Photoshop CS3: To Wait or Not?

I've been hearing that Photoshop CS3 comes out this "spring" (oh hooray for such nebulous dating). Now, I'm on the last day of my free CS2 trial and was wondering, is it worth waiting for CS3 or should I just get CS2 as soon as my trial runs out today?

Also wondering what benefits CS3 is going to have over 2 in the way of features and so on.

Thanks for any help guys

Wait, especially if you're on a mac.

Download the CS3 beta and use that 'til it comes out, it's on Adobe's website somewhere.

the only mac's I expect to use in the next few years are the ones here at VCU, which will be updated with CS3 when it comes out. Otherwise, I'm using PCs.

Still wait. CS3 has cool new features. Plus, do you really want to be kicking yourself a year or two down the line when you spent hundreds of dollars on the old one with a new version coming out only a few months later at the latest?

true I suppose. What are the new features supposed to be anyway? I've had trouble finding info out about it other than "It's the new version and it's better!"

is there even a firm date so I know how long of a wait this is going to be?

The problem here is then I spend hundreds (or over a hundred, I forget how much the student discount is) on CS2, and then an additional large sum of money for the final version of CS3

Look up CS3 beta vids on youtube. There are ones for just about every new feature.

And I've heard rumors of as early as March.

Where is the beta, anyway? I can't find it, and as I use CS2 all the time it would be nice to get the new one up ins, so to speak.

Everytime I'm always left wondering what's the point. It's not like the effects can't be done in the older editions. Maybe it's faster, maybe it takes up less memory, but I can never justify the cost of the different editions.

Several of the effects CAN'T be done in older versions, at least not well. Plus, smart filters is a huge advantage.

CS3 is going to kick ass. I've been waiting for basic things like .RAW support for ages. Sure you can download the .raw plug in from Adobe, but really it should have been supported in photoshop the day digital slrs were invented. The none destructive filters are awesome and have helped improve my work flow a lot.

CS3 is good. You only really need it though if your doing profesional things or take your hobby seriously.

I've also noticed that it is a bit faster.

I've read that CS3 now shifts the graphical load to your graphics card, is this true?

This site got that impression http://practicalmadness.com/2006/12/photoshop_cs3_first_impression
There’s a new ‘Performance’ section of the Preferences that lets you cap the amount of memory available to Photoshop (by default its memory cap is set at 75% of your system memory) and set up scratch disks. The pane also includes information on the GPU on your graphics card, which would imply that CS3 can use your graphics card to handle some tasks, relieving the load on your main processor(s).

    I hope so :) That's spiffy.
