Sony's games division is in huge financial trouble. Considering dropping
After the recent hackings of the Playstation Network there were concerns from investors about if Sony had done enough to make a secure online service. There were already concerns on the table a few months prior to this because of the LG legal dispute but looking at it now it is clear investors are not being convinced by Sony. It didn't help matters once it came to light that Sony was aware of the holes in PSN's security system. One claimed that Sony should fix something "the moment they notice it because it saves higher unneeded costs made later". Some had done a survery which I can't go into too much detail about here, though it concerned the consumers who were angry at Sony over their details being lost. Both investors and consumers are convinced Sony didn't pull it's weight with their security service.
Furthermore they considered dropping Vita. A few weeks prior to E3 there were discussions about if Sony can stand to sell it at such a low price but it was decided that the price is $250/£230 to stop competitor Nintendo having too much of an edge. Investors have also questioned if Vita can survive in the changing mobile market. You may have heard already but there were strong discussions about not making a PSP 2 at all given Nintendo's dominance on the games handheld market and the fact that mobile phones have started to take over.
Its not set in stone yet but the Playstation 3 may very well be Sony's last home console to launch. Microsoft have already started work on their next system and Nintendo is launching soon. The problem Sony has is Playstation 4 is still in the planning stages and there are worries that Sony is leaving the PS 4 "too late to launch". I have also spoken to key members and some higher up the food chain have said that Sony may be considering dropping the race if Vita doesn't meet expectations to focus their efforts elsewhere.
I am already risking enough by posting what I have done. PS 3 has had concerns since the first year it came out. They have evaluated their PSN security model several times after it was hacked. People said they should have gone public the moment it happened but higher-ups didn't listen. I cannot reveal too much about the situation or myself but let me tell you it isn't looking good.

Yeah, something of this scale... source.
I could make some anonymous account and say the same thing about the GWFL division of Microsoft.
I've read up in an old May 2011 issue PlayStation Magazine that Sony's PlayStation suite ap will allow all supported Android phones including the Xperia to have access to PSN. Which means you can play you PSX classics on your phone now.
Thinking back to it now, that may have been a hint that they we're thinking of cutting their losses.
The entire premise is ridiculous. Why on earth would Sony suddenly drop SCE when they've only just gotten the division back into regular profitability?
Bullshit. And I should know because I work at Capcom. I'm wiping my ass with the prototype code of Mega Man Legends 3 as I type this
Yeah, sure.
And Taky works at Bioware.
Pull one of the other ones, it has bells on.
last sunday my uncle told me that the second half of skyward sword is a mature steampunk epic with dark themes set in space. Also you get the triforce if you beat the mecha-postman.

God I wish that were true. Anything to avoid playing the same game for the eleventh time.
Hmm, while I don't think it's likely, let's speculate on what would happen if this was true.
Obviously Microsoft would try to hoover up what they could of the Sony playerbase, though depending on how far apart the next MS console is compared to the WiiU, it may become necessary for developers to just design for the WiiU and put out a minorly upgraded version for the NextBox.
Honestly, if Sony bailed, it think we could potentially see Apple finally try to move into that sector. I could see them coming up with some sort of gimmick exclusive to their platform. (Maybe an all digital distribution console) and trying to sell it based on that. Maybe team up or acquire a few game companies while they're at it. (It'd be hilarious if Bungie went back to developing for Apple after all these years.)
In the very least, would hope that MS would get off it's ass and start persuing a greater first party presence.

Microsoft have Halo and Gears of War. What more do you greedy fucks want?
I'm pretty sure sony has alot of other divisions that are doing worse than SCE.
Sony Ericsson I heard is not doing too hot.
PSN: Antiwhippy

On a serious note, if Microsoft were to acquire some of SCE's inhouse studios, given the track record I can't see them doing anything other than having them make one game and then firing them all.

Something other than Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza.
EDIT: and Nintendo-esque Kinect stuff.

If true that could hurt my chances of seeing an Xperia 2 in the next 2 or 3 years.

I knew it!
They did recently move the GFWL marketplace to the the Xbox website. Which is actually way better than previous incarnations of the GFWL marketplace.
Heh.
