You know, i'm a terrible assault and yet I've been able to easily oneshot tacs and assaults with a hammer. Got a 8 killstreak with the hammer first time playing with it. Obviously its op. Brb making the same post repeatedly about it.
I was thinking about what you were implying here until it sunk into my dense skull. Sure okay. I'll go away and test it out properly. I'll focus on tac for a week, I should be able to pick it up by then. Get really familiar with it and the melta and so on.
I wont say a peep about it until I have all its perks and mastery with it and then a few more.
Hiryu you are mixing me up with someone else. I used to defend War. I played a dok and thought they were fine while everyone else bitched about them.
FWIW, melta does soft counter assault a bit, which is probably why it seems so good to you. I personally like furious charge because if you can sneak up on someone, it lets you kill them before they have a chance to react even with the faster melee weapons. Don't underestimate the significantly lower sound / visual signature.
Why would you be using your bolt pistol as an assault?
Devestator with iron halo and artificer armor running around with a bolt pistol is the most fun.
Because the Thunder Hammer with the "go fuck yourself" perk is 90% of the time a one hit kill, and it's that 10% that the bolt pistol shines in. The catch with the Thunder Hammer is that occasionally lag can throw off your distance judgment and instead leave your target alive since in actuality you only scored a glancing hit that doesn't kill them. This is when the bolt pistol becomes super handy because instead of having to chase a now very aware of you target you can just blast off and put a round through their skull to finish them off.
Yes, yes, yes. Bolter pistol is amazing for finishing people off.
the only weapons I'd call BS are the plasma cannon and maybe the hammer with the instant kill perk, but melee guys have it way rougher than plasma cannon jerks so meh
and guys with the melta are basically guys with the instant kill hammer except with a good chance of not killing in a single hit and the inability to attack non-stop or jet away. so I can't really complain about them at all (plus I just got the 250 kill challenge with it)
The stalker bolter is pretty ridiculous too, you should have to scope to fire it, because otherwise it is way to easy to kill at close range with it.
Also yes the zeal traits are noticeable, I jumped into melee against 3 other mediocre assaults and killed all of them with powersword mans zeal. As long as only one guy is meleeing you at once, you will win with most of your life left.
Just finished Descent of Angels. Ever read a crappy book and the more you think about it, the angrier you get? Yeah, that book, all my fucking rage. And it's not fluff related rage either. It's just badly written and the ending is this sudden unexplained blue balling that leaves you hanging. It doesn't even have a god damn thing to do with the Horus Heresy! That plot line is not advanced in any way, shape, or form!
Angels books suck except for Angels of Darkness...which is not Horus Heresy.
Hiryu, the book Legion is awesome, 'cept the end is kind of .."...what?.

Loving running a Tac with the two weapon perk, Bolter (Kraken) and a Melta is fun times, especially when a Raptor/Assault lands in front of me and I get to switch to the Melta. Tac and Assault I can manage, but I'll be damned if I can get the hang of a Devastator.
And to echo Biz, Legion is pretty good. Just finished it a few days ago.
I'm in the middle of Horus Rising right now and enjoying it a lot. My first Warhammer book and I have no idea if it's the best one to start with, but I figure I need as much backstory as possible to understand the universe.

A good starter author IMHO for WH 40K would be basically anything by Dan Abnett, like the Eisenhorn or Ravenor Omnibuses if you want to know about the Inquisition, and the Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibuses if you want to know about the Imperial Guard. The Shira Calpurnia Omnibus (different author) is p good for general Imperial Citizen/the way Imperial Society runs, IMO.

