As far as black and white go too. The differences in the games are
Black - at the end has this battle city where you can train against strong pokemon and get rare items.
The game has more buildings and looks more....advanced.
White - at the end has this jungle where you can catch unevolved low-leveled pokemon from earlier pokemon games.
The game has more trees and naturey stuff.
So most people choose white due to that whole thing. Or well. Due to the White Jungle. Not really the whole look. That doesn't matter.

hg/ss/plat are good games, but b/w have about 150 new pokemon, moving sprites, and a couple of other nice things that make them a good choice
as for which one to pick, the differences between the two are pretty slim, so just pick whichever has the cooler dragon on the cover
