On Canadian Ebay, priced in Australian dollars, shipping from India? Also, using a private auction listing.
Doesn't seem to be very legit to me.
It's on canadian ebay because i am from Canada. Also why would he offer to ship a physical item if it wasnt legit? With a tracking number, no less? and 100% positive feedback with over a 100 items sold? If it isn't legit, I can always reverse the charge through paypal, nothing lost. Paypal has never failed me in the past. Worth the risk to me for that cheap. I got him to send me the code and not bother with the shipping, he said sure no problem, paid $16.55.
So am I a terrible person for not wanting to fulfill the SteamGift I offered?
The guy who won it has a private steam profile, a russian e-mail, has entered 500+ contests and won 7, commented on none, and hasn't made a single giveaway himself.
I'll be sending it to him, but man, I am instantly burnt out on Steamgifts. It looks like everyone is there for a free lunch and the points system is designed to perpetuate that. People who make contests don't get points, instead, everyone else gets a percentage of the contest value. That seems ass-backwards to me. People who give away games should be rewarded with extra points.
I thought that website would be a tighter knit community for people who want to share games with each other. Instead it is just a lottery for freeloaders. Screw that, I won't be doing another giveaway.
Yeah, I mean, what were you expecting really? I haven't bothered signing up for Steamgifts because I don't really need more vidyagamez but if I did, I'd limit it to PA people because why would I care about random Internet people?
I signed up for it because honestly even a 1 in 2000 chance of getting skyrim for free is worth it but I never expected a fantastic community out of it.
There is a decent community there, but it's exploded from like 15 to 25k in the past few weeks, and is getting a bit unwieldy. Generally a lot of people there make private giveaways for people on the forums or that participate in the chat. But yeah, the recent Skyrim with 5000+ entries went to someone with a wopping 1 comment.
I generally don't even bother commenting on Steamgifts unless it's a private giveaway. If on the crazy chance I end up winning something, then definitely.

Every giveaway I've entered on Steamgifts I've been sure to leave a nice comment thanking the guy for setting up the giveaway. It takes like two seconds and it is nice of the person.

There was a huge issue with this in the past, people buying cheap keys from places like Russia and India, and reselling them in the west, causing valve to blocking access to the game/whole account for the people who did it?

I've always considered that to be post-padding albeit very polite post-padding. I'd much rather prefer something like the Awesome button and leave comments for real information.
Just in passing, for other UK posters in the thread; Play.com have the (Steamworks) Collectors Edition of Dawn of War 2: Retribution available, for the seemingly ridiculous price of £7.99 - I've picked up a copy, but I wouldn't expect it to last long.

What kind of real information could I post about a raffle I entered?
It seems to me that's the purpose of comments on the giveaways.

I assume that Steamgifts was created around the idea of sharing games and then the community (as it is) formed around that. The PA Steam group and this thread has grown out of luv for the Newell primarily and the whole gifting thing is a nice side effect, but not the main purpose of the group or the thread. If I understand you correctly, then the guy who won your giveaway isn't really doing anything wrong. He's just following the existing rules. If you wanted to restrict it to a smaller group of people that you "know", then you might as well keep it in this thread?
Personally, for me, I like the community we've created here in our own little forum. Sure it gets a bit unruly at times. People pop in just during sales. But it's sorta small, and I like it. I have a handful of friends I game with and normally all my free games goes to them, but if I have an extra, I'd rather just pass it on to a fellow PA forumite here doing some silly contest. Just my opinion. Not that I don't think that steamgifts doesn't have merit, I choose not to use it.
Is anyone else having issues with the store? None of the textures or images are loading and it's making it look kinda.. Broken. Same with the browser store too.

I like Steamgifts because it's a lottery for freeloaders. We live paycheck to paycheck so I can't really buy games all that often. I have to start saving now for releases in November, and have to choose between Saints Row 3 and Skyrim. I get like 2 new games a year, tops. If I have a chance to win something like that, I think it's incredibly awesome. I'm also extremely grateful for the many gifts I've received from this thread.
I do agree that there's not much incentive for a community there. I think it'd be pretty awesome for private giveaways if the person giving away the game could remove entries for random people that click a link in this thread, instead of "first person to PM me gets it". Otherwise, just do a contest or something here.

I'm going to be totally honest here.
I haven't made a single comment on Steamgifts, so if I win anything, I'd be "that guy"
But when it comes down to it I'm not super interested in getting really involved with another community, since I have trouble enough keeping up with this one as is.

Everything looks fine for me from both the client and a browser (Opera).
Are you seeing the same thing after logging out and then back in?
Steamgifts is cool since we can't really do contest any more. And people really should treat it more as a raffle than a "oh this guy is awesome give him stuff". I just wish I had the spare cash to throw some stuff up on there/around here more often.

Well, we absolutely can do contests, just rather than flooding the thread with entries, we keep entries limited to PMs and maybe have a single post to show off the winners or something.
Unless there has been some ruling from on high that I missed.
I had no idea what to expect. The "invite only" aspect led me to believe it was a more regulated site, like a private torrent tracker. If I had to rebuild Steamgames I would do points as follows:
Daily Income = [1 + (2 Points X #Successful Gift Recipients)] / (1 Point + # Gifts Received)
English Translation: People who give games get more daily points. People who win a lot get less.
Desired Effect: People are encouraged to give away games, and only bid on games they actually want.
Points received for steam gifts = 25% of all entry points after successful gifting.
Desired Effect: People have a huge incentive to gift games, in addition, the more popular the game the more people will submit, and their return will be greater.
The above website would be pretty different than the one I experienced. Freeloading would happen, but it would be rarer. Instead, it would be a site where people trade games in lotteries and have a reason to donate.
I think the "people who want to give games" crowd needs to be courted more than the "people who want free games" crowd, otherwise we'll see infinite Humble Bundles and Dirt 3 scammers.

I have generated a few invites for no other reason than I have capped out on points a few times for lack of giveaways to enter
What I'm saying is that points accumulate absurdly fast and feel totally pointless at their intended job of preventing people from entering everything
Then again I'm a statistical outlier because I own almost everything on Steam already soooo maybe I'm not the best way to judge whether the system is working or not

No, I generally have quite the surplus as well. I'll have 80 points, spend them all before I go to bed, and wake up to find I have another 80-120 or so. If I only entered giveaways for games I really wanted, then I would be sitting on 300 for days. As it is, I enter public giveaways if the game is something I have even the slightest interest in because I don't want to be sitting on points. I have them, why not use them? I use more discretion for the PA ones, of course.
And to whoever mentioned comment-padding, that's pretty much my reason as well.

That means no points, though. Dang.
It's working fine here.
