I got to Stage X in Game Y before I knew you could Z

First, let me apologize if this has been covered recently, but in all honesty, I have no idea how these threads are moderated. I see two topics on the exact same thing within a week of each other, then I see another thread get locked because "we just had a thread like this a couple months ago." So, if this falls into some forbidden category not mentioned in the forum rules, sorry for rocking the boat.

Anyway, I was intrigued by the recent thread where the guy used Google as his home page for years, apparently, without noticing the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button. This type of situation always amuses me. Here are some of my own misadventures:

- One of the very first FPS's I played... I don't know, Wolf3D or Doom, maybe, I didn't know you could switch weapons. I thought you were stuck with the first weapon you picked up. I must have gotten at least 3/4 of the way through the game before someone told me.

- Beat Chrono Trigger at least twice before I realized you could save Crono. Didn't know there were multiple endings.

- Didn't even come close to getting Yuffie in my first playthrough of Final Fantasy VII. I'm surprised that this doesn't happen to more people... think about it; you have to get into a certain battle when walking through a certain type of terrain in a certain area just to even catch a glimpse of her. It's not like you spend hours upon hours wandering blindly through forests.

Any other instances you'd like to share?

I didn't know you could see if an attack would fail or succeed by reading the box in the bottom of Final Fantasy Tactics, until my friend showed me a few years after beating it.

Also, I didn't know you could change characters in Kingdom Hearts 2 until I got to the tron fight at the very end of the game(I guess I should have remembered from part 1, but that was years ago). I had to get on GameFAQs and find out how to swap characters.

    You can swap characters?

I thought you were just always Sora.

Either I don't remember being able to or I just never did and thus don't remember that, but wow.

I finished Phoenix Wright 1 and got to the last case of Phoenix Wright 2 before I figured out that you could save in court, not just at checkpoints.

It made finding the right evidence with no hp left so much more intense, though.

I meant the teammates, I always just stuck with Donald/Goofy, but for the MCP fight you need Tron, and can't exit into the menu, so I was stuck for hours, until I learned, oh click the left and right on the control pad.

I didn't know that Yuffie or Vincent in FF7 were optional characters for years. Guess I got lucky.

I didn't know about the Genji Glove in FF6 until the recent Advance release.

I didn't know how to use the junction system in FF8, and therefore didn't junction anything to my characters until Disc 3. I was wondering why it was so hard.

I wasn't aware of the M4 silencer swap trick in Counter-Strike for a pretty long time. I also never used flashbangs for like the first year I played.

What? I could have damaged him without a fully charged X-buster?

The first time I played King's Quest II, I was 8, I think. I was wandering around, picking up stuff and doing random things--not really accomplishing much. (It didn't help that it was in monochrome at the time.) I come to the beach, and see what looks like a pitchfork on the sand. Interesting!

    >get pitchfork

    No dice.

    >pick up pitchfork

    Nuh uh.

    >take pitchfork

    Nope.

It goes on for a little while in this fashion. I run to the other room and ask my unsuspecting parents, "what's another name for a pitchfork?" They tell me to try 'fork'. You can guess that didn't work, either. I gave up in frustration, and forgot about the game, playing KQ5-7 when they came out but ultimately forgetting all about KQ2 until I got to college.

I found a copy of it on a floppy in some bargain bin, so I picked it up and tried to find nostalgic value. I load it up, jump through hoops in XP, and lo and behold, I'm wandering around, just looking at things, when I come back to the beach. And all the frustration of before comes flooding back to me in a wave of anger, which is only fueled by the fact that, over ten years later, I knew the difference between a pitchfork and a fucking trident.

In MGS1, I was stuck for hours when it said that Meryl's Codec number was on the back of the box. I was running around trying to check every crate and box, and I got no where. My roommate walks in and I tell him about my problem, he throws the case at me and tells me to read the back.

    So dumb.

A trident is a type of fork. The crappy text parser is partially to blame.

You're not stuck with the first weapon you pick up. Both games automatically switch to new weapons you pick up as long as they're more powerful (although I think in DOOM it doesn't automatically switch to the BFG because it's 'dangerous', not sure though).
