the castle from Valley of the Dead, but every attempt to get back through the hallway ended in trapdoor. Presumably somewhere in Gehennom there's water walking boots or levitation or cursed potion of gain level?

So I've been playing Brogue, testing potions under the assumption that it's generally safest to do so around an open body of water. Confused? Nobody will approach you. On fire? Water near by. Poison? It all airs out.

But I guess if you explode in fire while right in the water it explodes in superheated steam and everything around the water catches on fire. There is no escape, only death.

Glancing over after playing Nethack all night, I notice that it's 9 AM again. I'm reminded of overnight sessions of Civilization 1 or TIE Fighter.

It's amazing how well abandoning the strategy of drinking every fountain, quaffing every potion, reading every scroll extends my characters' average longevity.

Roguelike games are so neat because this kind of stuff is commonplace!

Speaking of scrolls, I pick up bunch, but is the only way to learn what they do by reading them?

You could also use a scroll of identify to identify them -- I know that sounds like a catch 22, but really, the thing with scrolls of identify is they are the easiest object in the game to price identify. What I mean by that is that if you pick up a scroll in a shop and it's price is around 20 zorkdoodles, it's a scroll of identify. Easy peasy.

If you get that hungry, just try using #pray. You'll have to wait a while before using it again, but if you're about to die anyway it's probably a good time. Otherwise, just eat a bunch of things you kill. Early-game exceptions being:

    1) Don't eat any kobolds. You'll get food poisoning and die within a few turns unless you fix it (applying a unicorn horn, #pray-ing, drinking certain types of healing potions, or a few other methods).
    2) Don't eat any old corpses. If you've let it sit around for a while, it'll probably give you food poisoning too. Undead monsters are instantly old when you kill them. If it's not a corpse (food ration, tins, fruits or vegetables), it's usually safe even after 50+ turns, but if the RNG decides it's rotten it might give you other types of bad effects aside from food poisoning.
    3) If your status is Satiated, don't eat unless you really need to and know what you're doing. Choking on your food and dying can end up being a quick instadeath.

you can eat almost anything with a unicorn horn. giant zombies/mummies are a good way to gain strength if they haven't rotted fully. you should never eat a cockatrice/medusa/green slime corpse unless you know what you are doing and want to eat them because you can

Tinning kits make any age of corpse safe. The tins take the same blessing as the kit too. So bless dat tinning kit!

    Hurrah!

    hUB6V.png

So, I ran into the ghost of my last character who died in the Valley of the Dead, and it turns out they still had the amulet of life saving. And it wasn't even cursed. So now I have two of those, a decent set of intrinsics (including teleport control and teleportitis, just hoping I don't lose the former), a couple blessed tins of nurse meat (playing a dwarf this time, so no cannibalism), and an expensive camera I picked up somewhere.

All of which means I'll probably die within the hour, but eh, back to being further along than I've ever explored before.

It's a good thing to wield if you want to do a pacifist ascension, you don't do any damage with it ever.

So I started a game and the first chest had a tower of flame trap that killed me in the first room. Stupid traps.

The wiki says it's the only thing that can make the Riders run from you. So it appears to still work on even lategame enemies.

But sometimes the first chest has a wand of wishing. First chests are goofy that way.

I got to level 19 of Brogue. I was tricked out with a +7 suit of plate mail, +6 Mace of Dar Blade Master slaying (so awesome), all the food and potions I'd ever need, and a couple handy rings. I get into a room full of Dars guarding a captured TENTACLE HORROR and I have two wands of plenty so I could make an army of them. But there's this Dar Battlemage and they got so many spells that I just can't do anything. Such an awful way to die. : (

I just found out about ToME 4 which so far is pretty damn nifty. Nice looking Tileset, configurable difficulty, a talent based system that gives all classes interesting abilities.
Oh, for those who feel ambitious, the engine itself is available to make your own roguelike (with blackjack, and hookers).

The ASCII has a charm to it really. Not that graphics are a bad thing.

