That "doo doo doodle DOO DOO" refrain at the start is very Elder Scrolls / Pirates of the Caribbeanesque, and then it goes into a tune oddly reminiscent of The Man They Call Jayne from Firefly. It's like someone riffing on the theme of "high adventure".
Yes! This is exactly what I've been almost hearing and not quite placing!
I've been having a lot of luck with my AstroVampRogue.
He's a vampire with bloodmagic, astrology, assassin, burglary, archaeology, swords (because rogues should use swords), and I can't remember his 7th skill off the top of my head, I think it's dead shot.
Anyway, after level 1 he became really powerful. Having all those crits make him heal like no one's business, and when I hit monster zoo's I pop some potions and spam spells because it doesn't matter when I'm life stealing and mana stealing all day.
In 1.0.4, whenever it comes out, there will be map markers.

How do I know when I've cleared a level? I've uncovered/cleared everything on level 1, but I'll still find a random monster spawning around. I still have one quest where I need to bring a McGuffin to a throne, but I can't find it for the life of me.
Should I be finding bombs to try to break walls and stuff?

Monsters will always randomly spawn.
The McGuffin spawns in a random location AFTER you pick up the quest. So, it's likely in a room you already explored before accepting it.

Thanks. Finally found it.
And then nothing like a CTD to ruin your fun on level 3.
Jesus mightypuck you have played a lot of this game.
At least a good half of it was spent cursing at the screen in the language of Cthulians, wishing great pain and death upon the developers of the game... right before rolling another character even though it's two hours passed bedtime.
Something... Interesting to note, If you steal an item from the shop by doing the "Place it on the ground and work your way out and pick it up off the ground trick" to get out of the shop and then use an Anvil to change the item into an artifact, then go back to the shop with the item equipped or in your inventory, Braxx (?) still recognizes his changed item and proceeds to pulverize you...I tried, thought it was some sort of genius exploit I had figured out...not so much.
As a side note, has anyone figured out a cool way to name your characters so you can keep track of how you did with certain builds? I have been naming all my guys Edgler Vess and have about 20 total games (deaths!) in, and have had a few good runs, but now I am having a hard time remembering what builds I was at least mildly successful with.
My current character has a maxed out Tinkering skill, with one level of dodge and one level of Archaeology. Combat is... tough. I'm on Lvl 2 and have spent most of it running away from Deths and Zombys shoving cheese into my face. Once I find some chalk, however, I'll be able to upgrade my starting crossbow into a force to be reckoned with.
Quick question that has probably already been asked:
If I picked up a sidequest to kill a regiment off dredmore's army, is it possible to have already killed it and thus be unable to complete the side quest? I'm asking because I've basically explored the entire first floor (missing one room because its blocked by an acid bolt trap I can't disarm yet) and the two of the last room I walked into had Inconsequentia Statues. One quest was to kill a regiment, the other was to kill another regiment and get (and destroy) the loot they drop.
I know, earlier in my exploration, I killed a regiment or so... would that be them and am I now screwed out of the quest reward?
EDIT:
Oh, one more question. Say I've crafted a Steel Sword and use it on an Anvil. Can I still turn it into, say, a Fine Steel Sword and iff so will it keep its enchantments? Because if not I'll use these 1st floor anvils on my ring or on stuf to send to the Warehouse, until I have swords/armor I happier with keeping.
I'm almost entirely certain that the bosses/artifacts/regiments/whatever that act as the targets of quests aren't spawned until the quest is actually taken. And they can spawn in pre-explored areas...I actually had one instantly spawn right in Inconsequentia's altar room with me once.
EDIT: Damn, this is why I should always refresh the page before I post. I miss the way the preview button worked on the old forum.
They can spawn before hand. I killed a regiment or w/e early on, had a quest to defeat them later for an artifact and the artifact was just waiting there when I went back. So mobs will spawn, but artifacts won't, in my experience.
Yeah I've had that to. The main thing to remember is the position of the special object because many quests involve it. The mellow shrine, the eyeball shrine etc. Map markers can't come soon enough.

Yeah, map markers are definately the biggest need the patch will be addressing.
Having a run that looks doomed turn around by finding a room filled with the iron you desperately need is a great feeling. Finally have my steel sword and when I get done with work, I should be able to craft some basic bronze armor and be able to hit Floor 2 with relative ease. The thing I want most right now is to find/buy a better crossbow than my small one.
There's a named small crossbow on the first floor but I can't reach it without a Wand of Handiness.
EDIT: For those chuckling at the fact I've never yet seen the 4th floor, I play exclusively on Going Rogue with Permadeath, because I Am A Man!
Handy Wands only work if you target a monster directly for some reason, even though retrieving those items is realistically the first thing everyone wants to do with them. Hopefully that gets changed at some point.

In other news, Washington the Adventurer, kickpuncher extraordinaire, is clvl 7 with 54hp and 35 defense. Mossy shields are goddamn awesome.
But you can use the shield abilities if you took that talent so kinda, I guess.

Dlvl5. Clvl12. Unarmed/berserk/vampirism/shields/assassination/archaeology/smithing. Was doing really well.
I walk into a shop, maybe two spaces, hover over the items and go to leave. Apparently that counts as shoplifting.
I don't even know.
For a while I was afraid to turn it off so quite a few hours were spent idling.

Crafting skills just got so much better.
I haven't played in a few days but I'm so glad to hear this confirmed.
