And just to clarify, aren't the red crystals synthetic?
Yes. I know it's possible to manipulate synthetic crystals so they are other colors, but as I recall, the default synthetic color is red. Synthetic crystals also have that delightfully distinct high-pitched noise as they turn on.
Man I hope the game lets you pick what your saber sounds like.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Indeed, this. There isn't any 'controlling' of a mine filled with red crystals. They create the things through Sith Alchemy.

Okay then a storehouse. FFS I'm trying to retcon here!
The only three colors that everyone has easy access to are red, blue, and green. All other colors are exceedingly rare, have boosted stats attached to them, and are considered status symbols. I believe this was mentioned in another earlier Q&A months back, so I don't think I'm breaking NDA with this.
It is a system I am not thrilled about and hope changes when they do the itemization pass mentioned in a Q&A and the Ilium control stuff.

Not Sith alchemy so much as machines to simulate the geological conditions needed to form the crystals. The Sith mostly do it because being all secretive, they can't exactly pop on over to Ilum to snag some crystals.
But enough unrelated nerding before Echo forces a title change again. Still want to be able to choose how your lightsaber sounds when you ignite it.

According to beta testers, there are many lightsabers that sound very different than what we're traditionally used to. Pretty much everybody who's experienced the game has said how great the sounds are and that, when turning on a rare saber or rattling off an epic gatling gun cannon as a commando, everyone around you will know how cool you are.
I'm less worried about graphics-swapping stuff for gameplay reasons than I am for visual/QoL ones.
I mean, it's down the list of things I care about, but I do want the game to have a style and be visually consistent. Those things contribute to my enjoyment of the game. I don't care to be assaulted by leather-chaps-wearing jedi warriors swinging their double-bladed pink lightsabers around.
It sounds like this game will have a decent number of visual customization options, from light/gray/dark styled gear to a pretty developed character creator. I'm unconvinced that players need to be given the tools they need to make themselves look as obnoxious as possible.
As of right now, there's a fair amount of Jedi running around with red lightsabers. The fact that you're allowed to do this kind of irks me.
IMO Red should be Sith only and Green/Blue Jedi only. The rest can be up for grabs.
Makes perfect sense from an RPG point of view. Jedi kills a Sith NPC, Sith NPC drops a red saber. Sith kills a Jedi NPC, Jedi NPC drops a blue/green saber.
I can say that the sounds bring me right into the spirit of Star Wars.
I am very pleased.
ever since i found out they made the blaster sounds by hitting steel guy wires with a wrench ive wanted to go recreate it but never found the time or appropriately sized wrench
It makes logical sense that you can shove whatever crystal you like in there but still I'd prefer it if red sabers were only available to sith. It's so iconic and gives an instant and gratifying battlefield aesthetic to see jedi vs sith with instantly recognisable coloured sabers.
EDIT: for instance in the first cinematic when all the sith come pouring out of the landing craft.
This. Also, the entire storyline of Jedi vs. Sith is steeped in millennia-old tradition and ceremony. To just say that a Jedi can physically pick up and use a red 'saber because "why not" is completely and totally missing the point. Red is the color of passion, and therefore has no place at a Jedi's side. Symbolism is very important to Force users.

The Jedi that use red lightsabers are obviously suffering from a color vision deficiency.

Fact: Miraluka are 100% colorblind, in addition to being 100% everything-blind. This does not prevent them from picking a lightsaber color.

As someone that suffers from colorblindness, I assure you that I cannot tell what color lightsaber my lvl14 Jedi Knight is using.
While the Jedi used natural crystals, the Sith often used red-hued synthetic crystals. Sith-made synthetic crystals create a slightly more powerful blade when energized by the dark side of the Force, occasionally demonstrating the ability to "break" Jedi lightsaber blades, disrupting the energy circuit and shorting out the weapon. However, this rarely happened, and as synthetic crystals demonstrated a slightly lower amount of maneuverability, this advantage was very slim.
Yeah, I can save them the time of doing their little poll: Sorcerer wins, every time. The strength of their crowd control and damage is comically overpowered right now, and has been for a while from what I've heard.
Eh, that video is pretty superficial, as far as I can tell..flashy and nicely animated, yes, but pretty much useless at this point since barely anyone (including probably the person who made the video) has played the game.

I am so going to wield a red saber on my Light Side Jedi Knight if I can. Was going to use green, but red sounds better.

Hah. Pretty much. It's basically an animated version of every "Nerf A/Buff B" speculative thread that's rampant in most of the class forums on the official site.
But congrats, I guess, to RR.com for finding animations that match the few skills they're aware off.
You guys talked a lot about Game Testing Weekends in the panel. Can you give us some details about what to expect? When is it going to start ramping up?
Well, like we said at the panel, we're starting the first one this coming weekend -- September 2nd. We are going to invite a huge batch of brand new players who have never been in testing before. We're going to bring them all in on a brand new server for one weekend and we'll see what happens. Who knows? It could catch on fire!
There are different series of tests each weekend obviously. Once people are invited, are they going to be in for the entire thing, or is this different sets of people every single week?
I believe that it is going to be an entirely new group of people every time. The goal of that is to get as many of the 1.5 million people who have signed up for testing in as possible. We really want to get people's hands on the game because we talk all the time about the game, but the thing about it is you're never going to fully believe us until you get your hands on it. That is what convinces people that this is the BioWare game they've been looking for.
Mixed, because it means I have a higher chance of getting some test time, but at the same time means that if I get in and it's a weekend that I am busy, I am boned.

Yeah...yeeaah. Honestly. I'd rather not play test at all, if it's just for a weekend. I got shit to do most weekends - I'd like a chance to really get to see the game. Who wants to feel rushed?

I would like to experience the game. But I agree, I don't want to be rushed. Hopefully for future weekends they give us more than a few days heads up. Like you, I am usually busy on weekends. I can make some time, but if they send out invites on like a Wednesday, probably not happening.
Well, if Act 3 really isn't as polished yet as some beta testers claim, then I can see why Bioware aren't letting people play for multiple weekends ;-)
Playing just one weekend would suit me just fine, personally - I really don't wanna spoil too much beforehand.

Truth. And I intend to run through the class that I didn't want to main anyways.
I like the idea of playing the mirror class of my main though during the beta. Mostly to get a look into the newer mechanics. Essentially, I'd like to play the Agent on the beta weekend(s), to better help understand the cover mechanic for when I play my Smuggler at launch.
Chris Collins confirmed that the large wave of beta invites to Europeans will indeed go out in a few days - yay!
..and those invited will have to play on US servers - boo.

Imperial ships don't usually take the shape of a sphere or pseudo-sphere.
A moon shaped one would have a remarkable circumference indeed.
thats no moon... its a PA SWTOR player!

I'm thinking I may need to reconsider a Jedi Guardian come release.
I thought that video would actually be a "versus" video, showing a fight between the two. I am very disappointed.

I will be too as long as I don't get stupid
Is it true you get a pink crystal for your blaster/lightsaber if you pre order and if you do so you can just not use it?