Thanks for the tips. I made the mistake of using z instead of Z on my wizard. You can't really "open" a zombie kobold

I played it some more, and really quite impressed. It has a simple quest structure, a limited lives option (Every few levels you get extra life), and it finds that spot where most foes aren't much of a challenge, until you open the wrong door, do something stupid, or learn something new (for instance, Trolls move faster than halflings, so a halfling archer can't easily kite a troll bossmonster!).
It also has online integration, which means it gathers stats, and there's also a chat channel ingame (So you can ask for advice, gloat over a drop etcet.). And it seems to be extremely actively developed at the moment, at a new version once per week.

Finally ended another game three days after starting it. But it's progress!

    PNpd9.png

Got all the way to the bottom floor, grabbed the Amulet of Yendor, but couldn't get rid of the wizard. Once he resurrected with both of my wands of death on empty, didn't really have any good way to take him out. Died in a small little room on level 29 where he could teleport out to the up stairs to heal and I couldn't figure out where the exit was. Not to mention all those mind flayer attacks making me forget where the stairs on each level were.

Lesson learned: DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT use up magic markers too early. I used mine way back in Minetown on identification scrolls thinking more magic markers would show up later. They never did. Oddly enough, neither did a wand of cancellation. Didn't see one the entire game, despite looking out for it to protect my bag of holding from explosion.

    The boring stats:

The grease eventually wears off after enough attacks, though (or, in my case, enough accidentally falling into pools). And the only source of grease I had was wishing for pieces of gear to arrive pregreased. Didn't come across a can of it and didn't want to use a wish just for a can of it.

if you can't cast identify effectively genocide mind flayers. if you're a dwarf do not genocide h however, that is very bad.

Excalibur is a good weapon, but the brands mjlllnor and grayswandir do a bit more damage if you find yourself lacking. hitting the wizard until he dies while standing on the up staircase works most of the time.

you're lucky to find a magic marker. most of my wishes end up being magic markers

Yeah, this was a dwarf game so I would have had to use two uncursed scrolls instead of one blessed if I was going for the genocide there. Might try human next time, but that loses on out being able to eat canned nurses without hits to luck.

I tried to get to the up staircase before he did, but instead what would happen would be I get close to the up staircase, then he get there first and goes upstairs before I can block him.

Oh, and of course, the first few items in the very next game I start include a wand and a scroll. Read the scroll, it's Identify. Identified the wand, it's cancellation. The one wand that never showed up over 69,026 moves last game.

Oh, for those who feel ambitious, the engine itself is available to make your own roguelike (with blackjack, and hookers).

Yeah, I genocided ; first because I didn't want to have to deal with drowning attacks, then g when I was in the swamp because some gremlins fell in the water and began multiplying very rapidly. c, h, P and L came later, just to minimize the annoyances if the Wizard popped up and summoned nasties after a zapped wand of death missed, which it did at least 3-4 times. Luckily I had three of them. Wished for one in the castle, got another one from Orcus, and a random Olog-Hai deep in Gehennom kept zapping one at me and then zapping a dig wand down to escape to the next floor.

Never got bogged down fighting the Wizard on the way back up, and to make sure the sailing was smooth, before I killed him for Book of the Dead the first time, I took a pickaxe to all 46 floors and made sure there was a clear and direct path carved out between each pair of staircases. Genociding mind flayers also helped in that I didn't take any amnesia attacks and have to relearn any of the maps.

But now I get to do it all over again, and this time with a less beginner-friendly class. So far, wizard is looking interesting.

wizard is so much fun once you get magebane

I'm on my third or fourth wizard game and this one is fun already. Started with wand of polymorph, so now my pet is a yellow dragon. On level 3, while running from a sewer rat, I picked up a wand and zapped it at it. Wand of wishing. Shortly afterward, decked out with amulet of life saving, silver dragon scale mail, helm of brilliance, gauntlets of dexterity, and a blessed bag of holding, I go into a general shop and start browsing their wares.
You see here a murky potion. You hear some noises in the distance.
You see here a scroll labeled ANDOVA BEGARIN.
You see here a fortune cookie.
    You see here a flail.
You see here an unlabeled scroll.
You see here a whistle. The yellow dragon bites Akalapi.
    Akalapi is killed!
