I'm wondering if Bioware had a preference for people who already pre-ordered the game... For those who got an invite - did any of you NOT place a pre-order?
Not saying that people should place their orders now in the hopes of getting a beta key. That would be silly.
As to Beta sign up, their hardware scanning tool could not pick up my secondary video card (and actually much better) nVidia540m. I have an XPS system that sports a Sandy Bridge CPU and all it saw was the integrated graphics chip. The option to modify/correct your specs does not let you change that.
In KOTOR I and/or II, there were things like this. You would sometimes access a computer console and if your repair was high enough level, you'd get an option to fix some remote lasers or something; if your security skill was high enough, you could turn on guard droids. Performing those actions weren't absolutely necessary, but they helped make things go smoother. If none of those skills were high enough, you'd usually just have to fight more enemies or not be able to access some locked chests.
What you've described sounds pretty much like mechanics I've seen in Mass Effect. Maybe it's a mechanic present in most Bioware games?
As I think I've told you before, the guild I am rolling with is probably going to end up on an RP server with Rouge Squad. (Vote YES on Sixty Six)
Is the guild name aiming to be funny? Or is that a typo? Rouge is a kind of make-up. Not trying to harass, but if your GM intended Rogue Squad and typed Rouge instead, he may want to remake. =P
a bit disappointing. I understand that JK/JC and SI/SW share ships, but the space scenes for each opening are about a total of 20 seconds long and are identical. JC/JK and SI/SW are no different at all, given the ships are the same. Smuggler/Trooper and IA/BH are identical, too, minus their respective ships used.
The Trooper ship looks clunky, too, as if it is wobbling and about to tip over (if that were possible in space). My guess is they had to do something given the Smuggler ship does a barrel roll. The SI/SW scene is a bit awkward with the very large starship just sitting, completely stationary. It would be more believable if it was moving along, just very slowly.
Maybe I'm being too critical, but I guess I just expected a bit more variety given the scenes are only like 20 seconds.
Every star wars film (and most of the videogames and other stuff) have started the same way. Yellow text scrolling into the distance, then pan down to a starship floating over a planet.
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
I understand the scrolling text and space scene. That is expected. My complaint was more the content of the space scene. Watch the JK and JC video. Identical. Watch the SI and SW video. Identical. The other classes are the same, minus a ship substitute. I didn't expect something other than the scrolling text and space, that is Star Wars, but I did expected a least a little variety in what was happening in said space scene.
I'm thinking that it cuts off before you really get anything. The scrolling text and music is good, I think it's funny they write "HAVOC SQUAD" the way they do. Then there's a few seconds of a ship flying. It cuts off right before they jump you into the ship and show your character and start the acting.
You know the trooper intro is going to jump to the troops and the ship bouncing around as it takes fire and all the awesome/generic space marine glory. The 30sec (if that) of ship scene won't even be remembered.
Althought the very best intro to a game I've played in a long while might be ME2. Holy shit was that amazing. So I guess Bioware might want to step it up a bit.
Why's that relevant? Because the latter half of the article is a discussion of how much a threat SWTOR is to WoW.
I don't buy it, simply because I don't believe in The Prophecies of the Chosen WoW-killer. SWTOR can be hugely successful, with its own multiple millions of subscribers, and WoW will probably still have a large chunk.
It's just odd to see these theories spill over into mainstream media. Weird.
The idea that WoW was ever going to have a 'killer' that displaced it as the massive, suffocating king of the market is kind of silly in hindsight. It was always going to be a death of a thousand cuts.
Most every other mmo has gone out with a slow sort of whimper rather than a bang; I don't expect WoW to be different.
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

Every time I see WoW subscriber numbers it shits me off a bit. Can't they provide the numbers without China? Most other western MMOs don't get released in China at all and it makes up a large percentage of WoW's userbase. It also gives a more realistic target for competing games to reach for. 1-2 million subscribers doesn't seem to bad against WoW's 4-6 million without China.

1- No one should buy into that theory, simply because WoW has many heavily invested players spanning across many types : Over the top enthusiasts, addicts and real world profit employees to name just a few. Meaning a good deal of people will, at the very least, keep their WoW accounts active even if the best game in the universe happens to come by and smack them in the face.
2- It makes me happy to see this spilling over the main stream. Games are less and less a thing exclusive to Geeks, and Geeks are not done taking over the world (bit by bit).

