The wifi hardware in some Wiis has a tendency to get super hot. I'd suggest turning WiiConnect24 off, but I would suspect your 3rd new Wii wouldn't have this problem. Might want to play it safe, though.
See, that's what really gets to me. I shouldn't have to disable WiiConnect 24 on the off chance it might damage the console. It was supposed to be designed for that and if there's a problem they should fix it. It's a pain in the butt to go into options and turn WiiConnect 24 back on every time I want to read the news channel. I expect better from Nintendo.

I thought there was a way to turn the standby mode off so that WiiConnect24 would only be on when the console was on?
Here's an interesting thing I noticed, I'm not sure if it's a problem or not. Sometimes when I'm playing Wii Sports or something part of the screen with take on a blue tint. When this happens the tint stays there until the Wii gets reset, even if you go back to the main screen. The same thing happens occasionally on the internet channel except one part of the screen is tinted blue and another part is tinted green. It hasn't happened in a while, but I'm not sure what the hell is up with it. Could it be a video cable issue or something? I'm running a vertical Wii Non-Wii24connect with the extra fan, so I don't think it's an overheating thing.

Sounds like a magnetic problem, like something is next to your TV that isn't shielded properly. It's really weird that only Wii Sports is doing that to you though, and not other Wii games or while just watching TV.

Well, I'm too cheap to shell out for cable or anything so right now the Wii is all that's hooked up to the TV. So you think it's something that's magnetically making the TV wonky or something near the Wii that might be magnetic? I have the Wii a fair distance from my computer speakers, but I'd think I'd be getting some kind of gaussing from my monitor if they had magnets in them since they're literally touching it. If it's the TV then I have no goddamn clue what could be doing it.
You should format your Wii Shop Channel and Wii console's system memory prior to selling or otherwise transferring your Wii console to any third party. (For information about privacy and the protection of your personal information, click here.)
To clear information from the Wii Shop Channel, including records of your transactions and rights to download software:
1. Access the Wii Shop Channel.
2. Select "Settings" from the list of options.
3. Select "Remove Wii Shop Channel Account."
Once completed, all information will be erased.
Why would you do that? It's not like you can use it anymore if you get rid of your current Wii.
Because I'm an ass?
Because I feel that whoever buys it should have to give Nintendo more monies?
Besides, I'm pretty sure that any major chains that sell used consoles are supposed to wipe them anyway. That's certainly the policy with 360s.
I'd leave the VC games on there if I was ebaying it. Then I could say "Wii console with 6 games included!!" and some sucker wouldn't read the fine print :P
Also, I flew across the room and unplugged my Wii after reading this thread. I don't want that shit melting
I work at a CompUSA, so I get discounts on the replacement plan, so I bought that for $20.
I returned it (the plan) on Sunday, after realizing that if something were to go wrong with said Wii, only Nintendo would be able to salvage my Virtual Console data.
Just to make sure, it looks something like this, right?
That's definitely gauss. If it's like actually spots or pixelly or something then I have no idea.
Nope, I'd probably recognize it if it was regular gauss, but it's not nearly as spread as that. It's also just one little patch towards the center of the screen if it's blue, or blue on the left of the screen and green on the right. For a while there I was pretty sure I could replicate the blue and green spots by watching a flash video on the internet channel, but I'm not too sure now. I don't know, maybe my TV's borked or something. Either way, I haven't have it happen in a while, so I'm not sure what's up. Maybe I'll try to get a picture if it happens again or something.

Wii Care Thread... Wise fwom your gwave!
I was doing a little x-mas shopping and saw a great deal that I thought I'd let you guys know about.
Anyone looking to add storage space to their Wii should head over to meritline.com now.
I have the 2GB Kingston SD Card, and it works like a dream with my Wii. Great if you don't want to bother with redownloading VC games when your Wii's 512MB of internal memory gets filled up! Plus, with WiiWare just around the corner, now might be the time to invest in some extra storage space.
Great thread. Just read the op, but I just wanna say this: Wii gets warm, that is not a problem, just as long as it doesn't overheat. The temperature it reaches normally was expected by Nintendo and is no cause for alarm. Most people notice that the Wii is a little warm and immediatly think it's broken or rush off to buy one of those cooler thingies.
EDIT: Also, just noticed it was a bumped thread :P
i had started getting the infamous graphics artifacts in 3D-rendered games. there were random blank/white pixels all over the place in Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda TP . it looked like what you would see if your PC's graphics card was overheating and/or dying.
anyone have experience with Nintendo's repair setup? how quick is the turnaround? were the repairs/replacements satisfactory?

