I got very bored of No More Heroes: loved the boss batttles, combat felt a little...janky to me at times, HATED the overworld, didn't really like the plot, didn't much like the crazy "dark side" (or whatever) moves, I'm not against 'crazy' it's just something about them didn't sit right with me.
This game, however, looks hysterical and a bit more polished than NMH. So, to get to the point, has anyone picked this up that disliked No More Heroes and thoroughly enjoyed it?
The combat is similarly not-great, but there's no overworld, and no "jobs" for you to do. Your job in this game is killing zombies. It has a much better sense of humor than No More Heroes, and oh yeah, the main character isn't a completely insufferable cunt.
I'd be scared to meet the person who instinctively identified (solely positively) with Travis. He's not meant to be likeable.
The combat's no Bayonetta or DMC, but it has a very different system of rewarding the player. Having to crowd-control the zombies you're bashing into clumps in order to execute seven at once with one, perfect thrust of your chainsaw - to be rewarded with glittering, rainbow-colored fireworks and a slow-mo view of the beaming smile on Juliet's face as Nick shouts "fuck you, and fuck yeah!" just ends up feeling really good.
I haven't played a brawler with mechanics that felt so - comfortably - removed from the standards in years. It's like the first time you played Dead Space and had to un-train your need to always go for the headshot. It's a twist that's such a twist, the gameplay ends up feeling comfortable and refreshing at once.
That said, it didn't feel that way for me on an initial playthrough. Only once I unlocked all of Juliet's moves did the game open up, and start feeling like what it is. Prior to that, I was only able to focus on what it isn't.

Glad I didn't let my dislike of No More Heroes put me off this game completely, I'm absolutely loving it. It's hilarious. My only real dislike is the camera is a bit wonky now and then. The dialogue is fantastic.
Just finished today, after getting the urge to play again. The bad ending is actually better than the good ending. I almost regret going through all that trouble to unlock it.

It's pretty fun. Kinda janky and unpolished in some ways, but fun.

I prefer Juliet's reactions, but it's awesome in general.
"You're like a kitten! A kitten who doesn't know Japanese!"
NICK: "You've killed sasquatches?"
JULIET: "Sure - sasquatches are total dicks."
It can't be overstated how large Tara Strong's contribution to this game is. Where's that gameplay vid... Here, click this and skip to 06:00.
JULIET: "I hate it when everyone turns into zombies... but it's also kinda' fun, 'cause I get to do stuff like jump on a fire truck!"
She just nails it.
