So this is an issue I've been having for some time, last night it really just started bugging the hell out of me. Let me preface this by saying please don't suggest new hardware, I can't afford it right now.

Basically, my apartment is set up as a wireless network using an Airport Express as a router. My roommate has an iBook, I have a custom PC with a Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card. This marriage of PC and Apple technology has been a rocky one. I seem pretty much unable to use any kind of security, WPA or WEP (the airport wants to use a 64 or 128 bit key, the linksys card insists on only uses a 40 bit key), because my computer either flat out won't connect or the connection crawls along. When the connection is unsecured I can usually connect just fine, but I will experience lagouts at really random times. Being an avid WoW player, it's extremely frustrating when my wireless will lag me out during both peak and offpeak hours alike. Most of the time I have no more than average latency, but last night for example I was unable to maintain a consistent connection for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Basically, is there any trick to get these devices to cooperate a bit better that I have been thus far unable to find? Any help would be appreciated.

Much as you don't want to hear it, it's more than likely an incompatibility between your hardware.

You could try digging up some new drivers for your wireless card, or seeing if there's a firmware enhancement for your router but short of that you're stuck.

And to be honest I wouldn't say running the network unsecured is causing your dropouts. See if you can borrow another wireless card off a friend and observe if that has the same issues. Does the ibook run without issues?

I've never really heard him complain, but to be fair dropouts might not be something you'd notice as much with normal web browsing as you would playing an online game.

Update: I downloaded/uploaded new firmware for the airport express, posted 1/3/06, this seems to have addressed my issues thus far; the performance was like night and day. Hopefully it's not just a coincidence, but worth looking into if anyone is having similar problems.
