So, this is what happens when you realize bot games just aren't cutting it anymore. Outside of 2 kills, me and Simpsons got the entirety of kills that match.

I have a question that I haven't been able to find easily searching around. What are the reasons and decision making that goes into what lanes a character should take as according to the guides floating around? Some specify top or bottom when they seem pretty samey to me. Also, why is mid the lane to solo all the time?

Mid is always the solo lane because it is the safest by virtue of having the least distance to close should you need to run back to your turret. Top is always the solo if you have a jungler (which you will almost always have once you hit 30) because having 2 people bottom gives you better control over dragon. As for what character archetypes should take which lane, that is always going to come down to the current metagame. Right now, it's support+ad ranged carry bot, ap mid, and a bruiser or second ap solo top with some kind of initiator probably stuck in the jungle depending on team composition. When I first started it was ap solo top, ranged ad solo mid, and whoever else you had was stuck bottom with virtually anyone jungling.
Mid lane is consistently the solo because the brush placement there means it is generally harder to gank, therefore you can extend and farm without as much danger. This leads people to put characters there that do well with farm and a level advantage, usually an AP carry, as they generally have an escape to survive the occasional gank by a jungler.
Bottom lane is consistently two people, because it allows easier support for the jungler when he goes to take dragon, or better ganks when the opposing jungler tries to take it.
Top lane is the second solo if you have a jungler, or the second duo of not. Characters that are generally said to be "top-lane" champions are either good with a level advantage, to take advantage of the enemy duo lane, or can farm easily with a solo lane, and durable enough to survive a 2v1 gank.

solo lane vs duo lane
a solo laner is in a much riskier position. you have to put characters that can hold their own into solo lanes. these characters often have sustainability, range, good harrassment, and/or scale very well with gold. There is a set rate of possible gold that can be earned in a lane and it's important to maximize your team's gold efficiency
Duo laners are where you put characters that have some, but not enough of these features. A popular duo lane as of last patch was Soraka and Ashe. Soraka is sustainability, Ashe is range and scaling with gold. Together they were too good! Soraka has been nerfed.
Bottom lane is almost always where the duo lane is. the reason for this is the dragon. in the event of a fight over dragon, you want as many teammates as possible to be nearby! you can have a 4v4 at dragon if both jun glers, mids, and bottom laners headed there
Top lane and mid lane are therefore solo lanes. Mid is shorter in actual length between the two mid turrets, so characters who are slightly weaker go mid. Another option is to put someone highly mobile in mid lane so that they can gank.
Top lane is basically where you put your strongest early game character in the categories of sustainability, harrassing, farming capability, and resilience. Losing top lane can be very hard to recover from, so you want to stack the odds in your favor by putting say, irelia there
Man all the fighting game guys up in LoL now. Top and bottom are mostly the same. The main reason that you send a solo to top is because of dragon being closer to bottom lane so extra lane help can make for speedy dragon clears.

I think this just recently came up in the thread a few days ago. Mid is solo for a couple of reasons, simplest being that it's a safer lane to solo, and the fastest trip back from buying, tradition also factors into it. If you don't have a jungler, top and bot lanes are interchangeable in my opinion. If you do have a jungler, the top lane will be a solo, while bot lane will be two, usually with a support character or the tank pairing up with a carry. Which is when you see people spec'ing top or bot lane, they're referencing the high level play concept of both teams having a jungler.
.55 reduction to the ratio on Nid's heal.
holy shit. I mean yeah, it needed a nerf - but down to .7?
Not really sure what her role on a team would be anymore... she no longer has enough sustain to solo top effectively.
the pounce change is intriguing, but stupid from a balance standpoint. basically all it means is that you need blue at all times even more than you already did. With blue you are even better at chasing/escaping than you were before -> without it Nid's kiting ability (which is her whole niche as a character) no longer exists at all.

Well just played the new Nidalee after falling in love again with old nidalee.
Shit sucks. Not having pounce on 2 seconds makes escaping awful and it means you have to sacrifice AP for CDR. Cougar form still seems squishy enough to get devoured by most other champs. Without a good heal in late game your ability to escape is nerfed significantly.
The CDR on spears is nice but it's such an incredibly dependent skillshot that I don't feel it makes up for what she lost.
Bah maybe there's some crazy hybrid build that can take advantage of the cougar form changes.

Oh no. I didn't realize it but LoL took the place of street fightin' for me
I am not proud to say i have spent only 85 dollars on this game, I thought it would be more. 85 is a pretty solid number for the amount of hours I've gotten out of it. Never again though, my wallet is sealed.
also, man talon is sexy, crazy good laning phase, ult cooldown is stupid low. don't even need to build super ad to do good damage. Havne't enjoyed a champ that much since, forever. I see some nerfs coming though, if only on his cooldowns.
He is pretty squishy though, and has no escapes other than his ult, so after it pops you get focused fast....
"If a cherry pie filled cape is wrong, I don't want to be right.
I'm dead serious."
How are people building Talon? I am running my Vayne runes/masteries and it seems to be pretty solid.(still no kills in 2 games but both were surrender at 20 games.)
Protip: Talon Skarner might be the worst possible lane in the game vs 2 heavies.
I would think that ghostblade, mallet for permapassive, and whatever AD you desire would be just fine

Thanks for all the fast responses. That makes sense, I was just wondering if there was something asymmetrical I wasn't noticing in the lanes (and it turns out it's the dragon). And thanks for all the feedback into which heroes I should pursue, I'm definitely leaning towards Irelia now, maybe scooping up Annie since she's so cheap.

the boost to Swipe ratio is deeecent... it actually counts as a buff to itself and to takedown.
at this point I'm sort of thinking the way to go might be to rush Revolver->wota->revolver. Max distance spears will be healing you for almost as much as E, now... =/

Now going on 6 days with no support response -_-
I like the new end game scoreboard. Mainly the fact the fixed only showing 4 names on the right side that bugged me for SO long. Its the little things.
I really want to uninstall now. Second game of the night, everyone is doing great. 30 mins in and teamfights happen, and we notice our akali is int he side lane, farming, constantly. Not in any fight, farming, and just picking off the odd person who is low and happens to be near her.
We lost it after 50 mins, just because that one fucking guy was essentially just playing a farm game. I don't think I've been this angry in a long time, and it's one of the few things that get me riled up. I get it if you play badly and lose, but what really pisses me off is when you refuse to speak to your team, and you actually sabotage everyone else by being a dickmuppet. God damn.
eh, I want to play one game tonight where talon isn't instalocked
I called a guy on it and he proceeded to be a dick the whole game...especially when things went south and he and everyone else on the team was feeding.
"oh, it's the patch, the patch screwed everything up the patch is gay"

I don't know, an Akali free farming in the side lane for an extended period of time probably isn't a bad thing, especially if she's split pushing the lane and bringing in kills. Now if you're getting dusted in team fights and need her around for the deeps, well that's another story.
