So I really want to use a wireless 360 controller with Oblivion, but I've had several problems doing so.
The biggest issue is with the left analog stick; the game hangs on the left input of the stick, which means my character will keep moving to the left even when I'm not holding down the analog stick. This same problem happens with Alpha Protocol, so I guess it's an issue with Bethesda's engine.
Bethesda had nothing to do with Alpha Protocol. Sounds like a calibration issue, or perhaps some other peripheral is plugged in that is messing stuff up.

Is there any way to adjust the stick's deadzone using xpadder, or otherwise? I've never used it so I don't know.

Ok after years I decided to finally finish Oblivion once and for all just like I did with Fo3 in preparation of Skyrim. I need a nice definitive list of Mods like OOO, and some kick ass texture mods like Qarl. Help me start this game over.. again the best way possible.
See if it's got gunk on it. Hanging to the left is a very common issue with Xbox controllers.
If you're talking to me, nope. I've recently taken apart my controller (I broke a button awhile back and was fixing it) and thoroughly cleaned it.
The drifting happens in the gamebryo games, not 100% of the time but it's reliable enough to notice; particularly since, as I said, I get zero drifting from the left stick in any single other game.
Keep in mind it's only happened with this game and Alpha Protocol (both use Gamebryo, I believe), so it might be an engine issue. I haven't tried turning the controller on/off, but for now I've stuck to using my wireless Logitech controller with Xpadder, and it almost works perfectly with one exception:
For some reason, the game doesn't let me cycle through dialog options as well as the items in my inventory through the arrow keys. I latter learned that to do the latter you use the mouse wheel, but that still doesn't let you cycle through the dialog options.

Alpha Protocol is Unreal 3.
As I recall, the gamepad support in Oblivion is complete shit, and I don't know that there's a way to get everything working nicely at the same time. The arrow keys are actually hotkeyed for confirmation dialogues. Up arrow is yes. Down arrow is no. Yes, it's dumb. I don't know of a way to cycle dialogue options with anything other than the mouse. If there is one, I assume it has to be set within oblivion.ini, and you'd have to find the correct variable names out on the internet somewhere. You can always go the route of doing everything through emulation outside the game, though you'd have right stick emulated mouse control for all the menus. If you do that, you'll want to go into oblivion.ini and set usejoystick to 0.

Well first off you'll probably want to decide if you want to use just one major overhaul mod (either Francesco's or OOO), or go all-out and use FCOM to merge Fran's, OOO, Mart's Monster Mod, and Oblivion WarCry - the latter two being monsters and items respectively. OOO and Fran's are very similar - they both add new items and monsters across all levels of content - but the way they go about it is different. OOO has almost nothing that's leveled to the player, so you can and will run into stuff that'll splatter your ass at lower levels, but Fran's has stuff that's scaled to the player, but it's all different as you go along. This FCOM guide is what I followed when Dashui stepped me through everything install-wise, and it worked out extremely well, aside from ignoring the part in the Fran's installation section about Living Economy, since Enhanced Economy is better and actually updated.
As for other mods I use that I like...
The unofficial patches (Oblivion, SI, Official Mods, Supplemental) and Unique Landscapes are pretty much mandatory, as is - in my mind - the good old Quest Award Leveler. Of course Enhanced Economy, as mentioned. I also like Oblivon XP for leveling purposes, but really any leveling mod will do. I also play a mage, so I also grabbed a magic mod, the big three of which are Midas Magic, Supreme Magicka, and the Less Annoying Magic Experience. LAME is a bit less comprehensive than the other two, but is designed in such a way that you can combine it with essentially any magic-expanding mod; you can conceivably make all three work together, but it's a pain in the ass to do and the results aren't the prettiest.
If you're looking into a texture pack like Qarl's you should have a really beefy machine, so you may want to take a look at Better Cities as well. It adds a ton of stuff to pretty much every town in the game, and makes each place feel a lot more unique. For instance each section of the Imperial City has a second story to make it feel a lot bigger (along with some... interesting shops) and there's a new large tunnel leading from the Waterfront to the Temple district, complete with its own secrets and a few quests. Bravil is probably my favorite of the overhauled cities, though. Instead of just a few houses overlooking a placid river, you have a towering maze of ramshackle houses perfect for roof-hopping as a thief; the usually clean, pristine river at the bottom is instead dingy and greenish-brown, with debris and rocks jutting out of it, helping reinforce the theme of Bravil being a poor, seedy, run-down squat.
That's pretty much all I can really think of now.

Replaying Oblivion, I forgot how much the higher tier enemies became damage sponges. I should not have had to reload a lot for my level tenish character to defeat a freaking mountain lion. And fuck those willowisps. Just fuck them.

