The subway close to me is great and I love it. Everything's reasonably tasty, they're generous with toppings, and it's cheap. The Mcdonald's (which I work at) is shit from a butt, solely because it's sop there to not throw meat away once its time is past. I've seen patties sit in the cabinet for hours and just congeal. it's nasty.
Does Steak N' Shake count? There's one a block away from my house and it's where I almost always go if I get the munchies. Their burgers are pretty ace.
Shit, I too did a horrible stint at the big Mc, where I learned that if you don't want shit food, then you better be there at the middle/end of rush, or baring that you must ask for "Fresh Meat" and "Fresh Fries". Company policy requires that all your shit be made fresh when you use those two phrases.
Also, If you like you have more than a 12 ozs of liquid in your 21 oz cup then you must request light ice, because standard company practices force employees to use so much ice that a 32 oz drink can't hold even 20 ozs of product. Don't let them fuck you on their highest profit item, people.

I know, it's ridiculous. I always order "no ice." The drinks come out cold from the tap anyway, and there's less condensation and less watering down of the drink.

Most of the fast food places around me just give you the cup and you fill it up.
A couple of them have those new Coke machines, which are a delight.

Totes.
Also @Atomic Ross and everyone else -> the BEST burgers and fries in the world, hands down, are the Truffle Butter Fries or Duck Fat Fried Fries, and the Kobe Burger from The Burger Stand which operates out of a bar called the Casbah at 803 Massachusetts st. in Lawrence, Kansas.
I promise you cannot get better food under $15 a person anywhere and they make corn dogs from scratch (amazing!!). I will take anyone there who can come down when I'm back in town, though I can't do anything but get you there and only if you are in the KC/Lawrence area. I promise it is worth looking up if you are anywhere near the home of KU.
The second best burger shop in Lawrence is Local Burger, where the Elk Burger is fucking amazing!!

Yeah.
However, not really the case at the drive-thru. I never eat in at fast food places, because I can't stand to watch people's souls getting crushed by tedious, shitty work for terrible pay with an extra large side of customer and manager cruelty/ass-hattery.
Seriously peeps, you must come visit sometime because L-town has incredible food, which also includes one of the United States top ten artisan bakeries: Wheatfields. I promise that if any of you come down you will be in danger of not being able to leave!!
One of the best fast food places I've eaten at is a place in DC called Merzi. It's like an Indian Chipotle (you pick naan, rice, chaat, or salad, then you pick a protein, et cetera), It was delicious.

You just made me insatiably hungry. Also, this is a great idea for a fast food restaurant.
Delta Assault's story of the hot wings makes me think of a couple weeks back when I ordered out from WingStop. I had previously had the Original Hot flavour and just didn't think it was hot enough, so I ended up ordering the Atomic ones. Big mistake. I normally handle spicy pretty well, but I could barely get through it... I did, but barely.

You know it's possible to walk into the fast food place, order and receive food, and then leave and eat it in your car where you'd be if you did the drive-thru? Takes like, 3 extra minutes. Drink customization abounds, and for that brief time it's not difficult to avert your eyes from the filthy plebians.
Come on @KalTorak, they are not plebs I fear and despise ... or wait ... was that sarcasm?
I have worked at plenty of fast food shops myself and I simply remember their pain much too well to even consider walking in.
And that three minutes is usually worth it for me, because when I get fast food I'm trying to use as little time eating as possible on lunch break so I can get other stuff done.

we have BurgerFuel down here. which I guess is alright, but I'm not a big fast food type person. But honestly, the choices at our shopping centers are amazing.
Some sort of Sushi place that will also do other things
A donburi place
Chinese takeaway and noodle bar
Indian food (naan, rice, and your choice of topping/curry)
Turkish kebabs
Roasts (meat, veggie, starch)
Nando's (chicken wing things?)
Oporto (its kinda like a chik-fil-a? mostly sandwiches)
Seriously the indian food place is fantastic. for about $12NZD you get a huge piece of naan, half a plate of rice, and a bowl of your choice. I usually go either butter chicken or chicken korma.
If I were to think about mall food back in the states I would have to say Sbarro. I used to love getting their baked ziti with a meatball.

This thread is the evil nemesis to the weight loss one. Seriously people, if you're drinking 32oz of any liquid available in that quantity at a fast food place, apart from water, you have a more serious problem than how much ice is in the cup.

I agree and that's why I stick to Coke Zero (I also like the flavor more than that of regular corn...Coke). If I end up where they don't carry Zero then I just get diet coke, but I really like that Chipotle carries coke zero.

Unsweetened iced tea. Plenty of fast food places have it, and only Burger King's is terrible. No issues for weight loss, and I get my caffeine when needed.