Mine took maybe a week total, but I'm relatively close to one of their repair centers.
Came back with all the data still intact, and no problems since. Didn't even have to call anyone, just filled out an online form.
One problem: They don't send you a BOX like Microsoft, they send you a LABEL to stick on YOUR OWN box.

to be fair, what you're sending MS is ZOMG TEH HUEG
what i realized though is that with Nintendo's method, you don't need to wait for the box to first come to you. you can just print up a label, find any old decently-clean box, and send it off right away.
the FedEx i went to to drop my Wii off actually was nice enough to provide a free just-right-size box with packing peanuts for the cushioning. now i just have to wait a week + Thanksgiving break...

my little sister's wii has stopped recognizing the remotes. I did the pairing thing with the red button on the console and on the remote and nothing is helping. It's driving me nuts because they unpaired for seemingly no reason at all.

any ideas?
anything that might be interfering with the bluetooth signal? have you tried replacing the batteries with fresh ones?

I can't imagine what would be interfering and the batteries are definitely not dead. If I get the chance I'll try fresh batteries anyway.
One, this "video card rot" people are talking about, is it common for it to happen in some games but not others? Because I get strange white-surfaced or see-through polygons (small ones) in RE4 and Trauma Center...but yet I've not noticed anything in Guitar Hero 3 or Wii Sports. Odd. I'm pretty sure I need to send this thing in, though.
Two, is Nintendo pretty good about not requiring documentation? I mean, at this point pretty much any console should still be within warranty (it's one year, right?) so I shouldn't need a receipt or anything...and mine is registered by serial number with my Nintendomabob account.
Oh, maybe three. I did the whole linky thing with my Nintendo account for my VC games, but they don't all show up there when I login. Does anybody know if this has been fixed...I'm sure when I talk to Nintendo I can bring it up, but I was just wondering if anybody here has run into that. I'd hate to lose any when I send this in if I don't get the same unit back.

just got a call... my step dad fixed it by doing the same thing I've been doing for 2 days. strange.

Unplug the Wii for about five minutes (just to be safe) and turn it back on. That will probably clear it up.

From what I've heard, it's just easier to see in some games than in others. But I could be wrong.
edit: And Nintendo never required a reciept for any of the three times I sent my DS Lite in, so you're probably fine.
Sweet. Now I just have to see when my warranty expires, so I can see whether or not I can wait until finals week to part with it. Because I don't think I'll really be needing it then.

supposedly ALL Wii systems are technically still under warranty since it's been less than a full year from the original release date.
which is tomorrow.
oops.
(nah, you should still be good as long as your system was bought within the last year.)
as for the "video card" problems, i get the impression that it only happens with certain visual effects, like particle effects or smoke rendering. at least that's how it was on my system.
supposedly ALL Wii systems are technically still under warranty since it's been less than a full year from the original release date.
No, I should be fine. I didn't get mine until nearly December last year. Plus I thought they did the whole "extend by 90 days if you register" thing, which I did. I know on the site it will tell you when it expires, I just need to go check. Later tonight, probably.
I just want to see if I can wait until finals, which is another month. But with that 90 day extension, it shouldn't be an issue.
I'm disappointed that it's crapping out like this...I didn't run it horizontal, didn't leave it in an entertainment center, didn't sit it next to the TV, nothing...it really shouldn't have had heat issues. But as somebody else said, at least if Nintendo is making crappy products now their customer service is still good.
Yeah, video card rot is most apparent when there's smoke effects on screen. But over time it can get bad enough that you can even see it on the Wii menu. If you play a lot of Virtual Console games or something like Super Paper Mario you could go a long time without realizing you have the rot.
Unfortunately, I'm on my third Wii because of this. Maybe I just have bad luck but I'm pretty pissed at Nintendo about this. :x
In response to the general topic of the first page, I have my Wii horizontally, right up next to my TV with my clock radio on top of it. I had it vertically before that, and never really saw any reason to have a preference for either way. I just do whatever's space efficient (my room is tiny).
Anybody notice that third-party Gamecube accessories don't work with the Wii? I don't know if that was stated by Nintendo or not, but it's just something I noticed today.

What third party accessories? Nintendo blocked Action Replay and similar things with a firmware update recently. Hardware accessories like memory cards and controllers work fine.

no kidding. Nintendo customer service has been stellar ever since the NES. i'm hoping that the hardware problems are simply stemming from growth pains (contracting lots of third party manufacturing companies like Foxconn is hard), but i am highly suspect of how WiiConnect heats up the system since there's no active cooling when the system is in standby. i like the WiiConnect features, but the way the system gets too hot is troubling.

I'll probably be disabling WiiConnect24 when I get it fixed. Not worth it. Especially since without AC, my house gets pretty hot in the summertime...that may be part of what caused my problems.

You can store them on Nintendo's servers, too, and save the money.
It is useful if you find yourself needing to transfer saves from the Wii to a PC for some reason, or to fuck around in the Photo Channel, I suppose.