I notch down the difficulty slider 5% every level past 10, to ensure that enemies still go down in a reasonable amount of time. It's not a perfect solution since it also reduces my incoming damage, but it's good for keeping my interest up.
And apparently in the 30 minutes between when I quoted Span's post and made this one, they changed it so when you click Quote in a post it goes to a new dedicated reply page. Odd.

I started compiling a list myself, let me know what you guys think of this list of mods. If any of them would be better replaced with another, or if a particular mod isn't any good let me know.
There are a couple of things I still need though, a good water mod since there are so many I don't know which one to go with, same with character and facial textures, I need a mod for that, but there are a lot to choose from. And if there are any other major graphics mods I'm missing let me know. Hell any mods that I might be missing for that manner.
You'll probably still want OBMM since there are far more OMODs and OMOD-ready archives than there are Wrye Bash-ready BAIN installs; plus manual load order tweaking (for the few mods that BOSS doesn't have data for) is a bit simpler with OBMM. The unofficial patches, for example, are much easier to install and remove if needed using the OMOD conversion data all of them possess and DarN's UI is infinitely easier to configure via OBMM if you install it as an OMOD.
For facial textures, you'll probably want to go with Natural Faces alongside Better Looking Wood Elves, Redguards, and Dark Elves (though I have a hell of a time making a decent looking Dunmer, even with Better Looking Dark Elves). The Face Color Unlocker is also helpful since it keeps body skin colors matching face colors. If none of those facial bits suit your fancy, you'll probably have to go find one of the Japanese facial dealies, but since I don't like animu people in my Western RPGs, I dunno which ones are good.
Edit: Also, bear in mind that you'll need more than FCOM Convergence itself to run FCOM. You still need the full versions of OOO, Francesco's, Oblivion WarCry, and Mart's Monster Mod to use it.

