The Knight followed his escort through the Keep's courtyard and into the main hall. He shook the polished shield at his side; it was a magnificent piece of craftsmanship, but he was still training heavily to adjust to the new equipment.

Dietrich and Lucas had congratulated their friend for earning a new piece of equipment and immediately took him to the nearest tavern to celebrate. Dietrich insisted on Dermond recounting to him the fierce combat in the confined quarters; Lucas, however, insisted on Dermond recounting to him the fierce look in the Fey woman's eyes, and what her hindquarters looked like in their confines. When they returned, Lucas held up between his friends, Hans eyed Dermond's new shield with not a little bit of envy.

The Knight recognized Eli and bowed his head to him, "Greetings." His gaze passed over the sets of armor and nodded to himself, admiring their quality. "I trust you have been well?" Dermond wasn't looking Eli's way, but the question was obviously meant for him.

"Hello," Eli smiled at him, before going back to studying the maps. "I'm feeling recovered, at least, after a nice, quiet few days. How about you? How did your superiors react to the news we found?"

"Look, you've got to tell me what I did, that's the law isn't it?" Lyashanna rasped the words out to the usher. Seeing who sat at the end of the large room her face somehow became even paler. "Oh depths, what have I done to be brought before a comm-" Spying the knight and mage, realisation dawned. Finally, you're going up in the world Lya.

Relieved that the room was long enough that her stammering hadn't been heard, she pulled down her new goggles and attempted to look nonchalant. The eye pieces themselves were a topside fashion, useless in the murk of Underdeep, but this pair sported dials and (she suspected) enchantments that allowed improved focus. Plus, you couldn't tell which way she was looking.

Stopping alongside the other two, she made as if to have just seen them, giving a curt nod. She was glad mother had had time to wash her jacket.

"Once Miss Helena and the blackguard arrive, we'll begin," Commander Graeme rumbles. A page enters the room bearing a large silver tray loaded down with choices bits of fungus, cheese, a pitcher of ale with six stacked mugs, and a selection of fruits not usually found in Underdeep.

As if the Commander's words had summoned her, Helena dashes onto the scene. Coming to a sudden stop beside the rest of the group, she hunches over a bit, short of breath.

*huff*"I'm terribly sorry, sir!*gasp*"Please forgive me for holding things up!"*puff*"Helena Milner reporting for duty, sir!"*cough*

Helena commited what she considered a grave offense: she slept in a little bit. She left in such a frazzled hurry that she almost forgot her new mace, that Captain Chandler had so kindly bestowed upon her, despite her recent failures. She would have to work harder, to retroactively earn it. She was ready to defend the guard with her life.

Wiping the sweat from her brow, she stood up straight, attempting to make herself look presentable, like a soldier. She noticed Eli and the fey woman and couldn't help but feel surprised to see them both there, though she kept her mouth shut.

"My commanding officer was concerned. I am to continue pursuit of the kobolds that escaped until they're killed, captured, or I'm told otherwise," Dermond trailed off as the sounds of footsteps signaled the arrival of Lyashanna.

The Warden returned the nod he was given, "Good day, miss. Your nose has healed well, I apologize for landing on you in the first place." He seemed pleased to get that off of his chest. Granted, an injured nose was probably favorable to burns, but as the chivalrous type Dermond had been feeling guilty about injuring a woman.

Dermond seemed puzzled by Helena's rushing, "Guardsman? Is something the matter?"

Eli smiles hello to Lya, noting her obvious discomfort at being called here. "Do you think they're going to bill us for the tunnels that blew up?" he asks with a wink.

He turns to see Helena's entrance, still smiling. Always the drama with this one, he thinks. "Good news! You're not the last one here," he says.

He pours some ale into a mug, then gestures to the others, as to whether they want some.

Rho had a thick head. The night before in Forlan's tavern had been a quiet one so he had spent the night playing dokei and drinking his host's hospitality. When Forlan's maid had roused him and told him he had a caller he had thrown a boot that missed her by double the earthen girl's height.

The blackguard was none to happy to hear that the runner had come from the Commander. He had no intention of serving Underdeep again. Cullain's favor did not seem to follow when he went to the aid of the city. Only after a long discussion did the mercenary decide that he should go.

In the halls and training grounds of the keep, each and every sound was like a spike being driven through the top of his bald skull. He winced and cringed at each new sound. The Warpriest dashed past him and his escort. "Hey! Watch it you crazy..." He couldn't finish the insult before the rattling inside his skull nearly crushed his consciousness.