I'm not a huge fan of Mall food courts, but sometimes a man has to eat. However in the malls I've been around in London very few have proper food courts and usually then, only the new ones. I work near a large complex that is one of the biggest in South East England and it has four near identical cafes and a Subway scattered around several hundred shops.

As far as Mexican Food goes, I feel sorry for all you poor guys who have never had Cafe Rio. 10 Million times better than Chipotle.
The nearest Whataburger is...40 or so miles away, past Norcross, from where I live.
Nonetheless, next time I'm in that area, I want to try it out. I've heard nothing but praise about the place. Need to find out what the fuss is about.
I don't want to oversell the place. It's just good and fresh, the latter being their big thing.
Unless you're there for breakfast, your best bet is ordering a double whataburger with cheese, a side of onion rings or fries with gravy, and a chocolate shake.
Considering that's about 2200 calories, you might skip the next few meals after that. And jesus are their shakes thick. If you are there for breakfast, the absolute best thing is the honey butter chicken biscuit.

Anyone have any recommendations for strange self-made fast food combinations? By that I mean things like the infamous "McGangBang" (I really hate that name), which consists of putting a McChicken Sandwich (bun and all) in between two Double Cheeseburgers (buns and all). You have to assemble this yourself, but is it ever tasty.
Also, they put some weird things on the tray mats at Burger Kings in Germany...
I get significantly better quality food, and a better food mass to dollars ratio, at any local Chinese takeout place than any chain fast food.
That said.
Checkers is pretty decent. Their burgers are mediocre just like every other chain but the fries are excellent and the milkshakes are pretty good too. Usually I'll just get those two and skip the burger. The "drive-through-only" aesthetic appealed to me until I started riding a motorcycle and now it's just a pain in the ass.
There are some people here who think Five Guys is better than In-N-Out Burger and I think that is utter silly goosery. First off, while price doesn't really affect taste, Five Guys is expensive. A burger is $6.99 with nothing else. Just the burger and condiments (admittedly prepared any way you like, which is a service I enjoy). A double-pattied burger is $8.99. I can go to Applebees and get a cheaper burger. Probably not one as good, but still. I think $9 is reaching beyond normal fast food pricing. Then you add on fries and a drink and you're looking at a $15 meal.
...
For instance, Popeye's versus KFC. KFC isn't bad, but it's also not good. Popeye's is much better. I'm not too familiar with other chicken-related fast food places, but in the East, these are the big two I am familiar with. Popeye's makes the perfect butter-drenched biscuits which just taste amazing and also fatty but you are distracted by the amazingness of it.
Once you're into those price ranges, you might as well go to a restaurant. Islands Burgers is better than In-N-Out, and you can call-ahead for carry out, but they're restaurant prices. Once you clear 10 dollars a meal, you open yourself to all sorts of competition from local stores.
Case in point: KFC. We have an amazing restaurant that does pick-up near my house that sells 4pc Wing, Breast, Thigh, and Drumstick for 7.50. That comes with home made cornbread and two heaping portions of sides. Aside from the fact that it's so delicious to die for, and the chicken pieces are roughly twice as large as at KFC (and made fresh), it's cheaper. KFC charges 6.50 for the same cuts of chicken, with no sides and no cornbread. Upping it to a combo meal takes you to the 10 dollar range. Also, if you decide you want to sit inside, you're treated to a local place people actually want to hang out at, musicians on the weekends, and respectful high class clientele. Versus, you know, KFC where they have to put the fluorescent lights on ultra-brite to keep away the meth heads.
A) if this fried chicken place is in NYC, where is it?
Corner Bistro makes a great burger, as do BareBurger and Island Burger and Five Napkin Burger, and of course for chains: Shake Shack! I've yet to try the le parker meridian burger or the peter luger burger. those are next on my list. After that.. NY style Pizza.
C) Chipolte is overrated (at least the NYC and DC ones I've been to) and Taco Bell is underrated. Chipolte is almost trying to be real mexican food, at which point I'd rather go to a hole in the wall place and get authentic shit. Taco Bell embraces, nay, wallows in its cheapo fast food low quality nature. their chalupas? or the (much mourned) quad steak burrito? delicious. sure you pay the price the next day, but you cant have cheap and delicious without a drawback (see: street meat).

Church's Fried Chicken, for the money, is the best value. Their specials are impossible. I can routinely buy a 8-piece with biscuits for $5, or a 3-piece for $2. And their chicken is ginormous- it has to be full of crazy hormones or something. It's not as flavorful as Popeye's, but it's juicier and better cooked.
And their biscuits are amazing.

Ordering online "Fast food". Two of the places I order from, D'Angelos and Papa Ginos, let you order online and pick up later. As does Dominos and I believe Five Guys. This is the best way to order this stuff. You get to put your options in exactly as you want, pay for it online and pick it up later.