Oh hey, I didn't even see that post up there. I've made some posts recently with a bunch of stuff that I guess I'll start fleshing out now that I don't have to retype all of it out.
Can anyone point me to the right files to download if I want to start modding?
Okay. Before you even start, you need tools:
OBMM - Mod manager, archive invalidation, and support for OMOD installs. OMODs will make your life so much easier you have no idea. Use them wherever you can. Most large mods come "OMOD ready," which means you'll have to use OBMM to create an OMOD from the archive file you download.
BOSS - Sorts your load order, gives you compatibility suggestions, tells you what bash tags to use, and generally saves you from nightmares on top of nightmares.
Wrye Bash - Is kind of complicated, but a necessity for a lot of mod compatibility.
It took an indie game store three days to solve some super obscure driver issue, and I made save files inside and outside the first sewars, and it's time to mod:
So before you get to the things that you actually want, you have to get through the stuff you need:
OBSE - Is a scripting backbone that a lot of mods need.
Once you are this far, stop installing mods and make sure the game still works. If you're going to do the FCOM thing, you may even want to back up your data folder before the shit hits the fan with that install.
The Mage Tower mod was outstanding, and the Mehrune's Razor one had a fun dungeon.
Alright, so my friend is pumped for Skyrim, but has never played Oblivion. I want to change this for her. I've got plenty of mods ready to install, but I can't find any that change level scaling. While it wasn't a gamebreaker when I played Oblivion (by the time I hit 25 or so, I was literally invincible, killable only by arrows), I think she will hate it. Any suggestion for mods that make level scaling suck less?
Nothing ruins a day like seeing bandits in Daedric armor.
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is the most popular. It adds asstons of content (enemies, items, quests, etc.) and makes enemy levels static. It's very much a kitchen sink mod, and it has the side effect of making the difficulty a bit more unpredictable in that you can wander into a seemingly peaceful without having a good idea of whether it's an area for frolicking along without incident or an area for immediately being ganked by level fuckoff ogres.
Francesco's Leveled Creatures and Items is another. Rather than make everything static, it makes the level scaling work in a way that isn't pants on head idiotic. Also adds some new enemies and stuff, but nowhere near as much as OOO. It generally strays closest to the experience of the vanilla game.
Tamriel Immersion Experience is by far my favorite, but nobody else seems to like it. It makes enemies static, rebalances items, and a bunch of other stuff, but it does it without any external content. It exists only as a single ESP. It's also hard as balls, which turns most people off.
FCOM Convergence is an overhaul compilation mod. It lets you run OOO, Francesco's, Mart's Monster Mod, and Warcry at the same time. And it's a goddamn nightmare to install. There is a torrent for a full install out there somewhere, though.
And you also want a mod to fix the leveling system, your options being:
Realistic Leveling - This has always been my preference. Realistic Leveling makes leveling just work. Basically, your attributes are tied directly to your skills, and increase as your skills increase. It's optional whether or not you have to sleep to level. If you have it set to full silent, everything just scales fluidly. OblivionXP - OblivionXP swaps out the traditional TES advancement system and gives you XP like any other RPG, which you can then invest into your stats. KCAS (OMOD data) - KCAS is more or less the same as Realistic Leveling, but doesn't have the same level of compatibility. Some people seem to prefer it, though. SPAM - SPAM is super complex. It builds on the traditional TES advancement system, but it ties your attribute multipliers at level up to your class build to remove the x5 metagame and generally make your build choices more important to your character after creation.
You want to head on over to this site, which has a rundown of all the texture and LOD mods around. Depending on what visual mods you go with and how much VRAM you have on your video card, vanilla QTP3 may be a bad idea. It also has a conflict with the unofficial Oblivion patch that necessitates yet another patch to fix. I tend to recommend QTP3 Redimized to everyone, regardless, which still looks great, doesn't have compatibility issues, and is lighter on your system. Also, Really Almost Everything Visible When Distant is exquisite.
Is here. As companions to it, I'd also recommend Animated Window Lighting System and Immersive Interiors. AWLS makes windows glow with light at night and adds chimney smoke to houses. It just generally makes the world feel more alive. Immersive Interiors piggybacks on a part of All Natural that makes interior lighting match exterior weather. It makes it so that you can see outside through windows from indoor areas, which is wonderful. It all has to be hand placed, though, and the guy hasn't finished it yet. There's still a couple cities where you'll have solitary confinement nonwindows.
There's a lot of them. The only sound pack I ever used was Symphony of Violence, which replaces combat sounds with drastically better ones. You can always browse through the sound section of the Nexus to see whatever suits your fancy.
Also, I want to be a mage this time. I chose race Imperial, sign Mage and class Mage. Will that be alright?
As long as you're using a mod to fix the world scaling and a mod to fix the leveling system, it's kind of impossible to fuck your character up. Just roll with whatever you feel like.
However, I'd highly suggest using a mod like Supreme Magicka or LAME to make magic less shitty. Supreme Magicka even has a compatibility file to bring it directly into balance with Deadly Reflex. In addition to that, I'd recommend the Race Balancing Project (OMOD data), which rebalances racial bonuses and birthsigns to make them less stupid, though it may or may not have issues with a save file from after character creation.
As for water mods, if you're using OBGE, then Liquid Water seems to be where it's at. It supposedly fixes the issues that OBGE's SSAO shader had with fog, too, so that's a plus. I think Advanced Water was the best of the non-OBGE water mods.
Face texture mods are covered in the visual guide site linked above, but TNR (it's included in TIE, but available separately on the download page) is something I highly recommend to actually change the faces themselves.
Unique Landscapes is definitely great, though the quality can be kind of all over the place at times. Still better than how generic the vanilla landscapes are.
Enhanced Grabbing is great. It overhauls how NPCs react to picking things up with the grab (default z) key in some really interesting ways.
Mouse Cast is excellent. It allows you to use a modifier key to cast spells with your right, left, and middle mouse buttons. You can also set sets of hotkeys to modifier key + number keys, and scroll to subsets within those sets with the mouse wheel. It just allows you easy access to shitloads of spells.
That's most of the major stuff that I can think of. I may post up some more as it comes to mind.

Modding Oblivion to the point where it might be worth replaying is very painful process. Expect it to take at least 4 hours, and if you make even one mistake along the way you'll probably have to do it all over again.

This is why, and I say this as much as I can, you do not do a full install without testing the game. You install the game and the unofficial patches and you test to see that everything works. Then you install your overhaul mod(s) and you test to see that everything works. And you do that repeatedly until you have everything working. Test all the goddamn time. That way when something goes wrong (and something will go wrong), you know what mod is likely to have caused it and you know what you need to roll back. Keeping a gamedata backup is also a pretty good idea.
Also, make sure you archive invalidate with OBMM as necessary. That will save you some headache.
The_Spaniard, if you need helping installing everything just message me on Steam.
And really, Oblivion modding is a cold, heartless lover. You can't simply install everything straight through and expect them to work. There are all kinds of little quirks and things to be aware of with a number of mods, including what order to install them in to ensure maximum compatibility.
In other modding news, I've been playing around with a few extra graphical and audio mods and I'm liking the results. A small one adds a glare to the sun, which I think coupled with OBGE's god rays looks pretty great:
Another new addition is a sound mod, Sounds of Cyrodiil and the interesting thing about this one is that it recommends and is compatible with a number of other big, popular mods.
That and the others add a massive amount of new ambient and weather sounds to the game, as well as letting you hear new sounds inside buildings from outside them and vice versa, making Oblivion feel that much more alive and immersive. Storms & Sounds and Stereo Overhaul share a few of the same file names - Data\Sound\fx\ambient\amb_windlight_lp, amb_windheavy_lp, amb_windmendium_lp, amb_rain_lp, and amb_rainstorm_lp - so you can just choose which version you like best of those. They also share files in the ambient\thunder and thunderdistant folders, but they're actually the same files just named in a different order. The only thing to be aware of is that while Sounds of Cyrodiil recommends Symphony of Violence, SoV can cause your game to become unstable when it uses the new combat sounds.
I'm not sure I like the rustling of leaves mostly added by Stereo Overhaul, too, but that's an easy fix by simply removing most of those files under ambient\regions\wind.
Naturally you want to run BOSS and then use Oblivion Mod Manager's Archive Invalidation to ensure all the new sounds will play correctly.

