I'm buying it at release because I want to support new, creative IPs, and I'm not really doing that when Uncle Gabe brings the price down to 7.95.

Same here.
I was actually debating whether to get the physical pre-order goodies, but I think I'll just get it on steam since I've heard good things about Arx Fatalis and I'm a hat addict connoiseur.
Plus it helps I'm of the one percent with zero interest in Xcom.
I was going to hold off on getting this because of Borderlands 2 taking up every free moment that I'm not at work and I still haven't come close to getting halfway through Mass Effect 3, but my wife reserved it for me for my birthday and her folks gave me a gift card covering the rest of the cost. I promised her she could have the TV to play it She didn't get the tarot deck though. Was that supposed to be at the time of pre-order or when the game comes out?
Ze game is right on ze horizon. I am pretty jazzed about it, but, man, what a dark-assed world.
The game setting really gives me a strong "Thief the Dark Project" vibe which is a very good thing in my books. I used to love the atmosphere in Thief, and if this game manages to replicate that feeling I'll be a very happy camper indeed.
This might be a silly question, but is this done on the same engine as Oblivion/Skyrim?
I ask because this game sounds awesome, but I'm hesitant to buy anything from Bethesda because BUGS.
It isn't made by Bethesda, they're just the publishers. Arkane Studios (Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of M&M, and Bioshock 2*) developed it.
* - Design, animation, and art. Developed by 2K wherever.
Hmm, I did notice some aesthetic similarities to Bioshock.
Still, are they using their own engine? I'm aware that they're only publishing, but publishers sometimes push engines on developers...
I think I read somewhere that they're using a version of the Source engine. Or I could just me making that up from the fact that it looks kind of like it, and they used it for Dark Messiah. Also the look of the game was designed by a former Valve employee, who was basically responsible for the look of City 17.
It's the Unreal engine. But the "Oblivion/Skyrim" engine is the engine behind lots of games, like Civ IV, Warhammer Online, Sid Meier's Pirates!, and Defense Grid, so it doesn't have to suck.
I was actually very skeptical about this game at first until I saw the 2 playthroughs the devs did of the golden cat level. The devs had talked a lot about the potential various ways to complete the levels and use powers but I wasn't sold until I saw footage.

True. I was just worried about Bethesda going "Hey, we have a game engine we use. You should use it too. And here's all the code we've written to make it even better!"
Bethesda didn't do that to any of the other games it published, so I think your worries are unfounded. The chances of a company using Gamebryo for its engine go up when it's 1) not published by Bethesda and 2) not developed by Bethesda.
Yeah, the Arkane guys are pretty devoted to remaining independent from that sort of influence. IIRC, they opted to scrap a game or two instead of letting publishers push them around.
So when I get the game next week, I'm debating whether or not I should do stealthy, sneaky-killing first, or just go crazy and kill everything. Ones more direct and harder, and the other is more quiet, safe, yet time consuming.

i'm going for a sneaky play through first. I find it so satisfying when you get it right
I tend to start stealthy, then something frustrating happens so I go kill heavy and then I just end up playing the game balanced the rest of the way on most of my playthroughs of games that give stealth/passive options.
Well, the other "pull an AT-AT" is "walk under it, shoot a grappling hook up, then stab it in the underbelly" which would also be neat if somewhat less impractical.
I am incredibly pumped that 'lackluster combat' is not on that list. I feel like that would be an easy stumble for this game to make, and given how many other amazing things they seem to be nailing the shit out of it seems there has to be some kind of obvious flaw?

I'm hoping there's a way to pull an AT-AT on those things as well.
Edit: By that I mean a tripwire of some sort.

Though i think i would prefer it without the slow-mo
