I now have a fancy little stand to keep my Wiimotes out of the way and constantly fully charged. The battery makes things a little heavier, which I like, and the rubber-coated battery covers also feel really good. I am 100 percent happy with my purchase.
One thing, though. I haven't played for more than 3 hours at a time yet, so I don't really know how long the batteries last between charges.
How does the stand work with the wrist straps? It didn't look like they would fit in there well with the straps so I didn't get it. I just got recharge AA's instead.
There's a little notch on the side of each cradle for the strap to fit. Works perfect.
I just got off the phone with Nintendo customer service and just wanted to say that I was very impressed with how courteous and helpful they were.
My wii is suffering from video card rot (I think) - any time the wii menus would come up there would be a lot of black pixels on the screen. This seemed to happen most often when I would be in a virtual console game, then pressed the home button on the remote.
Anyway, the rep said that it was a rare problem (I'm sure they always say that) and they are sending me a label (no box) so I can send my wii in for repair/replacement.
Just for kicks I asked him if they recommended vertical or horizontal and told him that it gets very hot when the standby connection is left on. He said that the temperature is normal, and that Nintendo is aware of how hot it gets but it was fine and that it didn't matter if it was vertical or horizontal. Again, they might just say this to everyone, but I thought it would be interesting to get an "official" response.
Anyway, I was just impressed at how knowledgeable and nice they were as opposed to other companies I have dealt with. *cough* verizon... charter... *cough*
Seems the right thread to ask. Most of my tvs inputs are taken up and I'm currently running my Wii through the standard composite output. The only other spare socket I have (without fiddling things around or constantly swapping when I want to play on the Wii) is an s-video socket.
Are 3rd party cables comparable to official cables? Where am I best to order from?
Does anyone have any idea as to how long a Wii can be safely completely unplugged from power?
I need to know this right away. Thanks.
Just a guess, but I would think as long as you want. I left mine unplugged while we went on vacation for a week, and it had no problems when we got back.
I bought some 3rd party component cables at Futureshop this weekend, along with RE4. As soon as I switched my cables I saw something was off. It's mostly apparent in white backgrounds, like the Wii menu. Lets say I look at the pointer hand. A few pixels to the right will be a pale, grey outline of the pointer hand, as if something in the picture is not lining up properly.
I never noticed such a problem with the standard cables, and I haven't noticed this on my 360 which is also plugged through component cables. I have a CRT 26 inches Toshiba HDTV. Is this most likely a defective cable, or could it be a problem my Wii has with component cables? I'd hate to go downtown and exchange my component cables only to find out that all component cables mess up like that.
But it's probably my best option. Still, was wondering if anyone ever had such problems.

So you were unaware that the Wii has 512MB of internal flash storage on which to store games and that Wii points are tracked on Nintendo's end (remotely)? The battery is for the Real Time Clock (RTC).