So I picked up my Oblivion game I started when Skyrim was announced. My adventures with Jauffre and Martin continue. My character is an alchemy driven mage with the sign of the Atronach. Like, I forget that normally magicka DOES regen. Having to constantly find sources of it, whether its absorbing spells, making potions, making weapons with absorb on hit etc is a completely different game. Every fight is a strategic battle to maintain magicka and charges in my weapons.
Im not sure I can go back to another character type in Skyrim. Its such a pain in the ass sometimes, but its a ton of fun. Then again, Ive never done it for my first playthrough, its always my second major run. So maybe that is how I should rock Skyrim.
You folks make me feel strange for having played Morrowind and Oblivion through (however many hundreds of hours) totally unmodded. Its not something i ever consider... I guess that just shows my console roots probably.
At any rate, very excited for Skyrim (vanilla!). Sad i couldnt view the demo Quakecon footage before it was removed
Is Skyrim keeping with the magic weapons that need to be recharged? I'd kind of like magic weapons that stayed magic without having to recharge them.
I also have only ever played Oblivion unmodded, Witchsight :^: . Granted, I mean, I played Oblivion mainly on Xbox, but I did play a bit on PC unmodded too
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I know, right? My buddy almost punched me in the face when I got super happy that Mass Effect got delayed. But then I explained to him that Skyrim and Battlefield 3 are both due out end of the year and that we would have no time for Mass Effect.
I also have a baby coming in a few months...luckily Im hoping I can use existance of said baby as an excuse as to why im so tired at work, and not blame it on Skyrim and BF3.
Ive already purchased a little sack thingy that allows me to hold my baby with both hands free. Im going to be the best dad.
Now you just need one of those "beer" hats to hold the baby's bottles and an extra long straw.
No joke...this was already discussed. Beer hat with one side beer one side formula. My wife came up with the idea because itd be hilarious. She is also completely serious that I do it. My wife is the best wife.

Your wife is pretty smart too. The beer would help the baby sleep, and the formula would supply you with nutrients so you don't have to get off the couch. :^:

Well...i say formula...but its gunna be booby milk. I keep telling her she needs to do shots before pumping so I can kill two birds with one stone.
Back to Skyrim. Did anyone else find the "dragon" combat a bit meh. Like, they hype up dragons like they are going to be amazing fights, but they seemed a little boring to me. Shoot dragon while its in the air, when it crashes, exchange blows with dragon.
I mean, it doesnt seem worse then most combat in ES, but it definately didnt seem like these super memorable epic encounters. I do hope to have to run away from dragons early on, or perhaps defend a town from one. So maybe thats what they mean when they talk about how cool dragons are, but the actual combat wasnt anything special.

I'm imagining someone increasing the actual size of the dragons, making them much, much bigger. That would probably fuck with geometry, though.

There's also a supplement to the unofficial patch that I forgot about and someone else linked.
Anyway, what you want is a mod to fix the world scaling, your options being:
Other things of interest include:
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Also, make sure you archive invalidate with OBMM as necessary. That will save you some headache.

Here's another screenshot I took last night showing off Really AEVWD, Animated Window Lighting System and OBGE Liquid Water, just because:

Im not sure I can go back to another character type in Skyrim. Its such a pain in the ass sometimes, but its a ton of fun. Then again, Ive never done it for my first playthrough, its always my second major run. So maybe that is how I should rock Skyrim.
At any rate, very excited for Skyrim (vanilla!). Sad i couldnt view the demo Quakecon footage before it was removed
I also have only ever played Oblivion unmodded, Witchsight :^: . Granted, I mean, I played Oblivion mainly on Xbox, but I did play a bit on PC unmodded too

Check out my GTAV-PC custom race tracks inspired by real life racing circuits!
I assume it's super incompatible with everything
Because, there's alot of them comin' down the pipe...
"Shut up, you sack of meat! I can't hear what Commander Shepard is saying!"
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Mods.
I'm imagining someone increasing the actual size of the dragons, making them much, much bigger. That would probably fuck with geometry, though.
I will create a mod that will let me have sex with the dragons! And I'll put boobs on the dragons! And then you can marry them!
Been done.
