Um. My TV is dying kind of

So, I have this TV. And just today it started acting up and being stupid.

Basically, when I turn it on to cable it works fine for about five seconds then it makes this awful sound like a airplane crashing and just goes to grey fuzz. Fine, it's broken. Except that when I put it on video to play Ps2 or Wii, it works perfectly (mostly, it displays "video" in the top right at odd times for random duration, but I can live with that). Additionally, if I start it on video, then switch to cable it just goes straight to static. So, my conclusion is that somehow warming up the TV, however briefly somehow fries the cable connection. It also takes longer the longer the TV has been off. Any ideas how to fix this? I've checked all the external connections, and they seem to be fine.

Do you use a cable box or anything? Is it just straight into the TV?

My guess is your tuner is going out. Run your cable through a VCR and use it's tuner and your TV's composite inputs if you don't want to buy a new TV.

Yeah, sounds like a tuner crapping out to me. If you're lucky, theres a TV repair place around that will give you a free estimate on getting it fixed. Otherwise, do what the dude above me says.

This happened to me. The only setting that works on my TV is the S-video input. I'm too lazy to get it fixed, so I just went and picked up the various s-vid cables for things. If I want to watch tv, I have to run it through my computer, into the s-vid. It's kind of a bitch to do, but at least this way I can pause a show if I need to.

I'd honestly just buy a new TV. They're not really worth being fixed anymore unless it's a high-dollar huge TV (1000$+)

You can get a nice 20" TV from places like Best Buy and Walmart for about 200$ or so. They're going to charge you about 80-100$ to fix the TV, and it's eventually going to re-break anyway.

If I get a new one I'll probably just fork out for an HDTV. I think I can get a decent 22" for about 350-400.

On a related note, do I need to get some extra service to make HDTV work? Or will the dorm cable work?

I think most cable companies force you to subscribe to their "digital cable" service to get HD cable.

You could also get local over-the-air HD using a UHF-capable attenae (or just get a 10$ one from Wal Mart). Make sure your HD TV has an HD tuner and is not just "HD-ready"
