Gamera 3 had the best giant monster suits of all time. Making a flying radioactive turtle cool is a really hard task.

I've only ever seen the MST3k'd Gamera films, which are probably the oldest and corniest with the lamest suits. That suit design is pretty freaking great.

Yeah the originals are pretty hilarious, I can safely say that I've seen them without MST3K, amazingly enough.

They did a trilogy in the 90s that pretty much beats the pants out of any Godzilla movie. And Gamera 3 is pretty much the Dark Knight of the Japanese Giant Monster films.

However South Korea won with this guy.



I guess The Host stretches the giant monster thing, since he isn't a city leveling behemoth or anything. But it's still what I consider the best monster movie out there. It's like Little Miss Sunshine meets Jaws.

The subjects are not strictly monsters, but I'm fascinated by the work done by the Speculative Dinosaur Project. It's an exploration of what life on Earth would be like if the Cretaceous extinction hadn't taken place.

I'm not sure who's the creative force behind Miyazaki's movie creatures, but this guy always stuck in my head as giving a wide range of emotions. On one hand, obviously a god/spirit. Powerful, but also serene. Having both a faint appearance and a strong appearance. And part of it still creeps me out a little.

as far as i understand it, a lot of miyazaki's designs are pretty heavily influenced by traditional japanese iconography

I have to say that so far this

has been my favourite. One of the things you notice about a lot of creature design is that they go for the old Greek/Egyptian/Indian style of sticking animals together. Man/Horse Centaur. Man/Jackal Anubis. Man/Elephant Ganesha.

See the Centipede/Eel/Nautilus above. Not to say it doesn't look amazing, but it's also easily comprehensible. When you get the really fucking weird designs (and not the ones that are just flesh + random bits i.e. this

), I think you get some of the best, creepiest creatures.