The blackguard entered the room seconds after Helena, bleary eyed and disheveled.

Dermond shook his head, "I do not touch the stuff. I must always be alert and have my wits about me; an Iron Warden can be called to arms at any hour, day or night."

He watched Rho enter and Dermond's eyebrow twitched upwards, "Perhaps your blade would find purchase in the enemy more easily if its bearer's vision wasn't so blurred he didn't know what to swing at." The knight obviously disapproved of people he thought lacked self control when it came to alcohol (though he gave Lucas a pass) or other mind-altering concoctions. He gave Rho a disapproving look and a small 'hmph' before crossing his arms and waiting to see if the porter would return with water.

Jumping almost a foot in the air when the mug brushed her elbow, Lya pulled up her goggles and nodded her thanks. The eyepieces restricted peripheral vision it seemed.
Forgetting her dainty act, she took a hefty swig of the ale, wiping her mouth with a sleeve.

"Now that you've all arrived. The captains and I have agreed that hiring the four of you again is the best course of action," he says, looking from Dermond to Lya to Eli and then Rho. "Helena will accompany you as before as a representative of the Thunder Guard. You won't like this, but to minimize contamination, I will be withholding critical intelligence gathered over the past few days by agents of Underdeep. While we follow up on that, merchants traveling from S'vaar have reported ships docked at the wharfs of the Keep of Shadows on the Arachnis Isles." Graeme rises from behind the desk and rolls open a map detailing the Arachnis Isles, a collection of six small islands a weeks travel by ship to the southeast of Underdeep.

"You'll setting sail on the Salt Wench and heading south by southeast towards the Arachnis Isles. The captain of the Wench will wait a distance away from the isles until you signal for them with these," he says as he flips open a small, wax sealed stone chest. Inside are six night dragons, long, painted tubes covered in bright flowers and a fuse at the bottom, tied to a sturdy wooden rod.

"These are usually used for celebrations, but they're handy as signal devices as needed. Scout the isles, defeat any forces you encounter if possible, and report back within two weeks." The commander of the Thunder Guard opens a second chest of rough pine, bound with iron. Inside is a sizable sum of gold horns, silver talons, and two platinum dragons on top.

"Use these coins to purchase supplies for the trip. Any surplus is yours," he rumbles as he rolls up the map of the isles and tosses it onto the coins. "Any questions?"

The Salt Wench sails in three days. You have 800 gold to spend on supplies. Use these days wisely. Also, remember that a week is ten days long. So you're going to be at sea for a minimum of six days. This gives you fourteen days to complete your task. Commander Graeme expects you back in Underdeep by September 20th.

"They're stable enough. Just don't let them fall into a fire." Commander Graeme snaps the stone lid shut and seals it with a fresh coat of wax. A page runs in with a pitcher of water for Dermond.

"For lack of prey, the spiders turned to cannibalism," the commander says, taking his seat again. "Their numbers have been greatly reduced, if not wiped out by whomever has taken over the main isle. After the completion of the seawall, we no longer had need of that outpost on the Eternal Sea."

Rho flinched at the sound of the chest snapping shut. Why does everyone have to be so cursed loud, he thought. He took a glass of water from the porter and began to slowly drink it, ignoring most of the conversation. When Eli mentions spiders, the blackguard pales visibly.

    "Spiders?"
"For lack of prey, the spiders turned to cannibalism," the commander says, taking his seat again. "Their numbers have been greatly reduced, if not wiped out by whomever has taken over the main isle. After the completion of the seawall, we no longer had need of that outpost on the Eternal Sea."

The pallid color of Rho's skin begins to recede as the color returns upon hearing this. "But you're not sure they are gone?" he rasps.

"Understood. I shall make sure that no harm befalls this city." Dermond saluted smartly, turned on his heel and left for the Iron Wardens. Things had certainly been moving swiftly for him as of late: what started as a goodwill gesture to clear out a few vermin was now sending the knight places he'd never even heard of.

As he walked he made a mental vow to try speaking to his partymates and get to know them. The Iron Warden wasn't used to strangers watching his back and his training told him not to turn his back on someone that knew how to wield a blade, or worse, a wand.

After Dermond's exit, Eli slips into "costing out the caravan" mode.

"Let's start with rations. At current prices, journeybread for two weeks for five puts us over budget, so that leaves trail rations. It's more weight, but a lot cheaper, and we'll keep the bulk of it back at the ship, anyway. So that's... 100 gold spent."