What you say makes sense, but I think we can all agree that WoW is... unprecedented. I'm curious to know how that will pan out.
"The 'World of Warcraft' development team is also working on the next content update, which will include major new raid and dungeon content," he said. "We believe that this new end-game content will keep the game fresh for current players and provide compelling reasons for lapsed players to come back."
Morhaime added that it would be the "largest content update since 'Cataclysm'" and said it would arrive "later this year."
Don't you ever change Activision.

Put "rouge" in the guild finder, and enjoy. The guild "The Rouges" Message:
The treaty is broken my republic brothers we must stand together against the sith empire, we are the rouges,i am beadl the jedi knight, but i need men for my army and squad one lucky jedi will be my apprentice and 4 including my apprentice will be in my squad the 501st. - May the force be with you
For the French guilds it makes sense, since rouge is "red" in French. For all the people that just misspelled it though, hilarious.
I think WOW will maintain a relatively strong position for a while. The game is just too good. I have read their numbers are diminishing and they are diminishing a tad more rapidly after they did at this time after their last expansion. So the beast is withering, but its just so huge, that its going to take at least 2 years I think before its really knocked off the pedestal.
I think one thing going against WOW is their trick of just releasing new gear, new raids and constantly making green be the new purple, is wearing thin. At some point, the engine itself is showing its age. I think it still has great life in it, but there's no doubt in my mind WOW has officially reached middle age malaise.
I crave leaks so badly, but don't want the magic ruined for me. I'm gonna not watch those intro videos. I want to so badly though.
I've stopped reading betacake. I know enough about the game to know I want to play it. I read some sites (TORWars for one) and monitor twitter hashtags, but I generally only click high-level interviews and general discussion, rather than seek "beta tester leaks".
Besides, the September weekends are now only a few weeks away, last thing I want to do is spoil that weekend.
I am officially on a SWTOR diet, to prepare for the smorgasbord ahead

Actually I think Rouge is a common mistake, be it from a French, English or any other language perspective. As far as I am concerned (a French speaking guy from around Montreal), seeing the word rouge being used in such a context within an English phrase is worse than noticing a simple typo. I automatically switch from reading in English to French, and the first word I read makes no sense, and I need to switch back to English. It's like throwing a wrench in the machinery.
I'm not saying that it drives me mad - I just want people to have a glimpse of how "out of place" the word sounds for us.
However I'm more curious about his mention of the 501st garrison. Unless it's related to some lore context which I am not familiar with, I think this guy may be associated to these guys. They pop up from time to time in most local cons between Quebec and Ontario.

Rouge is my bane. For years I have played Rogue classes and have been constantly assaulted by rouge. Even better is when someone is playing a Rogue (legit Rogue, not 'Scoundrel' that is a Rogue class) and still spells it 'Rouge.'

I don't know what you all are on about. Rouge Squadron is a wonderful guild.
(Put in Spoiler for safety, but nothing is really a spoiler.)
Q: You (if you’re the same person who wrote QA13) mentioned that you thought November was an optimistic release date, and yet others have said the game seems pretty complete? What makes you think it won’t (or perhaps shouldn’t) make a November release?
A: I', not the guy from QA #13, I am the guy from #10+11. I'm not going to lie that guy had no real idea what he was talking about, this game will easily hit a November. This new build is rough, but they took 5 steps foward, but only 2 back. We're figuratively 3 steps ahead of where we were, you'll see this game in November.
Q: In your last Q & A you mentioned that leveling as a healer is slow and painful. Can you elaborate on why a bit?
A: The last guy (#13) was a idiot. Leveling a Healer and Tank is the same as leveling a DPS, there is no real noticeable difference. My Powertech in +Defense gear is actually out killing Merc DPS players. If your a healer, spec'd as a healer, as long as you wear appropiate gear, there is no real difference.
Maybe I've been playing the wrong MMOs, but my experience with goons has been largely positive. They've been laid back, had a good sense of humor, and been very helpful and knowledgeable.

Also, not SW:TOR, but on Betacake:

Apparently you can be sued now for using the word 'Scrolls.' Shit is wack, yo.

To me, it feels like watching the first 2 minutes of any Star Wars movie...
It's tradition.
Like how we slather corn dogs in mustard and maple syrup before we feed them to bears at the zoo.
Bears don't even like mustard, but there you go.

edit: but I suppose it's not so much about the ships as about the starting planets. Why have separate scenes for the same planet?

Well from my experience, in MMO's they solely exist to grief and will do so at every opportunity.
EDIT: And I don't grief... at every opportunity.

You and me should hang out.
As for griefing, I prefer to leave griefing to FPS games and the occasional open world PvP scuffle.
