If by dog-like you mean friendly than yes. My maine coon would wait by the door for family members to get home and follow them from room to room, just because he liked being by people. But my experience has been that any cat you make a solid effort to bond with during kittenhold with remain very friendly throughout its entire life.

Also, the past three cats I've had have all instinctively known how to play fetch. Throw a ball and they just bring it back no training no nothing it's just a thing that they do.

But maybe I've had weird luck with that.

Dinah only plays catch with herself.
She'll tackle whatever it is she's playing with, flip it into the air, dive towards it and knock it back up and repeat once or twice more until her toy gets knocked behind or under some furniture.

Speaking of which, tomorrow I must get her more of those cheap plastic balls with bells inside. I keep accidentally stepping on hers.

I never had a cat, learning so much here!

I know one area I might have trouble with is that I think it'd be cool to take my future cat on walks. I hear it's possible. But some people, like @irtehmongoose think it's very silly. Think I'd feel bad taking the dog for a walk and not the cat though :(

Most cats don't mind being left behind for a while, as long as they have food and a clean place to do their bathroom business. They're not all abandonment-complex like some dogs are, usually. Of course, there are always exceptional individuals.

Like, outdoor cats can go several days without attention if they are supplied with food. I wouldn't trust a domesticated cat's ability to get enough food purely through hunting though.

Yeah, he ran away one day looking like a normal gray tabby and came back three years later looking like that.

Well, a little worse than that. That's him cleaned up.

She's still just a kitten, really, since she's not 5 yet and is still growing.

The problem with leaving a bunch of food with a cat if you are going to be gone a day or so is that some will just eat all of the food and throw it up in the first few hours.

    I miss cats.

This pretty much describes my dog any time I point my camera or phone at him, it's hilarious. He'll be casually playing, then the second I whip out my phone he gives this look:

    img00061201106241831.jpg

As for the whole Cats v. Dogs debate, I've lived with both and can say with confidence that you really can't go wrong. It just depends on what you're looking for at the time.

Dogs are a hell of a lot more interactive, but cats are fucking ninjas. Like, real life, household fucking ninjas. It's 10x more entertaining to watch a cat going about their business than a dog, so that does go a long way to overcome the fact that they really don't give a shit about you or what you're doing.

When I was living with a cat it was in an apartment that was practically set up for ninja activity. That little fucker could traverse furniture and ledges across the entire place without touching the ground. It was truly awesome to behold.

i should get another cat -- it's been a year and a half since my boy kitty died, and my girl kitty does this "ohthankheavensYOU'REHOME" routine if i've been out of the apartment for more than a few hours. she's always been lovey, but i feel bad leaving her alone now. she is kinda crotchety and territorial now, though (she wigs. out. when cats come up to the window), so i'm not sure if she'd adapt to another cat, no matter its age. humph.

    So apparently this little girl

    541835326_7df18d7000.jpg

Caught herself a gopher the other day. And then as she was walking towards the house proudly holding her catch up high one of the dogs noticed walked over took it from her and ate it.

Which is probably for the best as if she had tried to eat it she probably would have ended up puking it up later anyways
