You know what happened on the 6th of august 20 years ago?

Well, lots of things.. the trees grew taller, people were born, people died etc.

However, in more relevant news this dude:

230px-TimBernersLee-2009.jpg

using one of these:

NeXTcube.jpg

Basically created the hive of porn and villainy we know as the world wide web by...well, by creating it. Obviously a lot of work went into it beforehand (developing the first web server and browser for example), but 6th August 1991 marks the launch of the worlds first web page which is preserved for historical interest here:

http://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

You can read more about this seminal moment in human development on wikipedia here and here but for now lets reminisce about web pages of old, imagine what the world would be like without the wibbly wobbly web and generally loft a glass aloft to the man who made it all possible.

(also, this is my first thread, please be gentle)

    Web sites sucked so much even as recently as 2004.

    Somewhere between 06 and 09, the web got its shit together and started looking like something prettier than a disused litter box.

    Back in the day I was a pro, I used Dogpile because it searched using other search engines.

    Remember, when searching it is important to use the vaguest, least-specific terms possible. The goal is to get the most results.

    Who here can honestly admit to being online pre-91?

    I want to be in a special cool guy club. So we can be snobby and elitist about our old age and many many years of doing nothing benefiting society.

    I remember my dad had "Power Tools" for AOL.

    Which allowed him to IM people on AOL and boot them offline.

    He also impersonated a female and tried to lure some guy in another state to a bar or something.

    So all-in-all my Dad was a scumbag on the internet in the 90's and a horrible influence on me?
