So long story short I've noticed I have a lot of system processes running that aren't malware or spyware but are taking up a lot of cpu cycles, and I ran across this program: http://www.liutilities.com/products/campaigns/plib/sp/
I'm not sure if its bogus or not but I was wondering if there were any free alternatives (this only scans for free, it doesn't fix anything) that would "clean up" and optimize my system processes. Thanks for the help.
You can actually deactivate a lot of processes yourself without causing any harm to your system. As long as you make sure you don't permanently remove something important, you can always just use trial and error--end a useless-looking process and see if it makes your system stop working. If it doesn't, then just set it to never start again.
If you end a process that turns out to be a vital Windows component, you'll figure out pretty quickly that you should leave that one alone.

Do it properly, and do it yourself.
Use process library and go through each one one by one identifying which you need to leave and which you can kill.
I wouldnt trust some random 3rd party app to decide that for me.

With that and time you should be able to identify which system processes you want to be running.
Use msconfig to disable any things you don't want to run at startup.