It's good to know that if you delete everything off of your Wii, you can still redownload all your VC games for free.
Okay, so I've looked back for threads on PA over the last two months, trying to see if there's anything new to the whole "specks on the screen" thing that's been thought to be about overheating. It seems a lot of people are discovering this problem when playing RE4 on it. Or so I'm told.
I would like to buy RE4 someday, but I am also worried for my Wii. I mean, sure, if it's going to break, I'd want it to break within warranty. However, there's the saying of "If it's not broke, don't fix it."
I can't imagine what would make RE4 be the cause of people seeing their specks, unless there's some really dark areas and I'm guessing there would be with a game like that. But it's not like people haven't had problems seeing them on white screens like the Wii Main Menu, as there are pictures of Elebits, Excite Truck, and Super Mario 64 all with the specks.
Anyway, has there been any new insight as to why this has happened? Or who it affects? Especially the latter, since I got mine about a week before Christmas, so I feel like I'm right on the fence of whether I'm likely to get hit with this or not.
Here's what I've heard, and it's all mostly from this board. Supposedly, there were some defective RE4:WE discs, rather than RE4:WE causing problems on the Wii. Secondly, the big artifacting problem that people have is usually due to cooling issues with the system, and the resulting artifacting occurs in all games (not just RE4), but perhaps people notice it more in RE4 than in say, Wii Sports or Rayman or a VC title.
I don't know if there ARE any defective RE4 discs, or if people that already had a thermal problem were just starting to notice the artifacting when running that game.
I think it's a case of all the RE4 discs being fine and just people noticing the thermal/artifacting problem when they got the game. But I honestly have no idea for certain... I don't have any problems with my Wii.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but I just wanted to see if anything new about it has been learned. I know I'm fine right now as I can just play Trauma Center: Second Opinion and do the one operation where
you have to work in the dark with just a penlight
since that's plenty dark enough for me to check it out.
Speaking of TP:SO, I have had something weird happen. The last few times I've went up against the Deftera, I've had moments where the game stops visually, but then catches up to where it was. It's not like suddenly does a fast-foward thing. It's more like a freeze frame button was pushed and it lasted only a little longer than the blink of an eye. And then there's yesterday or two days ago I'm halfway through Deftera's X mission and my tools stopped working. The game wasn't responding to the A or B button, but had no problem with + and choosing Retry......which needs the A button! It was like the game went "Fuck you, Dr. Stiles! You arms now no longer work." The few minute and fixable problems I've had with the game have always been against Deftera. I don't know what's up with that one.
4. FIX THE STUPID SYSTEM-CRIPPLING E-MAIL GLITCH!
Okay, so I broke from my listing convention, but I'm a tad annoyed by this. As you know, you can link the Wii to a standard e-mail address for exchanging pictures and messages. Some e-mails sent to the Wii can, however, freeze the Wii... very, very badly. The system keeps the downloaded message in memory, and will attempt to display/process it every time the system is turned on - and freeze every time, rendering the Wii useless. (Please Drinky, no commentary here.)
Is the glitch rare? Yes -- I've only come across 9 cases of this so far, but in every case it was caused by the same thing, an e-mail sent from a computer. Something is wrong in the parsing/display engine for external messages, and it would be nice for NOA/NCL to fix that little problem... or at least provide a way to "clear" message memory without eternally erasing all other data on your system AND changing your Wii address code.
This is the first time I've heard of it. Wikipedia has nothing about it. I have two e-mail addresses on my Wii Message Friend List. Is it safe to delete them? I've also managed to send two pictures to the Wii through e-mail? Is there anything I should do with them, or are those okay to leave on it?
Question for anyone with one of the Nyko charge stations. When I leave my Wii remotes in there for a while, the batteries seem to get very hot. Like, "oh my god, my remotes are going to melt" hot.
Does that happen to anyone else or is that a sign of faulty batteries that are likely to explode?

That's ghosting, and it's likely your TV doing it and not the cables.
I bought a used Wii from gamestop today, is there anything in specific I should be cautious about?
Though, I am rather pleased with myself -- originally I said 'sure I'll save 20, what the hell', but it didnt have wiisports so I had to buy that for 10 dollars... and I was a little disappointed, but I get home and plug it in and while the Wii's memory was cleared and I had to enter in new information, apparently records of the Virtual Console remain, because I could download Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Super Mario World, Wave Race 64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Excitebike already with 100 wii points to spare.

Yes, VC stuff is tied to your console's serial number.
And Gamestop isn't bundling a used Wii Sports with used Wii systems? For shame!
While playing through MP3, I've noticed that my A button is starting to feel "mushier" and generally crappy. It hasn't actually failed to respond, but it sucks in that my four month controller has the feel of one from a ten year old used one. Perhaps the Wiimotes aren't as durable as previous systems' controllers?

