Yet another netbook thread...I need better resolution!

I've had one of the very first netbooks for years now: the ASUS EEE 4G, with a gorgeous 7 inch screen and non-replaceable 4 gig SSD. Yet for all its flaws, the thing I find I need the most is resolution. It's 800x480 which is just nothing at all these days. I've lived with this for a long time and it's been a great little machine but it's frustrating to not even be able to surf the web well on it. I've even got a driver somebody hacked up to be able to run in a simulated 1024x768 but it doesn't work very well.

So I've been looking around for a new netbook. Most of what I see is still only 1024x600...I would've thought we'd be doing better than that by now. Doesn't seem like that big of an upgrade from what I've got.

But then I ran across the Acer Aspire One:

The specs seem pretty nice and it's 1280x720. One issue is that it says the max memory supported is 1 gig which I couldn't live with, I'll have to do some research and see if it's replaceable at all.

Anyone have this netbook and can tell me what you think of it? Any other recommendations that have a better resolution than 1024x600? Should I wait for the "next generation" of netbooks, if it's coming soon?

I'm not considering that Alienware one, I don't want to spend too much.

Dual core, 2 gigs of RAM with a max of 4, and 1366x768 resolution. You get what you pay for though.

I'll go with one of my favorite recommendations:

Within the budget you're looking at, you can find a used Lenovo Thinkpad X, which will be just as mobile and sport insanely good build quality. And, you should be able to get one with a core 2 duo or something, instead of an atom. And you'll definitely get your better resolution as well.

Pretty sure that 1GB max thing is a lie. I have an AO522 and it's sitting on my desk right there with a 4GB SODIMM in it.

The maxium memory supported by Win 7 Starter is 2Gigs but that's another matter.

Also, for reference I'm having a great time with it although it did take a bit of effort to get it all working properly with Ubuntu.

My wife has a Dell Vostro http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/vostro-v130/fs. It's an excellent machine that I've recommended here before.

I hate to say it but what's kinda stolen my heart at that size is the HP DM1 series. Alteast a configuration we get up here in Canada. We get it with 4 gigs ram and a 750 gig HDD. I can't seem to find it on the american sites.

That is a great looking machine. And after ASUS I would probably trust HP the most on making a quality netbook (just based on personal experience).

The Acer BZ499, and likely any of the AMD C-50 processor based netbooks can support 4GB of RAM compared to the Intel Atom based ones that support only 2GB. They also drive higher resolutions and grant you a handy HDMI port. That said, running a 10.1 1280x720 screen would be hard on the eyes.

Don't get one with the C-50 CPU, definitely pay the money for the E-350 CPU.
