Um...not really? The circumstances between that and this were pretty different. For one thing the limitations on gameplay because of the technology didn't help. Only so many things an ugly dot could do on the Atari.
Another problem was nobody really knew how to run a game company profitably. Which includes pricing games.
Now that you are, and now that you take your own trips instead of trips your parents take you on, the time you have to kill really isn't as big.

they're still great for people who commute on busses or trains though and can help kill time waiting for a plane (or flying on a plane), assuming you don't have other work to get done
when I drove across the country in my motor home a few years ago I played on my game boy to wind down after 12+ hours on the road each day because there ain't much else to do at a creepy rest stop in the middle of the night

Phone games are on average shit. 1 Angry birds does not a viable platform make.
