Flying overseas and I want to take my 24" LCD with me.

Hi all,

I am flying to Turkey on Thursday and I want to take my 24" LCD with me. I brought my 21" LCD with me from Turkey to the U.S. 2 years ago but this one is bigger by 3" and I am kinda scared given that I paid nearly $900 for this thing a few months back.

Here's what I did so far:

1. Took the stand off the monitor.
2. Wrapped the monitor with the plastic it originally came in.
3. Wrapped the monitor with a blanket.
4. Placed it in the middle of my luggage.
5. Put lots of other clothes around it.

- 6. Don't know what other precautions I can take? This is a luggage so putting Fragile labels on it would look stupid? Maybe I can put "PLEASE HANDLE WITH CARE" labels but that's about it? Uh?

Any advice?

Thanks.

I don't think anyone at luggage bothers reading stuff written on cases. I assume you're going to put the screen in a hard-cover (is that the correct word? @.@) suitcase?

Baggage handlers don't give a shit about your luggage—they're union labor. If I were you I'd take it to a packing store, have them pack it up safely, and then ship it over.

Yeah, thats what I am doing. I cannot ship it cause they'll charge me customs even though its my own monitor.

How many other bags are you checking?

Box it well in a box that doesn't say what it is with your name and a contact number on it and check it.

Plus, they'll probably be charging you taxes on bits of monitor...

Make sure you get a really solid suitcase and pad it properly, I've got about half a dozen (full) bottles of vodka back fine before. Clothes make good duel-purpose padding. Bubble wrap? You'll probably want to make sure you can take it out easily though in case they decide to examine it in security...

I walk past baggage handlers every day on my way to work. They don't give a shit less about anything. I cant begin to tell you the times i have just seen them sling shit from the bag belt to the cart on the tug 5ft away.

I would honestly would attempt to take it on the plane with you.

Also, if you check your monitor in your bag, the EDS screening machines might flag it and you might end up causing a scene at the counter after you leave. You wouldn't get in trouble or anything, but you will probilly have bomb techs and K9 sniffing your bag for explosives.

I mean, just yesterday, we had this happen. 250ft around the EDS machine in all directions were evacuated for almost a hour till the situation resolved.

    Thanks for your words fellas.

Well, I took the LCD out of the luggage, put some peanuts in its plastic wrap, then put it back in a blanket, then another blanket and placed it in the middle of my hardcase Samsonite luggage. I think this should do it. It took me 20 minutes to close the luggage, so I am going to a Brookstone tomorrow to buy some of those luggage straps that hold the luggage tight.

And this luggage is pretty heavy, around 80 lbs I would say, so I think I'll be ok. I don't think they'll be able to throw an 80 lbs. luggage like they are used to. I am flying business on Turkish airlines so I will have to pay around $20 for excess weight fee (32 kg (~70 lbs) is the limit on Turkish Airlines).

I'll let you all know what happens by the time I reach home on Friday =P

    Thanks again.
