Big things are happening in PlayStation Home this fall. Sony has announced that an entirely new Home experience is currently in the works, one which it hopes will better cater to the needs of its users and offer a better experience overall. Home will relaunch with a new Hub and destinations based on desired gaming experience.
The new Hub "integrates games, quests, community events and user-generated content, while providing players with additional navigation, shopping, socialization and entertainment options." Essentially, it's the launch pad to anything else in Home. Within the Hub, players can go over to the Activity Board to check on quests or create their own events and share them with their friends. Users can also check out the Activity Board to quickly jump to games and content.
Outside of the Hub, there are four main areas: Action District, Sportswalk, Adventure District and Pier Park. As you can imagine, each caters to the needs of a certain gamer -- the Action and Adventure Districts both cater to hardcore and action-adventure fans, respectively, while Sportswalk is for sports nuts. Pier Park is an interactive theme park, replete with rides and games and such.
So... if this new Home is going to be all about games, then why muck around with the social interface at all? Why not just give people the games?
Because you can't sell useless shit if people aren't interacting with the environment.
Exactly. I get the feeling that Sony is trying too hard. Also, they're a bit late to the party. Sites like Habbo Hotel do similar things and have been around for much longer. You need critical mass for social spaces to really succeed, but my (obviously biased) opinion is that the folks that just want to hang out and chat are already elsewhere, or doing it on Facebook now.
I'm curious why Sony hasn't gone the route that MS is taking. We sell you Avatar stuff and then proceed to put your avatar in many different places and games (sort of like the Wii). As far as I know, the Home avatar is just limited to Home?
Ubisoft promises to remove its digital rights management protection from its PC version of From Dust via a patch.
The publisher posted a statement today apologizing for the confusion last week surrounding the game's online authentication, which was required at every start up. Consumers originally believed they only needed to register the game one time.
Below is the statement from Ubisoft in full:
We recognize that one of our posts in the From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear. We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding. Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication.
This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and who's progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally.
Once the patch is ready, players who already have the game will automatically receive the update on their next login and subsequent game sessions will be 100% offline.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Ubi frantically backpedal from some DRM before?
I think so, but I can't remember which release it was.
Also, it would also be nice if they patched From Dust into a GOOD port of the game, but I will not hold my breath. I'm so disappointed in it. It runs like shit. The DRM is (at least for me) the least of From Dust's problem.
I wonder if they added the DRM just so people would focus on complaining on the DRM and so they could yank it like they are doing. You know, to distract from the fact that it's a shit port.
PlayStation Home is something I will probably never be interested in. I think I'm even biased against wanting to be interested in it. I just want to play games. Not like dancing avatar bullshit games, but real PS3 games. Trying to distance the UI from a menu-based system in any way is laughable. I love my PS3, but I think Sony really just doesn't get the idea that smaller, more concise, easily navigable menus is what people want. Their UI actually punishes you the more stuff you purchase or sign up for. They need to hire someone who can actually design a proper menu system. And THEN worry about Home.
So... if this new Home is going to be all about games, then why muck around with the social interface at all? Why not just give people the games?
Because you can't sell useless shit if people aren't interacting with the environment.

You know, after what Santa said I was just thinking that this Home redesign is mainly so they can keep avatars around, but it hasn't occurred to them that it can be done without Home.

Yeah I don't mind my 360 Avatar. He sits there, Ilo and Milo wander around him now and again doing whatever they do. It's entirely unobtrusive and doesn't annoy me in any way, exactly how I like it.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, didn't Nintendo Miis (the little avatars for the Wii) come before the 360 Avatar patch?
In before someone gets angry about horse armour for your Avatar!
I'm a whore for that stuff.
Man, I was so disappointed to look at the 40,000 Space Marine stuff last night, and see there's no armour for your avatar. I would've bought that so hard.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

My Avatar was rocking a Scott Pilgrim bass for months.
I woke up the other week after a heavy night, turned on my 360 to see the pink elephants from Dumbo marching around my Avatar while he floated wide-eyed through the bubble-filled air.
This is an excellent use of my money.

Hello thiss is Brian Crecente. There are no need to asnwer any questions, we have already extrapolated all the relevant information from your respsonse into a powerful expose on the powerful expose on the bitterness and spite that is endemic within the halls at Redmond. Followed by bin that looks like Pikachu.
ME 2 was damn close to skating the line between what I consider an RPG and what I consider a third person shooter with leveling up. ME 1, clearly an RPG.
^^Ah, I see what you mean about it keeping old versions of your draft posts when you reply.
The slight difference between Just Dance and Guitar Hero is that Ubisoft isn't packing-in an expensive piece of plastic every goddamned time.
Also, people who liked it at the time bought all the DDR games.
It almost seems that they know their audience for these things so well as to know that DLC would not be an effective solution.
In agreement with this. My girlfriend purchased DDR every year for quite awhile because Konami was smart enough to release a standalone and +pad version of the game. Don't try to sell the extra plastic every year, the hardcore players will buy replacements anyways.
Looks like three and a half angry Kirbys. The other six seem happy.
I want to see reviews, but it looks cool!
Those happy Kirbys are just that way because they love swarming and beating an innocent creature to death. They don't want the Pikmin to have all the fun.
So, it looks like Keiji Inafune has started a juku up for people who want to work in the industry. There's no admission fee to the school, but you have to be willing to do a free internship.

We are excited to announce that PlayStation has partnered with DIRECTV to bring its popular sports subscription service, NFL SUNDAY TICKET, to the PlayStation 3 game console. PlayStation owners across the country will now have the opportunity to watch every out-of-market Sunday game on their PS3.
How do you get in the game? At the start of the season, viewers who do not currently have access to DIRECTV will be able to subscribe to NFL SUNDAY TICKET at the season price of $339.95. Existing DIRECTV customers who already have NFL SUNDAY TICKET and NFL SUNDAY TICKET To-Go through DIRECTV can access the service on their PS3 for no additional charge.
NFL SUNDAY TICKET is a DIRECTV-exclusive sports package that offers:
Up to 14 NFL games every Sunday
Full HD for every football game
DIRECTV’s Red Zone Channel
We know that PlayStation fans are huge sports enthusiasts, so adding NFL SUNDAY TICKET is the perfect complement to the PS3’s rapidly growing lineup of sports entertainment, including MLB.TV and NHL GameCenter. We’ll have more info, including a video tutorial and sign up information on the blog shortly. I hope you’re as excited for the football season as we are.
Way too much money for a football service. I wish xbox could come to some magical deal with ESPN to add sportsnation to their online offering. Plus it would be the perfect spot for it because they do so much audience interaction.
I'm not inherently anti-sports, but sweet zombie Jesus.
I'm sure they'll sell a few of these, but man, it would be nice if they had cheaper or a la carte options. I mean, it isn't physically possible to watch 14 football games on a single Sunday.

I thought it already was. Doesn;t it have stats? And multiple characters?
Don't numbers go up??
The new sports games are pretty RPG'ish. In madden 12 you can form a team with 10 other people and be the QB. You will raise your stars as a QB, and become a better QB. Same thing in hockey. Wanna be goalie? How about center?
You're role playing a specific position/character in a sports game.
The guy that writes the Tuesday Morning Quarterback column for ESPN is always complaining about how you can't get the NFL Sunday Ticket deal without DirectTV, wich could easily be impossible if you live in an apartment or in the city. So the opportunity to get that could be a bigish deal for some people.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)

Please just kill playstation home. I keep hearing about it and I just don't care about it, just kill home, no one thinks home is something that could be fun.
