I think the disc drive longevity issue was dismissed as being more or less irrelevant. The more important matter is that keeping the Wii vertically oriented reduces the chance of the console overheating and cooking the GPU.
So I finally got to put an SD card in my Wii. It has some photos and a couple of videos that my dad took with his digital camera. With that, I showed him the Photo Channel. The photo stuff worked great, but when it came to the videos he had, they only showed about one second and then I was asked if I wanted to play it again. I know I'm not hitting anything as it's playing. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to make those videos work?
Yeah... videos have worked great on my Wii, out of the box anyway.
Also: OP should have info on pulling the power, etc. for terminally un-sunc wiimotes as came up in that thread a day or two ago. Common problem. Also: the whole horizontal / vertical thing does indeed need a total re-do.

You either wait a long time for an error message which may never come or just shut it off, pull plug if necessary. Won't hurt it.
The usual BS, make sure your signal's strong, change wireless channels.
ETc etc etc

Don't be afraid to pull the plug if your Wii stalls during a system update download. The Wii has to download the update before it can install it, so your machine won't be bricked if the download doesn't complete and you pull the plug.
My little brother went into my room when I wasn't home without my permission, used my brand new 46" HDTV without my permission and played with my Wii without my permission. Guess what happened?
You have a Wii and a 46" HDTV but you still live with your parents?

I suspect that would help him, you know, afford a 46" HDTV. Living expenses are a bitch.

No TV is worth living with your parents. But that's just me.
:P So the mysterious Remote disconnect happened for the second time in 3 weeks yesterday. Had to power down and unplug. Is this a real common issue? Is there something that can be done to stop in from happening with any frequency? It's damn annoying having to actually get up off the couch.

I think it's one of those things where you only hear about it as much as you do because of the internet.

Mine has done it a few times, but I think Zero is right.

I also keep it vertical because of a very fucking bad cat who thinks the Wii is her bed.
So I finally found a Nyko Wii Charge Station. They've been MIA in Canada until now (even online). They got them in at Best Buy this week. It's the only one I could find that you don't have to plug into a USB jack to power it, so I can keep it on my end table beside my couch where I keep all my controllers anyway.
I haven't been home, so I really can't post impressions yet, but I am very excited.
Dudes, so my Wii Sports disk stopped working. I can play other games fine, and Wii Sports used to work, but whenever I try to play it, I get a DRE after the wrist strap warning.
There's no major scratches, and no fingerprints. Anything to be done other than calling Ninty?

Now she tries using the TV or DVR.
You'd want to sleep on it too, if you could.

My Wii will remain vertical since it'll have a wide, enclosed shelf on its own. No significant chance of knocking it over or tripping on wires.
I am looking at those cooling fans mentioned in the OP, but I've been reading conflicting reports on their usefulness.
I thought that my Wii was safe vertically, until I was playing Melee with my wired GC controllers and I accidentally tugged on one of the cords. I lost the clear plastic stand stabilizer (since I wasn't using it vertically at first), so there was nothing keeping it from tipping over.
Thankfully, my "holy crap my $250 hard-to-find game console is about to fall over" senses kicked in as I tugged on it, and I lunged forward and caught it before it hit the shelf. I was like Spider-Man for a second.

Call them. They'll replace it for free with no hassle. It's even less hassle since it was a pack-in game and they know for a fact that you're not trying to rip them off. It wouldn't make any sense.

It is currently sitting horizontal.
I've got the base stabilizer in place, and my chair's close enough that I can not pull the gamecube cord taught. It should be OK.
How's the overheating when on Standby issue coming along?
I'm tempted to just leave it on standby so it can download any available updates, but the graphical corruption horror stories pull me back.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.
Indeed, if you have a console prone to that problem you'd best find out the hard way. Nintendo is luxurious in their warranty care, if it helps ease your worried mind.
Hmm, I see. So I take it those issues occured because of improperly installed heatsinks/thermal paste?
I guess it's fine then.

I now have a fancy little stand to keep my Wiimotes out of the way and constantly fully charged. The battery makes things a little heavier, which I like, and the rubber-coated battery covers also feel really good. I am 100 percent happy with my purchase.
One thing, though. I haven't played for more than 3 hours at a time yet, so I don't really know how long the batteries last between charges.

How does the stand work with the wrist straps? It didn't look like they would fit in there well with the straps so I didn't get it. I just got recharge AA's instead.

rechargable AA's ftw. I have 4 sets I just cycle through my 2 wiimotes.

Actually, it won't download system updates on standby, you have to initiate them yourself. the only thing standby is used for is wiiconnect24 stuff, like weather/news/mii/everybody votes stuff.

Video Card rot, you bastard!
It was a pain in the ass packing the system myself, too. I kind of wish they had sent me a box so I didn't have to spend $10 on bubble wrap and a box.
Now I'm home-consoleless.... well, my PS2. But I don't want to be absorbed into an RPG for 80 hours. Hmm...

I get the first-channel-lag issue.
Why didn't they send you a box? I thought they sent boxes.

indeed. mine has never done this either.
Mine has done it a few times, but I think Zero is right.
The guy also said he had never heard of my problem (overheating) before.
I saw 4 or 5 blog posts about it before I reported it.
I think they are just giving the "official" line, and it really doesn't seem that common.
(overheating is purely speculative as the cause, even if that speculation seems very well founded)
