That reminds me of that poem by Tao Lin that concludes with him just repeating the line "the next night we ate whale" repeatedly, until he gets bored with it

the print version repeats it thirty thousand times

No. Good story is the implication that what is happening, what has happened, or what is being examined is engaging, interesting or thought provoking.

It's so terribly cliched now but Hemingway's "shortest story" is a great example of this:

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

That is pretty standard writing but a great story.
I would call that great writing, not a great story

it's the execution people remember not the story

I actually do agree that this, as a package, is brilliant writing.

But when I'm talking about writing versus story, I'm talking about technical proficiency.

There is nothing wonderfully stylistic or inventive about Hemingways usage of words or punctuation or sentence structure there.

But he told a complete, heartbreaking and compelling story.
I would say the invention and stylistic accomplishment is devising a set of words that causes the reader to supply a "complete, heartbreaking, and compelling story" where there is none

what do you mean there is none?

    baby expected, buy baby shoes

    baby lost, sell shoes

that's a pretty complete - and heartbreaking - story right there
didn't Tim Buckley do that story once

My problem with Hemingway is that he did things his own way.

    The Heming way.

Abd, the first part is what Eddy said, just to clarify. I was distracted while writing. I was saying writers and audiences are more familiar with genre norms, so the art of writing has had to evolve and become more creative in order to impress or thrive.

I also agree with your second point. That's what I was saying. Genres are so muddled and crossed now that using them as a benchmark is kind of silly.

    And Fluffy, CC:

It is not proving super lucrative, but it is easy enough to start out. I just troll Craigslist and find solicits for light erotica for women's sites or whatever. They pay like $50 a story, and it takes them 2-4 weeks to get back to you. Just sent out my first wave.

I have a friend who has written porn scripts. It made him a couple hundred dollars.

look I'm just making the point that BABY DIED is not an inherently brilliant story, and that it's the writing that makes it effective

I mean I do dislike Hemingway but I'll give him props on some stuff and I do think this one is pretty clever and can't argue its emotional efficacy

Who said the baby died? Perhaps they gave the baby up for adoption? Perhaps they had too many pairs of baby shoes? Perhaps the baby has no feet?

The thing that makes it a great story is that it can mean so many things to so many different audiences. It is simple as you can get from a technical writing standpoint, but from a narrative POV, it is the most abstract story possible.

Captain America is just statist propaganda created by the CIA to make liberty loving Americans want to go overseas and unconstitutionally interfere in European politics. :3

Actually that is a big misconception for two reasons:

    1) A lot of people work in porn, especially in this economy. Porn pays decently enough and there is never a shortage of work.

but much, much, much more importantly,

    2) You would never EVER put porn on your resume.

Risk. Risk. Risk. Do you know how many different editions of Risk there are? Let me tell you – there are more editions of Risk than there are people who play board games. And do you know why there are so many different editions of Risk? Because the game is so bad, people keep trying to fix it. Risk: Godstorm. Risk: 2210 AD. Risk: Balance of Power. Risk: Star Wars. The common factor being “Risk”. The common factor being shitty old shitty Risk.

I think they are downplaying the WWII thing in the marketing

I guess I understand how they'd want to turn the focus more on the purely superhero aspects of the film: advanced technology, crazy looking villain, Cap getting the serum, explosions, and a guy fighting people in a costume. But the time period is vital for this film, and the idea that it could detract from it being a "comic book" movie instead of add to it is just silly. Give the public some credit.

You know how Marketing Drones are; one guy in a meeting wondered aloud if Jocks would reject the film as being about "faggy history stuff" and they designed a commercial around that random fear
