Partly shameless, but I've been an avid player of both League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth now. The original sale price of $30 was a big purchase for me back when it first went Gold, and it was a tough sell to my other friends who could just play League of Legends for free.
Now however, is a great time to try Heroes of Newerth out! The graphics are stellar and the mechanics will be familiar but pleasantly different and more in-depth. For you tournament-scene people, there are special tournament-mode options and MMR and an in-game store to customize your goodies. For only $10 I think it's worth it, especially since its comparable now to most Steam Summer sales. Give it a try! You'll love it - look me up in-game (Nidhogg) if you want some tips or tutelage.
