Xbox Heating Issues: 360 (DEGREES)

I'm having problems with my 360. It's a somewhat older model, one of the white ones. It's the second I've had, the first was replaced after a RROD with this one.

The problem is, I can only play my 360 for around 10 minutes before it shuts itself off due to it getting to hot, or it thinking it is. The only way I can play any longer is to have the air conditioning on in the apartment until it's really cold, point a box fan at the 360, and then I can play for a bit longer, but it's still a crapshoot as it could click off at any second. Needless to say, it's making my attempts at playing through LA Noire a pain in the ass.

What can I possibly do? Am I boned? Do I need to just bite the bullet and buy a newer model 360? Is this a problem that Microsoft is willing to fix for free (doubtful)? Any home mods or suggestions that don't involve voiding anything?

To be specific, after a certain amount of playtime, usually 10 minutes or so, the 360 shuts off, showing 2 red lights on the left side of the power button. Once I power it back on, I'm greeted with a message stating that the 360 features an auto-shutdown feature to prevent overheating that caused the previous RROD issue.

Oh, I forgot to mention one other thing.

I can play games from the hard drive all day without problems. Anything like Live Arcade games and what not never over heat. It's the same thing if I'm watching movies on it via my external hard drive. I can watch movies and what not all day on there and never have a problem.

Mine did that, too. Now it overheats immediately unless I have the case apart and a fan blowing directly at the heatsinks. I replaced the thermal compound and reseated the heatsinks, but it didn't help.

I think the solution is to buy a new one, unfortunately.

Do both of the fans still work? I had an xbox with similar symptoms and after some troubleshooting I realized that one of the fans stopped turning on. They're temperature controlled, so you may not realize that one has stopped.

In my case it was actually the fan header, not the fan itself... So I hacked one of the fans to use a full 12v from some extra unused header I found. It sounds like a hairdryer, but has worked fine for the past few years.

I'm assuming the fans are both working, cause when I start a game up it gets pretty damn loud. I'm thinking about buying one of those Nyko Intercooler fan attachments, but I'm not sure how much good it would do. I think I'm gonna be stuck getting a new one, unfortunately.

Those intercooler things make 360s hotter, not colder. It seems that if you can play off the HDD with no problems, only playing from disk causes things to overheat, it's probably the disk drive that's borked? Maybe it's shorting out or something, pulling a lot of extra current? I know I'd try fitting a new drive before trashing the whole console.

How hard is it to replace the drive? I'm not tech incompetent, but I'm a little wary when it comes to hardware issues.

Also, I tried plugging the console directly into the wall instead of the usual power strip I use, and it ran for a little while longer, but still crapped out after about 15 minutes or so.

Is your it registered with Microsoft? If not go here and register it. You can see if it is covered under a warranty. It should be if it was purchased new or was bought used, but it wasn't a refurb.

After that you could probably do two things. If it is eligible for a warranty you can force a 3 red ring and get it fixed by microsoft, or do a fan mod if it isn't eligible for warranty and hope that it keeps things cool enough to be used.

I wouldn't take it apart if it is eligible for warranty.

Well it's actually the 360 that I got from Microsoft as a replacement for my first one I bought new that got the 3 RROD, so it probably is eligible for warranty. How do I force a RROD without Microsoft being able to tell I forced it?

I don't think the warranty still applies to a lot of those. I got mine repaired for free twice, and the third time it went bad they told me I was SOL.

kinda a work around, but how big is your hard drive? You can install games to your hard drive and play that way. Since you have an older xbox, used HDs even the 250 ones are in the like 30-40 dollar range.

True enough. If I can't get a good or free price repair from Microsoft, I might just do that.

Well, I fixed it. And I feel dumb for not figuring it out sooner. After all, the 360 is just like a computer.

Took it to my dad, who is a computer repair guy, and all he had to do was blow out the vents with an air compressor. Tons of dust and shit came blowing out the vents, and it works like new now. Didn't have to take it apart, either. Just blew air into the vents.

So, if you are having heat problems with your 360, maybe try blowing out the dust.

I did Xbox 360 tech support on the phone, it sounds like you're boned unless you're an idiot and you've got all kinds of shit cluttering the vents on your console which it doesn't sound like you do. You get a year warranty for each respective repair (unless it's changed, MS is pretty petty) but outside of that you'll have to pay for the repair (which is NOT worth it given the ridiculous price that's basically equivalent to a NEW and less faulty 360, shipping time and the unlikeliness of the problem getting fixed). If you have an older console I wouldn't bother with a repair since you're just going to get caught in a repair loop. I'd have to deal with irate assholes (and justifiably so I suppose) who'd had 8 or 9 repairs on their xboxes and they were basically shitting blood when I'd give the same old scripting they'd heard before.

Edit: Okay, Haha, it's changed I guess which figures because Microsoft is a shitty company that doesn't bother to back up their equally shitty product. You get 90 days of extra warranty coverage after a repair, whether you paid the fee or not for an in service or out of service repair. Your best bet is to just get a more recent Xbox, save yourself a number of headaches/aneurisms.

Edit: Wow, you fixed it. Good for you. We weren't allowed to tell people to take those sorts of steps (even blowing out dust)

    NEVERMIND .

You know, like two days ago I started writing a post that was gonna recommend blowing compressed air into it, but I guess I never finished it. Guess I should've gotten back to that earlier! Glad your 360 seems stable now... I just hope nothing goes wrong down the road due to the repeated overheating. If it does, I guess you have ideas for what to do if it happens now? If you ever have to replace your Xbox, make sure you get one that is at least as recent as an Elite (late-model Elites are when they finally made them waaayy less likely to RROD because of a new processor), because your white 360 actually having not died in some way by this point (however long, exactly, you've had this specific one) is pretty rare.

Yeah I've had this 360 for around 3 to 4 years I think. It's almost an original 360 heh. Yeah if it does ever end up completely shitting on me, I'm gonna buy the Xbox 360 S model (the black one) just to be safe.