More than durability, it has to do with how much you sweat into the thing.
Take it apart and clean off the buttons and the contacts and it'll most likely feel like new. The remote is kinda hard to get apart, but I think it would be pretty hard to accidentally break it.
Instead of being completely screwed together, there are, I think, four screws, and two places near the top where it snaps together. You need to take the screws out, and then pry it open at the top before trying to pull it apart.

Then again, I'm guessing used Wiis are a rare sight at this point.

I wouldn't ever sell my Wii, but if I did people wouldn't get shit.
You should format your Wii Shop Channel and Wii console's system memory prior to selling or otherwise transferring your Wii console to any third party. (For information about privacy and the protection of your personal information, click here.)
To clear information from the Wii Shop Channel, including records of your transactions and rights to download software:
1. Access the Wii Shop Channel.
2. Select "Settings" from the list of options.
3. Select "Remove Wii Shop Channel Account."
Once completed, all information will be erased.

Because I'm an ass?
Because I feel that whoever buys it should have to give Nintendo more monies?
Besides, I'm pretty sure that any major chains that sell used consoles are supposed to wipe them anyway. That's certainly the policy with 360s.

Thankfully they don't have the audacity to charge me. Nintendo still has the best customer service, even if they're apparently making shitty consoles now.
I explained my displeasure in having to deal with a new Wii number and all the headaches associated with it, but they didn't seem confident that anything could be done about that.

No, it's not on the ground and it's over a foot away from the nearest heat-producing source. It has nothing pressed against it either (except the times it's in my pants :winky:)

Some Wiis like it hot.
The wifi hardware in some Wiis has a tendency to get super hot. I'd suggest turning WiiConnect24 off, but I would suspect your 3rd new Wii wouldn't have this problem. Might want to play it safe, though.
I've had my Wii since February, for instance. While it gets pretty warm, it hasn't caused video card rot. YMMV, I guess.

That's very strange.
Are your batteries low?

Perhaps a slightly scratched or dirty disk? That might cause excessive seek times on certain sections, which might be what you're getting there.

Does that happen to anyone else or is that a sign of faulty batteries that are likely to explode?
That's ghosting, and it's likely your TV doing it and not the cables.
And Gamestop isn't bundling a used Wii Sports with used Wii systems? For shame!
I learned this the hard way!
Hmm, looks like buyers of used Wiis may get free random mystery VC games. Will you get Sonic? Will you get Legend of Kage? Who the hell knows?
Then again, I'm guessing used Wiis are a rare sight at this point.
I wouldn't ever sell my Wii, but if I did people wouldn't get shit.
Why would you do that? It's not like you can use it anymore if you get rid of your current Wii.
Because I'm an ass?
Because I feel that whoever buys it should have to give Nintendo more monies?
Besides, I'm pretty sure that any major chains that sell used consoles are supposed to wipe them anyway. That's certainly the policy with 360s.
Maybe its like the ring, you put in a certain RE:WE disc and a week later your Wii will die!!!
Now I'm going to have get everyone on my friend's list to change my Wii number because my new system won't have the same one. I won't be able to edit all my Miis either. What a shitload of fuck!
How much are they charging you to fix it? And have you asked them to try to keep your Wii internals?
Where are you putting your Wii? Horizontal or vertical?
Thankfully they don't have the audacity to charge me. Nintendo still has the best customer service, even if they're apparently making shitty consoles now.
I explained my displeasure in having to deal with a new Wii number and all the headaches associated with it, but they didn't seem confident that anything could be done about that.
edit: Cloudeagle, it's been vertical. Perhaps I ought to set my new one horizontally, huh?
Huh, I had heard that vertical (in the stand) was the best way to go. Is it on shag carpet? Or very close to other heat-producing electronics?
No, it's not on the ground and it's over a foot away from the nearest heat-producing source. It has nothing pressed against it either (except the times it's in my pants :winky:)
Hm. Interesting. Wii rot doesn't seem to be a widespread problem, so you must be exceedingly unlucky. Sorry, man.
