The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Serial works of art such as Firefly, Arrested Development, Mystery Science Theater 3000, and The People's Court are called television shows. The word "tele" means "far" in Greek - television means "far vision"!
Let's talk about old TV shows that we are watching. Or new ones!
"Yes but can I discuss free web series here instead?" No! Haha just kidding, I don't see why not! It's basically the same thing except not funded by large corporations!
I look forward to the day when streaming content replaces the traditional TV but why is it so expensive? Netflix paid $100 million for the rights to stream Mad Men, for example. That's a million dollars an episode!
I can't watch TV anymore. Commercials just make me want to vomit. The only way I can see TV shows now is on DVD when they release a season. We're currently slogging through the sex morass that is True Blood.

If you have DVR you can just skip commercials, you know that right?

And True Blood is fantastic.
I do not have DVR. I have almost zero interest in TV shows anyway, I've no use for it.
True Blood is okay. But seriously, way too much sex. It's getting a little ridiculous.
Hey, so Home Movies is on Netflix now. Home Movies is a show that is created in HI DEF! Just kidding. It is squiggly and looks like a turd on your screen. This only helps to improve the comedy and make you focus on the great dialogue.
Features Brendan Small and H Jon Benjamin.

While the "phone" in telephone may rightfully cite ancient origins, I think vision is just vision. Despite that word having its own origins.

I just bought the first season of The Sopranos on DVD for $20. It's a show I've been meaning to watch forever and I'm glad I'm finally getting around to it.

Been watching L&O: Criminal Intent, trying to catch up and I'm up to season 7. Lots of character episodes, which is really nice. I prefer series to have longer story arcs rather than the one offs that is the L&O template and this is very appealing.
Been catching the odd Dr. Who episode as well. Cheesy as hell and the dialogue is sometimes painfully bad, but there's just something about the show that is fun to watch. I kinda miss the actor that played Dr. Who in the first season, though.

Oh man are we allowed to plug our favorite shows here?
If so, everyone should be watching Doctor Who with Matt Smith. Season 5 is (mostly) great and on Netflix Instant Watch, and doesn't require knowledge of the past 4 seasons to get into.

SOLD.
Speaking of H Jon Benjamin, everyone with Netflix owes it to themselves to watch the first season of 'Archer' on Instant. If you've already seen it, no harm in watching it again.
I mean, what else do you want? What else do you need?
I'm almost through watching it. I find the acting, dialogue, and animation lackluster and the plots mixed but still enjoy it. My favorite moment was from their Age of Apocalypse episodes, because it was almost certainly added in at the last minute by a standards & practices type department:
Master Mold sends Fitzroy back in time to kill Xavier. Fitzroy is required to drain life essence in order to fuel his power, so he tells MM "You know what I need." MM has a victim brought out and Fitzroy drains him to unconsciousness. I'm guessing that is where the scene originally ended.
After he falls down, Fitzroy comments "He'll be all right in a few days." Master Mold responds with a perfectly dispassionate "whatever" right as it cuts to commercial.

Eureka has both Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day in it at the moment, every episode since they came back for the rest of the season has been pure gold.

I love Burn Notice, White Collar, and Leverage. Caper shows. They make me wish the U.S. would go with the 50ish minute episode lengths the rest of the world uses, because I need 8 more minutes of Westen, Cafferty, and Spencer every week.
Also because we get cut down versions of British Top Gear, and terrible U.S. Top Gear.
I am a huge, huge fan of television series. And the longer the story arcs, the more the show refers to minor shit from before, the better. I tend to binge on Netflix and have in the last year gone through (for the first time) Buffy, Angel, Doll House, Psych, and am currently working on X-Files (love me my Netflix). I've in the past also done this for Fraiser and Gilmore Girls. TV
Give me hundreds of hours of development and story any day (month) of the week (year).

Quoted for Psych ... Great show, although it does tend to get a bit formulaic at times, but the whole character dynamics and pop culture references always make it greatviewing
(Um. Also quoted for Gilmore Girls, which I think was excellently written, and great character development, but which I will never admit to watching. Also, I've always liked the theme song. Um. Yes)
Edit : Thought'd flag Stargate SG-1. Not only a great sci-fi show, but lots of back references, which I always appreciated. Helped with the world building and establishing a show mythology. Got a bit lackluster in the last couple of seasons when MacGyver moved on though.
30 minutes of commercials to 30 minutes of show is not so good. You probably read this and wondered why I didn't just skip past commercials. I do watch it with on-demand, but it's very glitchy. It ends up 10-20 seconds after where I press the play button during a fast forward operation. That gets irritating very quickly. I'll watch this last episode after it airs on Sunday, but I might not be around for season 2.
Somehow SciFi Channel's commercials never bothered me, but they were probably more relevant to my interests. TNT played the same three ads over and over: a car, some crime drama, some medical drama.
Falling Skies wants to be The Walking Dead but it just isn't.
Speaking of, The Walking Dead is an awesome zombie apocalypse show on AMC. If you know anything about AMC's current record with great shows, you know that this show features excellent writing, good actors, and good effects.
Except for that goddamn building exploding. That looked terrible and didn't make sense. One screw up, I can forgive.
Really top notch show. It is coming back in October.

The well-known actor did it!
Psych has had two bad episodes in 5 seasons and regularly has me near crying from laughing so hard. If you blink you'll miss 5 jokes and it regularly self-references itself back to several episodes and/or seasons before (Bruton Gaster, Chad). The theme episodes are regularly fantastic. It's not my favorite show, but it's pretty high up there.

Also, is it just me or does USA have the greatest formula for shows ever?
He/she's an [OCCUPATION], but he/she's not a normal [OCCUPATION]. He/she used to be at the top of his/her field until something tragic or unexpected happened. Now he/she's poor and disreputable, working his/her way back up the ladder in a trendy vacation spot as an unorthodox or street [OCCUPATION], along with a small crew of wisecracking side-kicks and enough pop-culture references to choke a horse. It's called [OCCUPATION PUN] and it airs [EVERY NIGHT FOREVER] on USA Network! Characters [GREETING].
Television is a combination of Latin and Greek roots.
I don't know how I feel about this.

Invented by a Frenchman as well.
Catholic as hell.
...I'll grab my coat.
EDIT: Actually, a German, but from East Prussia, which I believe was predominantly Catholic at the time (it would become Poland later). So....still works.

There have been several sign gags that I've had to freeze frame to read. I'm talking entire flyers being revealed under another piece of paper that only exists in two frames. So, so good.
I don't know how we ever did without Netflix. So much to watch, so little time.
They have lots of episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, including the first five episodes ever broadcast on national TV.
I'm also trying to recapture a lot of my childhood- mostly through a lot of old Pink Panther cartoons- the classics, not the modern stuff. Plus Mancini's theme is still classy as all hell.
Let's see... I'll have to duck through my recently played list to see what else is there. Back in a bit.

There are three seasons of it on DVD and Blu Ray. I recommend the Blu Ray.
Start from the beginning. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Just tore through Kolchak the Nightstalker a bit back, it's like a cheesy 70's X-Files and I found it to be good fun.
Currently watching Mad Men and Joseph Campbell's Mythos miniseries both of which are awesome as well.
Outside of Netflix I'll add a +1 the Breaking Bad recommendations. Easily my favorite currently running show.
In the end I think it's because we both have crushes on Nathan Fillion.
But the show is pretty damn funny.
Currently on Netflix streaming I am splitting my time between MacGyver, Star Trek (TOS), The Dead Zone, and a few animated shows.
