I assume each item will only be able to hold one enchantment. I wonder if we can overwrite it. If so, it looks a lot like WoW enchanting, which isn't a bad thing.
Diablo 3 does not send beta emails. The only way to know is to check your account. They say they do it that way to decrease the risk of phishing attempts.

When I got in, it was with a genuine beta email. I guess a lot of people aren't getting them though.
I got an email for the beta. The way you tell a legit email from a phishing attack is that the real one contains no activation link! They simply tell you to log into your battle.net account.
Question about the beta: If someone gives me a beta passkey but I don't have any Blizzard games, can I still play? I set up an account with battle.net, but no games. Do I get access to the beta?

I...don't actually know. Most people who get in get in through their B.net accounts, I have no idea how redeeming a beta key would work.
I think it would violate gambling laws if you were required to buy something to enter. So, you can have a battle.net account with no games and still get into the beta.

I do wonder though if having an active WoW account weights your chances, because everyone I know who's gotten a beta invite recently has had an active WoW account (me included). Completely anecdotal of course, just an observation. Could just be that most people who care about D3 have active WoW accounts too :P
Don't worry, it's still going to be at least a couple months before the game comes out. As long as you get an invite at least a week before beta ends, you'll have time to get tired of it.
Officially the unluckiest CCG player ever.

Alternatively, I wonder if the people who did that WoW year-subscription for the free mount and stuff are less likely to get the beta due to "Hey, you're already getting the full game for free, we're not wasting a beta slot on you."
Gah no beta for me yet. I just want to be able to play it for a weekend or so, just enough time to get an idea on how to game feels. I'm not asking for much!!

I got the beta invite the morning before leaving for 5 days to go to my in-laws house. Now that's pain.
But oh God, was it worth it. I love Diablo 3.
I got my beta invite the evening before I went on a two week vacation.
Hey I got an email now! Even though I'm already downloading the client. XD

In Diablo 2 it was a bit of a pain to upgrade gems for lower levels: you needed 81 chipped gems to get a perfect gem. Now there are 14 levels of gems, requiring 1.5 million chipped gems to get the highest level gem. I'm thinking it won't really be worthwhile to collect and upgrade gems when you can just hope for better ones to drop further on.
Profile -> Signature Settings -> Hide signatures always. Then you don't have to read this worthless text anymore.

but you can desocket them and keep them going, so you'll get use out of them immediately instead of waiting for a perfect gem.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get the installer without using the Blizzard downloader/installer thingy? Several of my housemates got it and it'd be nice to not have to download it 4 times.

For a time, 81 chipped gems were worth far more as chipped gems than as a perfect gem anyway. I forget what all cube recipes they were used in, but it was actually foolish to convert chipped gems to flawed. Now converting flawed on up made sense, but those chipped gems were actually worth something. I remember trading 40 chipped gems for an SoJ and feeling awesome for it.

Between that and the fact that gems will be on the AH, it won't be impossible to get a Radiant Star, just very expensive!
What is really going to be interesting is that the final four recipes to upgrade gems are drops only. The first few people with those recipes are going to be freaking rich.
Don't worry too much about getting a beta invite you can't use right away. The beta is just a small taste of the game. After going through as each character a few times, you've seen all there is to see. It just whets the appetite.
Yeah, I'm getting towards the end now and it feels like things were just starting to get interesting. Unlocked the blacksmith and made a solid set of magic items, including this huge 2 handed flamberge.
Definitely just even more depressed that the game isn't coming out for a while.
Is there any kind of nda or can we post screenshots and stuff?
There's certainly a hard wall in terms of character progression for the beta. There are still some fun things to do that are outside the norm of leveling up a character or two. There are enough random dungeons/areas that I still scour every area to see the more interesting ones. Jar of Souls is my favorite. You can also do things like collect MF gear, or bonus to experience gear and see how fast you can level a new character. Or pump up some other stat like precision and see what kinds of crits you can get. There are still skills I haven't even tried yet and I've played all classes at least twice. So yeah, it's limited but there's still lots of stuff to explore. If I could wish for one feature to explore in the beta it would be the runes.
Edit: The rarest random event I've seen is where some mage-like NPC is examining a book and throws you a couple of gold and tells you to go away. If you stick around, he conjures a skeleton or two and attacks you. His name was "Lloigor the Crazed". http://www.diablowiki.com/Lloigor_the_Crazed
beta get.... naturally while I am traveling for work and cannot play. Hurray for downloading it on the Hotel internet to work laptop, then gonna move it to gaming computer when I get home.

Diablo 3 beta is mine...
This...this is the first beta I haven't had to go to a friend's house to check it out.

Ah, my invite will show up the day before release at this rate. Congrats to all who got in, though.
And by 'congrats' I mean 'I hope you break every bone in both hands just as you complete the client install.'
As does envy, as it turns out.

Must get home to install!
