no kidding. Nintendo customer service has been stellar ever since the NES. i'm hoping that the hardware problems are simply stemming from growth pains (contracting lots of third party manufacturing companies like Foxconn is hard), but i am highly suspect of how WiiConnect heats up the system since there's no active cooling when the system is in standby. i like the WiiConnect features, but the way the system gets too hot is troubling.

I'll probably be disabling WiiConnect24 when I get it fixed. Not worth it. Especially since without AC, my house gets pretty hot in the summertime...that may be part of what caused my problems.

I like having it enabled so that I get the channel updates... but I don't want it on all the time when I go long stretches without playing. My solution: hold the power button on the console until the light turns red. That powers the console down completely. It's 3 seconds of extra work now and then, but the end result is more convenient.

You can store them on Nintendo's servers, too, and save the money.

It is useful if you find yourself needing to transfer saves from the Wii to a PC for some reason, or to fuck around in the Photo Channel, I suppose.

Save a whole $8? I'd rather have the convenience of not having to redownload games, and simply transfer them to/from my SD card.

Also, Nintendo will likely give us the ability to run VC titles and other software directly from SD cards long before they release an external HDD. With WiiWare just around the corner, and complaints already rolling in of people having filled up their on-board storage, I suspect this will happen soon.

Hardware accessories like memory cards and controllers work fine.

    Very, very odd.

I can't seem to get any of my third-party GC controllers to work on my Wii. First-party controllers work just fine.

I know someone who's got a couple of other weird controllers; I'll try them.

Well, to be honest I've only tried one. My friend brought one of his third party controllers over so we'd have another to play Melee with, and it worked fine. I'd never even considered that some third party controllers might not work.

I've got some pixels showing up various times in Metroid Prime 3 and when I play NES games I see them when the screen turns black but it's not something that really ruins the look. I have turned off the WiiConnect24 though (Which sucks cause I liked that feature). I'm waiting to receive Super Mario Galaxy to see if I notice any pixels in that. I've got the extra 90 days so I wanna wait it out. I just don't want to send it in if it's just gonna get screwy again. I can live with the pixelization I see right now anyways.

I tried two controllers; one by Nyko and a wireless one by Pelican. The Pelican was broken as it was, so I knew that ought to not work, but the Nyko refused as well. Then I whipped out this ratty Nintendo controller and it worked.

See, I'm in the "always get it fixed before the warranty runs out if anything is wrong" camp...especially since in many cases this obligates them to either extend the warranty on the replacement item, or it validates that whatever problem you're having began during the warranty period if the repair fails to fix it. In some states you have a lot of specific consumer rights once you've returned an item as defective during a warranty period as well...whereas once the warranty runs out, it's your problem.

I mean, it might not be so bad now...but what if it gets worse?

This is true. Makes me glad I registered it for the extra time. I may just turn WiiConnect24 back on and see how bad it gets before the warranty expires and then send it back to them.

My Wii sometimes doesn't load the channel (game or Mii or any other) the first time after I turn on the console. The screen goes black but never reloads. I have to turn off the system and then turn it back on again and then it will work.
Other times, if I just wait it out, after 2 minutes or so the game will load.

Outside of that slight annoyance, however, it has been running fine. No graphical problems or DREs, just sometimes doesn't load the channel.

Anyone else experience this? As it is getting closer to my warranty expiration (I have the 1 year + 90 days) I am wondering if I should just see if it is something I should get fixed. I'll probably wait until January though so I have it for Christmas an family parties and get it back before Brawl.

It has happened to me. Rarely, but it has. After a while it simply goes to the channel I chose. Maybe it's doing something else, I don't know.

Oh, and this happened for my DS and I think it applies to the Wii as well: when you send it in to Nintendo for warranty service, they reset the warranty timer, so you have another year if the new one screws up.

So my Wii is making this loud buzzing sound (sounds like the CD-ROM needs to be tightened), and this started happening the day that Mario Galaxy came out. So far it hasn't died, but I called up Nintendo last week (on Tuesday) and they set me up a repair tag for me to ship it off to them. The thing is, I have 90 days from last week to ship it off and it's still covered by the warranty (My warranty was up yesterday)... So I was going to wait a little longer till I get some more games for my other consoles (I might rent Mass Effect and then ship out my Wii about that time).

I'd have to assume this applies only if the item is replaced, not repaired. Unless Nintendo is just the most kickass company ever. Usually repairs on an item only reset the timer for that issue, not others.

Then again, Nintendo is pretty kickass in the customer service department. Aren't the Wii/DS their first consoles without lifetime warranties? Or was that the GameCube/GBA?

Either way, they only recently discontinued support at all for the NES. Support for a console you made 20+ years ago is amazing..

So I decided I should send my Wii in for repair due to the graphical errors I get. I set it up online and I received an email but it included a pricing for the repair fee. However my Wii is most definitely still under warranty so I'm wondering if I should just ignore the fee and when the label gets here just sent the Wii in?