I started off with Eisenhorn and Horus Rising so you should be in good shape. If you want a quick crash course I'd check out the TVTropes page for Warhammer 40k. Not like percise info but definately will build some background in a hurry.
How significant is the health gain from the Zeal perks? is it something that will actually keep you alive if say someone is shooting you while you melee them?
Depends what they're shooting you with. You get about 2/3rds health back, maybe a bit less. Over half health. Doesn't regen your armor though.
it can be quite useful for heft fights. I had sword zeal and sure strike on me and was able to keep a point off two respawning dudes by stunning them the moment they spawned. One of them was a power axe assault who couldn't seem to work out that he wasn't going to be able to get the time to swing at me. If he'd taken off and shot at me he might have stood a chance, since I know for a fact he had at least one loadout with air cooled due to a previous kill from him. I was lucky though, I killed them a few moments apart so they staggered spawn. If the tac had've had a quick respawn perk on a loadout I probably would have been in a lot more trouble.
It seems to shock people pretty well. They can't quite work out whats going on. I'm sure they'll get the hang of it eventually. Just don't miss the first stun.
I think sure strike is the best "lock down this one guy" perk. It does take a bit longer to kill them but they can't fight back, only roll/evade/take off to try and get away from you. Using the stuns does less damage, so you take a few extra hits to kill them. In some cases you need to take even longer just to make sure they can't get any attacks in at all.
This can easily buy them enough time for their friend to round the corner/spawn/spot me attacking from a while away etc and finish me before I get a chance to fly off after the kill. Price I pay I guess.
I don't think it will allow you to "guarantee" a hammer strike. I'm pretty sure they should be able to roll out of it. Hammer takes soooo long to land.
With the sword at least it guarantees none of that bullshit turning and blowing you away on the spot, they have to at LEAST roll first. You know think a little bit. Axe strikes feel a bit too slow for the stuns to be worthwhile on a tac, although the axe hits hard enough that the first stun then strike should probably kill them or take them down enough to shoot them.
Also prevents "oh i will die anyway might as well throw my grenade at the floor" moments. None for you chummy! That's what you get for giving up instead of trying to survive.
Despite this post I actually spent more time playing dev and tac than assault today. I'm still completely and totally shit but I'm getting there. I wish I could shoot the lascannon worth a damn, I can't hit the broad side of a barn with that thing.

I'm working on the rest of my weapon unlocks, and let me tell you. The Storm/Twin Bolter is goddamn hilarious. Not great except close range, but holy shit is it fun to just fire a shitton of bullets in a short period of time. Working on Heavy Bolter and Storm/Twin Bolter right now. Some maps Heavy Bolter is just so goddamn useless.

I like the storm bolter quite a lot given that I am a terrible aim and it forgives me.
Incidentally whats does twin link do? I'm really curious.

Likely increases accuracy or lowers the spread.
In tabletop twinlink is basically taping two of a gun together, and lets you reroll a single miss. For example the chaos marines don't have a stormbolter, so instead their guys get a twinlinked bolter, in TT.
Yeah, I've just picked up the Storm Bolter myself. Replaced my Melta with it on my Stalker TAC. Mixed feelings about it, at mid range it's okay but not awesome... and at close range it's strictly inferior to the Melta. Hopefully Twin Link really improves the gun, otherwise I can see it getting dropped right quick.
Were I better with the Stalker hip shots, I wouldn't even need the Storm Bolter at mid range.
Also, CorriganX, saw you in a random public Siege game. Nice showing. Kinda embarrassed for myself, had a bad K/D ratio due to trying new builds and a bad habit of overextending. :P

