I think you can queue up spells outside of combat. Haven't tested it to see if the rune panel goes away after a while or something, but I doubt it would. That would make casters considerably less annoying, just prepare your spells ahead of time.
Yes you absolutely can que them up. Even save the game with a qued spell, at least that works running a single mage in my game.

Race notwithstanding, assuming I'm going WWRM, what is a good skill/trait load out? I was thinking swords for one and maces for another, while daggers (w/ the ranged assassination 'ability') for the rogue and wands for the mage. Not sure what school of magic to pump into him, though.
If you want to be 100% optimal, you should use lizardmen for melee rogues, minotaurs for ranged rogues, minotaurs for warriors, and insectoids for spellcasters.
Why minotaurs for ranged rogues?
Anyway you should only really have one minotaur in your party.
Not sure why you would use an insectoid to spellcast, i don't think willpower increases spell damage much

Dexterity does precisely nothing for ranged attacks since they cannot miss by virtue of a dice roll. Their damage is wholly determined via Strength. That's the line of reasoning for a super min/max group, anyway.

Every point of Willpower means you gain more Energy on level-up which translates into an Insectoid caster with 22 Int starting having far more Energy to use for spells before resting than, say, a Human with 16.

I have a tip for getting past the beginning of level 6:
The spiders spawn around you wherever you are a short bit AFTER stepping on the pressure plate. So basically you can run forward real fast and then the spiders will spawn on you, and you can possibly back up and get away. Beyond that is up to you. I went and found a hallway to fight of the spiders one by one then danced around the ogre until he died.
Then give him aggressive and head hunter for even more oomph? Yea, makes sense
Edit: but i think a more survivable mage is better than one that can cast a lot. Everything gives you energy and the difference is only 4 points of willpower if you max it
From what I've been reading on the Grimrock forums, even 2 points of Willpower (like from the trait) ends up making a significant difference in the long run. I wish I knew the calculations for such things though.

I refuse to min/max characters. My party is an unoptimized mess and I'm having a blast. My rogue has skill points all over the fucking place and sure she doesn't excel at any one thing but she's a damn swiss army knife that's bristling with all kinds of weaponry. My fighters are a bit more focused but still messy and they are doing fine. My Mage is kicking ass too. My party is made up entirely of Humans except for one Minotaur Fighter. My party composition is WWRM. I chose stats on the basis of Looks good to me.
Feel free to optimize if that's your thing and all, but so far this game has hardly required it on my end.
I'm getting kinda dissapointed in the difficulty. I min maxxed my characters horribly wrong so that they're all theoretically terrible but i'm now on the 6th level and rolling through everything, on hard. enemies need a bit more oomph.
You can enable the arrow buttons in the option screen so at least all the elements are there, just in a different setup. I prefer it over the Dungeon Master/Eye of the Beholder setup where you have a tiny view window and a large portion of your screen is taken up by the large-by-necessity UI.

I've settled on a Minotaur Warrior (armor, sword) and a Lizard Rogue (Unarmed/dodge) in the front, a rogue human (dodge, assassin, daggers) and a human wizard (spellcraft, Ice, Fire) in the back.
My monk-like Lizard is doing just fine at the moment, I find he avoids a lot of damage (has the Evasive trait). I'm a bit worried about unarmed, but so far he's pulling his weight damage-wise, and it suited the character thematically.
My human rogue is doing a lot of damage now she can use daggers in the back, and she has her other hand free for throwing weapons or bombs. It also means I won't have to worry about ammo so much.
My mage seems to be doing the most damage at the moment with the first fire and ice spells I got. After getting the Light spell she now has a hand free for throwing weapons as well, so if she runs out of mana she's still useful.
I ended up taking the Skilled trait for every character but my Lizard, who took Evasive and Fist Fighting. My minotaur has Headhunter, the human rogue Aggressive and the mage Strong Mind.
I flew through the first two levels with this build, it was a lot easier then with my first group. Knowing what lays ahead does help though.

Thank you! I'm not sure why this didn't occur to me.
edit: Does anyone know the combo for the second ice spell you learn? I've somehow gotten to, and am using the third one without knowing the second

Torches should stack. No, really. Inventory tetris with a legion of torches. Driving me nuts, man.
Also, if we're talking mechanics, I'm starting to think warriors are not worth it. Rogues seem to be pretty capable in all areas: I'm finding evasion tanks better than protection. Also, magic is overrated: ranged weaponry always hit (there's no to-hit roll) and you get a good amount of reusable bolts/arrows/throwing shit. You lose way too much time fucking with runes in combat, it's not worth it later on when you got speedy attacks going. I'm going to make a hotkey script for the magic, cause it's borderline stupid that there's no 'cast last' button.
Warriors are good. They do a lot of damage when you get their abilities working
Mages are also essential for the light spell, and other spells which i wont mention. Especially if you want your front liners to have shields and your rogue to not need a torch
I think humans make the best mages despite the extra energy on insectoids. Insectoids are too fragile and the extra skillpoint can be crucial.
Edit: evasive is a bad trait. Don't pick it. You get more out of agile if you're pumping dex or if you get dex from abilities later one.
Are they going to add any more classes, or are traditional classes (like ranger) just builds of the three main archetypes? (please excuse my dungeon master ignorance)
I had to EQUIP the rock in my right hand and throw it? Dragging and dropping on my screen doesn't do the same thing? Fucking...urgh, first frustrating puzzle I've run across yet
Every time I see Legend Of Grimrock I can't help but think that, with an in depth editor and small party coop, say up to 6 players, it could make a really sweet virtual table-like tool for D&D.

This is why they put the throwing knife there for you its a hint to use it
How do i use the torch? I went and picked it up, put it in my rogue's hands, and everything is still dark. How can i active the command so where i can actually see light?
I find I don't even need the torches, I use em to put on pressure pads when I am not dumping useless mage staffs and what not on them pressure pads. Heck, I find the torches screw with my night vision, yo.
My totally unoptimized team of human warriors in front & rogues in back are strolling through this place like they own it, slinging rocks and throwing shurikens from afar like a beast. They use all these magic spell scrolls for cigars and toilet paper.
I think next time I playthrough this, I may go with an all rogue team.

Whichever one you right click on, and then the cooldown triggers, so no there is no benefit to dual wielding. Sword and board is good, though.
