I want to make some very simple wood storage boxes. The boxes will be used to hold beer bottles and have dividers in them. They will potentially get wet. I'm not good with building things. I can figure out the math easy enough, but not sure what type of wood to use or were to get it. We have a Mendards close.
So, what kind of wood would be best and what kind of saw do I need? I have drill and hammer/nails. Screws would be best?
I'm going to try and make "rope handles" I think. Also, cheaper is better. No need for really thick or really fancy wood.

Not sure what specific wood type you would need, but get pressure treated wood. It helps it withstand the elements (wetness, sun, etc) better, and it'll last longer. I think screws will work better for you, as they will tend to stay in a bit better than nails if the box is being moved around a lot.
I made some garden planters out of fence boards (1.50 a piece). Those may end up not being the ideal wood to use for you, but since they're so cheap, you can buy a couple of boards and try different cuts and such. I have a circular saw that I use for most of my wood cutting since I dont have a huge work area for one of those table saws. Also, you can get them for like 30-40 bucks some places, though be warned they may not last as long as some of the superpriced ones.

thanks, where do you buy fence boards? Can I use a handsaw? They boxes don't have to be prefect, but would like them not all crappy looking, lol.
You could build a stable box out of 1x4's easy enough and drill some holes and stick (pound) dowels through for the dividers and use wood glue to secure them. Rope handles will be easy.. drill 2 holes, stick rope through, tie knots.
Get a cheap varnish or water proofer and you're good to go.
I would use pine
Whether they find a life there or not, I think Jupiter should be called an enemy planet.

Most hardware stores should sell fence boards. I got mine from Home Depot.
A hand saw should work fine. They're reasonably thin, so they shouldn't be too murderously difficult to cut no matter how you choose to do it.

Plywood. 3/8ths for the box, 1/4 for the dividing panels. Screw it and glue it, then give it a couple of coats of marine varnish, and they'll carry as much beer as you can for the next 30 years.

1/4th what?
I have always heard bad things about plywood, in terms of durability.

Plywood will give problems with durability without the varnish, but that's mostly because of the elements. We're not talking about building a deck here, for a box it will work fine.