Haha, yeah I recognize your name from the broken bridge map. It was fun. Feel free to add me on steam if you ever feel like playing together.
I find the stormbolter to be better as a solo weapon. Its not great for long range, but thats what your bolt pistol is for. You can definitely take 2-3 people out in a row with the stormbolter. The meltagun I find requires me to take too many shots while getting into a guaranteed kill range. The Stormbolter lets you fire while falling backwards, letting you break LOS and getting kills without throwing yourself into a gaggle of enemies.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
So I was playing on Broken Bridge, with my Stalker/T.Bolter TAC. Ran up to the first pipe took a right up onto the sniper cubby, and it struck me how specifically designed that one spot was for sniping. It's perfect for covering point B, it's also the go-to spot for ASTs to wreck snipers.
I remember playing lots of Halo, back on the XBox (you know, when you had to set up a LAN party to play a big game). Blood Gulch in particular, there were no obvious sniping spots. There were a lot of decent spots, but nothing with such broad range as in Broken Bridge. Also, it was a bit of a guessing game as to where the sniper is. The hunt for "that sniper" was like a game within the game.
Flashing back to the present with 40K:Spess Mehreen, I realized the super obvious sniper cubby resulted in a peculiar act on my part. Most of my "sniping" is actually me strafing around in broad daylight like the ol' man in Boondock Saints. While periodically I use the cubby, I generally avoid it because I know that as soon as I drop in some head shots every AST marine is going to flood that cubby.
So I wonder what you guys/gals thoughts are on sniping in Spess Mehreen? I'm not entirely sure it's a bad thing how it is now, but there was a certain "flopping around in the dark" that I miss from older shooter games.
Then the tech question:
How the hell do I improve my ping?
Most games I sit at 1-2 bars. I've opened the relevant ports, I've tested my modem, I have a hard-wire connection, I have a DOS prompt running ping to infinity just to see if there are any hiccups on my end (there aren't), and I'm at my wits end.
Every now and then I get a 3-4 bar game, which is nifty until there's a change of hosts. And even then, I start to get "stuttering" in those games as of late (concurrent with bad ping from other players).
Right now my only conclusion is that because I play in the twilight hours, I end up grouping with guys from the UK/EU? Is this just life with Spess Mehreen/P2P? Been a while since I played any FPS games online, and I figured that the problems of a decade ago would've had a solution by now (that introduces its own problems, of course).
With Peer2Peer connections your ping is entirely dependent on your host not having a shit connection. Once you notice your ping is shit its time to drop out and find a new game with hopefully less terrible ping.
I still want to get a private game going on. I'd love to have an all in house good connection game.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
If you play at odd times(like I do, working nights) you get a good 60% terrible host games. Its hilarious to fire a melta shot, roll away, reload and get ready to fire a second shot, then suddenly get the killspam from the original shot.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Yeah, I hear that. Also, that's why I suggested the Improved Melta Charge earlier. Sometimes what seems to be a direct hit to you isn't to the host, and it's good to have that reserve shot ready. Makes a nice 2-hit combo.
The Storm Bolter is starting to grow on me. Yeah, it's not great at close range... but since I switched to Storm I've died a lot less to rolling forward into enemy fire. Also that Storm clip is friggin' huge. Furthermore I've been making "tactical retreats" with the Storm since you've mentioned it, to great effect. It really is nice to roll away from an AST while keeping up the pressure, you can't do that with a Melta.
I like the storm bolter quite a lot given that I am a terrible aim and it forgives me.

Specifically it increases your unzoomed accuracy dramatically. Not so much you can snipe. But makes it a good mid range weapon without the zoom.
Multiplayer is pretty fun in this. By fun i mean, i frequently kill no one, i die as soon as im spotted (which doesnt upset me now, as ive adopted the attitude of "Well if He didnt, someone else was probably about to"), and i can only play an assault in Seize to by any semblance of an asset to my team...
But its got a pretty awesome 40k flavor and ill play it till i dont suck, huzzah!

It's punishment for being a bad person and using that load out.
You know, they REALLY need to fix the fucking netcode. I just played several matches where everyone except a few people had FULL bars, no reds...yet the lag effects were absolutely ridiculous. There were many a times where I would full on nail someone with a melta gun or plasma charge, only to have me magically die and them to still be at 100%, to what I can only guess would be that I was actually dead before I ever fired my gun or they appeared before me. I've had assaults literally just run past me, no animations, no nothing, and I'll just fall over dead.
I've been playing with one of my friends who is absolutely amazing with the Lascannon in private matches, yet he can't hit shit in these public games half the time.
I'm halfway to 41, but I'm afraid if its gonna be like this, that I'm just going to go ahead and jump ship.

I was in a game earlier where the host was the only one able to kill things. Everyone else in the game was getting absolutely absurd lag. The game really seems like it was built for consoles and then ported to the PC without even a moment of actual thought being involved.
When it works well, its a lot of fun. When it doesn't, its the most irritating pile of confusion I've played in a long time.

I'm up to Level 8 after finally sorting out my own PS3 technical problems, and I'm still more or less at that skill level. My main focus at the moment is learning the maps and unlocking stuff so I don't have to rely on being killed by people who match my playstyle to get better weapons. Of course, at the moment my playstyle is to run headlong at people firing my bolter and hope their health gives out before mine, but it's netted me 50+ kills so far

People need to come steal more of my kills.
You play as Captain Titus of the Ultramarines. The Blood Ravens and Black Templar show up in one or two places.
