Any hints on defeating the first boss? I know this has probably been asked before, but I either really suck at this game or Adam is made out of tissue paper. If someone could point me to a page with it on there that would be good too.
I have a double barrel shotgun, a sniper rifle, and a tranq rifle. I tried throwing the barrels, but often as not they ended up exploding in my face. I can't even tell if I'm doing damage to him.
If you run around the edges of the room, you should be able to find some EMP grenades. Those will stun the fuck out of him, and allow you some time to unload on him. There's also a small room off to the side (it's on the far right corner of the room from where you start the fight) that has a weapons locker in it with (I think) combat rifles or machine pistols. His biggest window of vulnerability seems to be before or after his big grenade tossing move, so once he telegraphs that you can sprint out of the way, grab a red barrel, and throw it at him to stun him, or huck an EMP grenade at his feet since he'll stop moving.
Basically it's "run, stun, and gun" over and over until he decides to fall over.

You don't have any grenades? 'Cause I beat him on my first try by throwing 4-5 frag mines at him from behind cover, then shooting him in the face a bunch with a machine pistol. I've heard the barrels are all you need to beat him though.
The barrel thing is what the walkthrough I read said too. I don't have any grenades. I was trying to do a non-lethal thing since I'm not super good at shooting. I'm probably just no good at it. I'm on the easiest difficulty and almost prepared to pay someone to get me past this bit.
Thanks for all the help. I didn't notice the grenades. I'll have to try that tomorrow. I'm too frustrated right now to have any fun.

I went to go take a nap, hoping that when I woke up, everyone would have figured out the "special message" by now. But it seems the entire internet just shrugged their shoulders, and gave up. Then went back to playing Deus Ex: HR some more.
Yeah, I am very disappointed in the internet right now
If this were a VALVE game, you would have solved it by now!
So far it seems to be something about oranges, lemons, and limes. More in a minute.
Regarding datapad: Composite Study 07121969 in Sarif Industry.
Holy fucking shit-balls! Sarif had Jensen's left arm and legs removed to get more Patient X tissue to confirm the (Megan's) study. I officially wish after reading this you could confront him about cutting THREE of your limbs off for science (you monster). Missed opportunity and totally punching him in my next run.
Wait, is that why he had them amputated?
I figured it was because he just wanted an augmented soldier of his own to fight off the all aug team that attacked. Damn, I was wondering why some of the files said they were able to get a hold of more samples afterwards. I just assumed it was because Jensen went back to work and they collected some from a check up.
Wow, that really does paint Sarif in a new light. I'm going to kill him next playthrough, the bastard.
Yeah, I'd also say the personal super soldier was part of it. But the text saying 'we need more Patient X tissue to test/prove this. Hey and in recent months Sarif told us he had plenty of X tissue samples ready!'
Dick, those were Jensen's three limbs. Was confirmed in the other emails that he only lost his right arm/torso damage in the attack but Sarif instructed the surgeons to make him a quad amputee.
Sadly, the technology was not yet there to make him a mind quad.
I never understood why they didn't give you a chance to call him out on that. It was something that many players should find and was in more than one email so it isn't some obscure things.
It was in Jensen's contract. I don't think this is information that was withheld from Jensen anyway, just withheld from the player until they read the e-mail. I'm sure Jensen had the argument with Sarif himself at some point. It also gives more weight to the "I never asked for this".
Jensen didn't read the fine print that said "When If you nearly get killed by terrorists, we can replace all your limbs with metal death machines.
Its always the fine print!

Man, what a batch of endings. The only one I really immediately ruled out was Taggart's Illuminati one, because I typically shy away from the idea of a shadow organization exerting that sort of control over society. Metal Gear Solid taught me this. Repeatedly.
Darrow's plan—while horribly flawed and rooted in nothing more than pure, smoldering envy—had some points that made sense, but I ultimately ruled it out, too. Human progression shouldn't be limited because one man is afraid of where it may take us.
That left Sarif's plan. I tended to agree with him the most. Change happens. There is little anyone can do about it. You can kick and scream, but human nature finds a way. That said, his plan leaves an awful lot of power in the hands of big corporations, and involves manipulating the public. Something I'm sure everyone was appalled about when we learned that Picus was doing. I couldn't do it.
So the choice was made. Blow the place. I take it all down on top of me and I don't even get martyrdom out of the deal. No one will miss me, except maybe Malik. I did save her life, after all. I like to think Pritchard would come to my funeral and pretend not to care (while he secretly does, of course). But it felt like the right thing to do. Sarif was right about one thing, evolution shouldn't be held back by one man, or controlled by one group. I had to trust that society—humanity—could guide itself through this, without a guiding hand. Like it has countless times over the last few thousand years. I didn't deserve to spin this to my whim any more than Darrow, or Taggart, or Sarif did.
It's over. Let society sort it out. On their own terms. It's like Adam says in the voice over. You just have to believe that humanity can make the right decisions. I know I tried.
My only consolation other than a pile of rubble crushing my mechanical body? At least Eliza agreed with my choice.
And one spoiler end game question:
How do the scientists get out if you let Malik die earlier in the game?
I went with Sarif not just because of DX1 but I would figure humanity would still move towards augmentation even if everyone died at Panchea. Also I like Adam and Sarif too much to kill them.
One of the reasons I love this game is how it's kind of the first part in (what I see as) a trilogy. Technology by the end can still do good, is doing good. The AI newscaster stuff is worrying, but the world in general isn't totally fucked. My first instinct was to keep moving with augmentation. But by the time DX1 rolls around, the evolution of what we saw in DX3 has become corrupted and horrible. The only ending I even see as an option by the end of DX1 is the new dark age.

