I'm looking for a good straightforward action game to play on the PC right now. I don't want a first person shooter, I don't want an RPG, and I don't want a strategy game. I'm not in the mood for an adventure game like Cave Story. I don't want much if any level building, so nothing like Diablo. Right now I just want some good old-fashioned level-based 3rd person action.
And I'm drawing a blank.
I'm looking for something like God Hand or Devil May Cry 3 or Bayonetta or Viewtiful Joe for the PC. I'm happy with commercial stuff, indie stuff, or freeware. I have a controller I can plug in and it's a plus if the game can use that. The only things I've played that I think come remotely close to what I'm looking for are Spelunky and Iji. Any ideas? edit: It would also be good if the combat system is at least somewhat deep, like the games I mentioned.
Have you ever played Darksiders? It's a pretty cool game. Its combat system is not as complex as Devil May Cry, but it makes up for it by having Zelda-like dungeons.
EDIT: I have been totally ninjaed. Alright, quick, find a way to make this post non-useless... What about Max Payne?
Darksiders and DMC4 are the closest I can think of to Bayonetta or DMC3. For something like Spelunky or Iji, possibly Terraria for the former and Bionic Commando: Rearmed for the latter.
Oh, Prototype is on sale at D2D right now. 2/3 off.
I always wanted to try this game. Worth $10?
Absolutely. Others might try to tell you otherwise, but it's actually one of my favorite games for just unwinding with for a couple of minutes. I bought it on release and I still play it occasionally if I just want to wreck shit.
So yeah, I recommend it. The story is kind of ridiculous (as is the way it's told in-game) and most of the characters are douchebags, but the gameplay itself is fast, brutal, and really fun.
Also, OP, you should probably get Just Cause 2. It's pretty dang cheap these days, I believe, and it's pure havoc in it's most explosive, mexican form. Another one of my favorites.
Splinter Cell Conviction is a stellar stealth-action game with awesome co-op and multiplayer, but in reality it's less like Metal Gear or previous Splinter Cells, and more like...well, I was going to say Arkham Asylum, but even more polished and story-driven than that, if it's possible.
Also a huge fan of Max Payne myself, so definitely check those two games out. I consider them two of the best examples of 3rd person action out there.
Agreed with recommendations for Just Cause 2. It never takes itself too seriously and is amazingly fun. Just tons of carnage, destruction, and some beautiful scenery.
I quite liked X-Blades, despite the terrible name, paper-thin plot and horribly pandering main character.
If you get Oni, you will need to hunt down a fix to make it work on modern PCs.
Oh, also Bloodrayne 1 & 2 are on PC and cheap from GoG. The sequel is the better of the two but the first isn't bad after you make it to the Big Twist.

I have a fix. I can probably put it on dropbox or something. Or email it. It's only 1.45 megs. It supposedly works on Win 7, but I only have Vista. Works perfectly here.
Also, once you beat Oni (or if you get bored of it), some of the cheats are fantastic fun.

Shapeshifter is my absolute favorite. Playing through the game as Muro or Barabas is fun fun fun.
I was watching the hell out of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II the other day, it's meta-critic score isn't so great, but after watching the whole thing in action, I can't see why. It looks very entertaining. Hell, I think I'll buy it.

I had a lot of fun with Alice : Madness Returns. Drags on a bit long but I found the combat to be mostly fun and the environments were all really beautiful.

This, so much. I cannot say enough good things about this game. Play it through in single player first, then if the need strikes you, find a partner and do the whole thing again in co-op, with completely different puzzles. I had so much fun with this game it was unreal.

Prototype
Edit: There is a PC version of DMC4 too, if you've not played that.

And if you've played Max Payne, then Max Payne 2. And if you've played them both, then play them again.

Upcoming Bastion might be up your alley but does have RPG elements.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Ka-Chung!
Ka-Chung!
Sure, it got mediocre reviews, but I thought it was a very fun RE4-ish shooter. The combat is especially satisfying.
Just Cause 2, absolutely.
Fuckin' Oni!
Some upgradeable abilities, but no leveling, no strategy, nothing but complete fucking chaos at all times
At least if you're doing it right

I'm not sure why it's doing that to the URL. Try cutting and pasting it.
Don't do it man.
It's only about 5 hours long.
About... a third of the game is talking
The number of bars went down, but RPG elements might still be unpleasant for the OP.
Why I fear the ocean.

But it's a pretty damn good five hours. It's not a new game, just Steam that sh*t!
(edit: or wait for a sale... Labor day is just around the corner...)
Team Fortress 2 Backpack: Someone you love
I played a ton of it, and I'll get the second one too. I thought it was really fun.
YMMV, but at the very least it has a fun combat system.