Call them on the phone; don't use the online form. It's hard to explain odd situations to an online form.

the phone customer service is actually very easy. you may need to wait on hold a little bit, but the customer service reps have been, on the whole, so much more pleasant than what i've been used to.

i also just got my Wii back from repairs. i have to say i'm pretty pleased overall. all of my data was saved, but they did have to assign me a new Wii system/friend code number. overall i think it took nine days total (not counting the Thanksgiving holiday of Thursday and Friday) from the point i sent my system in to when i got it back.

the returned system had some paper inside summarizing what defects they found and how the system was repaired. in my case they "replaced a circuit board," which i took to mean they just replaced the mainboard. the paper also says that "Nintendo guarantees the workmanship for one year." in short, the warranty is for a new full year. nice.

Just one last thing on this subject... Most people I see running their Wiis vertically do not use the Wii stand stabilizer (the clear circular plastic piece that snaps onto the bottom of the Wii stand), which is stupid as hell. If you care about your Wii at all, USE IT.

It stabilizes it and keeps it from falling over, duh.

Anyway, I'm having a bit of online trouble. We got the Wifi adapter and it worked great for like two or three weeks. Then one morning it just stopped working. We've tried pretty much everything we could think of to fix it, ranging from uninstalling and reinstalling to uninstalling our entire USB hub and reinstalling it. I'm at wit's end here and really don't want to buy another one.

supposedly ALL Wii systems are technically still under warranty since it's been less than a full year from the original release date.

I'm disappointed that it's crapping out like this...I didn't run it horizontal, didn't leave it in an entertainment center, didn't sit it next to the TV, nothing...it really shouldn't have had heat issues. But as somebody else said, at least if Nintendo is making crappy products now their customer service is still good.

My Wi had disc drive problems from day 1 which only became worse overtime. You prob did nothing wrong, it's just a bad unit. And I can confirm the awesome customer service. When my Wii was returned from the initial repair, it was wiped of ALL programs...Nintendo provided overnight shipping to speed things up the 2nd time around and an entirely new Wii per my request given my bad luck.

Well... my Wii just died. I was playing Galaxy, and it turned itself off. So I try to turn it back on, and nothing happens. I almost always run it vertically with the stabilizer, but this particular time I was running it horizontal. I treat it well, but my younger siblings are a different story. They've taken it over to friends houses a few times and I can only guess what horrible things have happened to it on those trips. The problem is it was a gift to my whole family so I can't stop them from using it.

This sucks. I just had to send my 360 back 2 days ago, and now this happens. Is this kind of thing common? I haven't heard of too many people having wii problems.

This was the only thread I could think of that was around recently and also relevant.

What's the point of WiiConnect24? From what I gather it just keeps everything up to date by keeping the console in a standby mode and downloading any updates automatically. Given that, why can't I access forecast/news channels if it's disabled? I'd rather not have it on because I'm perfectly happy to just do updates myself, and given that I'm using the Nintendo WiFi USB adapter, every two minutes or so I cop a little popup box (one of those speech bubble ones) saying "A user is connected to the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector" and it's really, really fucking annoying. Is there any way of disabling those popups without disabling the connection? Just don't wanna have to bother with too much stuff every time I use my DS/Wii.

    Any help/clarification would be great.

P.S. It'd be sweet if we could keep this thread up to date now that there are shitloads more accessories around, easier to filter out the shitty ones.

Does the power light turn red when you plug it in? If not, it may just be your power brick. If it is red and still won't turn on, then it might be your console.

Try unplugging the brick from the wall and system for a few hours and then plug it back in. Worst case scenario, Nintendo should send you a replacement and they don't even ask for the old one back (unless they've changed since last year). My brick fried on me the week of launch, but I had a replacement within 2 days.

WiiConnect24 downloads messages, weather, and news for you automatically, but that's about it. Outside of that it gives you the message about a new update, but it doesn't actually do the update without you. The news and forecast should be accessible without WiiConnect24 turned on so long as you have a wireless signal they can connect with, but I haven't really tried that for myself.

As far as the popup window, I would imagine there should be a way to turn it off, but I don't use the dongle so I can't really help you there.

I carry mine around in my laptop bag. The padded section is great for keeping the console and some extra stuff, and the rest of the bag easily fits everything else.

Wireless nunchuck uses 2.4GHz tech though, which is a shame when the Wii is using bluetooth. Also another set of batteries and I could only imagine that the receiver probably uses more batteries from the wiimote as well. I'll stick to wired for now, I haven't had any problems with it.

I have one and only one issue with my Wii. WiiConnect24 doesn't fade in and fade out, it fades in and jitters out. Fade in, jitter out; fade in, jitter out. I'd rather it was nice and smooth, as intended, but meh -- whatever, right?

The weird part is that it'll eventually smooth out. Let's say I'm absorbed in a 360 game and don't turn on my Wii to see what the pulsing is about for about five days. After several days like that, it'll start fading in and fading out beautifully. I assume the LED or its controller gets warmed up and irons out its glitch. Yet, it has to be on and pulsing for at least four solid days before it warms up enough to be smooth!

Bizarre! It's definitely not enough to worry me or make me send it in -- but it's vaguely annoying.

I really don't see the point of the wireless nunchuk. Has anyone ever really had a problem with that cord?

a wireless nunchuk would be amazing for any sort of boxing game, if there actualy was a good one for the wii.