"I assume everybody already has an adventurer's kit?" He tries to read the expressions of everyone at the table. "If not, that's thirty gold each, so please speak up about it. We'll probably want at least a few climber's kits as well, in case we hit some rough terrain - let's say three of those, twelve gold total. It would be nice to have some everburning torches, but I don't think we can afford them - we can get a dozen sunrods for one of them."

"Helena, what additional supplies will you need as healer, for a trip like this? Let's assume that, even with reduced numbers of spiders, we'll still be dealing with more poisons than usual. Should we pack special items for that?"

"Lya, how many arrows will you need to cover you for this trip? Feel free to pad the number, arrows are still cheap."

"Rho, I've been thinking - it would be useful for you to have more ranged combat ability, especially if we get pinned down more like we did with the slingers. Since you have some of the broadest weapon training of any of us, how would you feel about us picking up a heavy crossbow for you?"

He leans back, reviewing his numbers. "That puts us at around 210 so far, for food, climbing, and light. What else do we need?"
Dunno if this works, but I'm going to try Dungeoneering and Nature checks, to see if I can think of anything else we might need.

Clearly glad that the formalities are out of the way, the fey shrugs "I got more than I suppose we need, but I don't want to reach for empty when some giant spider's scuttling at me. I know a guy- not sure he does receipts though..."
She nods at the panardian. "Could pick up some bolts for Rho while I'm there, if er Cullen was it? Well if he approves of that sort of weaponry."

"I'd be inclined to go with a full quiver for each island, with a couple of quivers extra for fallback. There's nothing worse than a skilled archer with no arrows, and the cost of buying too many is small. 240 arrows for you, and 160 bolts for Rho, if he likes the crossbow idea, makes 32 gold. Can you get them cheaper than that?"

To the commander, Eli asked, "I assume that the ship will pick us up between each island? So that we only have to pack in what we need for one island at a time?"

"Okay, so 32 gold to Lya to get the arrows and bolts. 100 gold for field rations for five people for two weeks. 96 gold for a dozen sunrods. 32 for three climbing kits. Let's budget 50 or 60 for Rho's crossbow, depending on whether we can find one of the new models that he can use."

Eli nods, sensing the "superior wants these people out of his office" vibe. He counts out 32 gold in whatever mix of gold and silver Lya prefers, and hands it to her. He writes the order (240 arrows, 160 bolts) and the address of Constanz house. "You can have these delivered to this address, or direct to the Salt Wench, whichever is easier. Just let me know if you need more funds to equip."

He does similar for Rho, giving him 60 gold to get his crossbow. "Get something that works good against spiders. The address is where I can be reached, if you need more funds before we embark."

The trip to the quartermaster isn't a long one, but by the time you reach your destination, the weight of the chest has your legs and arms burning with the effort. You pause for a moment outside the entryway to the quartermasters hall and catch snippets of conversation. You peek through the doorway, and see numerous crates bearing the sigil of your father, the Constanz Consortium factor.

"You'd think with the bastards own git working for us he'd cut us a deal," says one voice.

Rho walked ponderously through the market, making his way toward the crafters' stalls. His journey was painful and he was wracked with alternating bouts of nausea, dizziness and lethargy. Depending on which affliction was impeding his acquisition at any particular time he could be found retching in between stalls or stumbling through the street or leaning against one of the stalls just long enough to be chased off by the proprietor.

He arrived at an arms vendor, one of the few who had any weapons that weren't already bought up by the commander's quartermasters, and began to browse the goods available. He quickly spied a worn but reliable looking crossbow hanging from a hook at the back of the stall and made to pick it up. Below the crossbow, carelessly tossed on the floor, was a single bladed battleaxe. It looked in disrepair, with multiple nicks along the blade. Fully half of the leather wrapped haft was covered in a brown stain that was evidently dried blood.

"Hey!" Rho rasped through a still parched throat at the shopkeep, not waiting for him to finish his conversation with another patron. "What kind of shop are you running?" He tossed the axe and the crossbow on the counter and said, "These weapons aren't nearly fine enough for the citizens of Underdeep to defend themselves from the coming troubles, and your selling them right alongside good weapons." He spat bile onto the floor and turned a shade of green. "You let me have them both or I'll report you to Commander Graeme for gouging and misleading the good people of this city!" The color of his skin changed to a sallow color again and Rho leaned very hard on the counter to try and stop the stall from spinning.