It was hard. I love Sarif as a character. He's flawed, sure, but deep down he's a decent guy who is just deeply passionate about something. He genuinely believes in augs bettering mankind. You get the impression it's not just money for him. He cares about humanity. He cares about Detroit. And he has the best voice actor ever. He's like a little kid who stumbled into the wrong backyard sandlot game. He got in over his head with the big kids and didn't know what to do.
All he had was his ace in the hole. Jensen.

I gotta say, this hasn't happened to me. Pleasant surprise.
I just shot the first boss in the face with a shotgun till he died (unless the first boss is someone other than the first dude from the team that screwed you up).
Also, I used Typhoon literally once in my entire first playthrough. I actually bought the second level because I didn't want to use my lone EMP grenade and needed to kill a robot.

No, it's the senility. She's much older now than when she was presumably working as a nurse. It's funny, that's one thing people with mental degredation tend to do. Focus on a person at a certain age/place and only remember them in that way.

I only found one EMP grenade before the first boss. Maybe item placement is somewhat random or maybe I just suck at searching, but I thought I searched out almost everything before him. EMP and concussive grenades both helped a lot. I just stunned him and unloaded 20 pistol shots into his head a couple of times and that was it.

The entire news company should be far more disturbing than Eliza. You can watch the screens rolling as they literally fabricate entire wars out of thin air. And since they're the only news company you ever see, it stands that people would believe them.

Did you see all the police and SWAT books in Sarif's office? It's kind of endearing. And yeah, his VO is great. My favorite dialogues were always with him or Pritchard.

Regarding the laser rifle:
I try to be somewhat realistic in my actions while playing. I figured Tong would not be happy if I took his giant gun right in front of him but part of me realizes what game I'm playing so, can you take it without any consequences?
I was vaguely disappointed by the options I had at the end, there didn't seem to really be an option to present the world the real un-spun truth. Honestly the closest you had was Sarif's choice, which I thought was an OK one. Primarily because the only inherent downside of augmentation I had seen was implant rejection and Neuroprozene dependance. With access to my super-genes, that's not a problem any more. There are other dangers, but those are caused by bad people, not bad technology. The people are just as dependent on their governments for power and water, you don't need super tech to control people.
If you go with Darrow's choice that's just the Luddite option. There will be other technologies, and we can't put them all back in the bottle. Fire is dangerous, but that doesn't mean we should be cold. Hell, he's already announced that only with Augment labor can you build Panchea, and that Panchea is all that can stop global warming. So his option means death to everyone.
The other two options just hand control to the Illuminati, either over the long term (blow up the station) since you leave them in full knowledge of what happened and with the strongest military and science base you've seen or in the short term (if you actively side with them). Either way augmentation will happen on their terms, since they can simply steer the media.
I feel the game was direly lacking an option to send out your message, to say that Hugh Darrow was insane and that his act was that of a madman. That for all the prejudice against augments, it is an augment who has turned off the signal, and that while regulation is needed progress must continue. To announce to the world the data from subject X (you) and thus make it impossible to continue drug dependance for Augments. To expose the corruption of Humanity Front, and the insidious demands of the Illuminati.
Honestly, what I wanted was to tell the world what I had learned, and let them make their own judgement. I certainly didn't want to die and give the world nothing for my efforts.
Oh, and where was my option to just let the world burn and leave the signal on! Ha, or make it worse and take over all the augments even more directly using Eliza Cassan.

Also, damn is it jarring with the XP differential between stealth and non-stealth.
First run through the game, by the time I reached Zeke in the first mission I had 2 Praxis and was working on a third (naturally though I didn't buy the social aug to make that easier). Second run through just now, killing every single person on the way to him and I'm 2000 xp short of a 2nd praxis.

But killing dudes nets you more ammo, guns, grenades, credits, passwords, etc. it evens out well enough.
In my playthrough where I was half stealthy and half Rambo, I had at least 9 Praxis points that I just dumped into things at the very end because I knew the game was ending and I didn't want anything else.

Finished up my first run last night - loved it! 27.8 hours, nice work Deus ex.
Now I'm going after some achievements. For Foxiest of Hounds am I allowed to put enemies into their Alarmed state? Or is the requirement that I trigger none of the wall alarms?
I finally beat the game, so now I can go slog through like 80 pages of you guys chatting about it tomorrow. Didn't want to risk spoilers (even small ones) and that seemed like the best way.
I really enjoyed it, went for a non-lethal run and would've had pacifist achievement except, err... I sort of mowed down a bunch of guys during the tutorial level. >.>
Only realized what I'd done a moment ago. Look, mistakes were made. But I suppose I can instead look at it as Jensen came back changed, and part of that was a heightened appreciation for life, all life, even scumbags and assholes.
The double takedown animations are fucking fantastic, and I enjoyed them every single time.
I'm sure this has been mentioned a million times by now, but the conversation animations always kind of threw me. Everyone jerked about like they had Parkinsons or some other disorder that affected their ability to stand still while talking to me.
I daresay it's my GOTY so far, but competition remains with Batman due out, Diablo 3 possibly maybe not likely but there's a non-zero chance of it coming out by the year's end, and ME3 will own my soul in March, but it was fun, the cutscenes were enjoyable and it felt like a solid homage to the original. Further thoughts as I digest it and read through these exploding threads.

Further thoughts as I digest it and read through these exploding threads.
rolling his eyes at you and sighing during that last conversation in the last stage? I wanted to slap that prick with my big metal pimp-slapping hand.
At least I know you can shoot him, so I presume a Q would also work.

It does. I can confirm it firsthand.
So did I! But the asshole was still giving me the eye roll/deep sigh combo every time I started talking.
I pheromoned his ass to make him my bitch.
Just like everyone else I talked to
