Title Update 3 Out Now![/sizer]
The third title update for Gears of War was released Wednesday, January 11th, and contains bug fixes, balance tweaks and general improvements.
Improvements
1. All unlockable and non-purchasable characters are unlocked for System Link play. Online play still limits players to characters that they have unlocked or have purchased through DLC.
2. “Classic” stalemates are now enabled on the Execution and Warzone playlist. An option exists in private Execution to disable classic stalemates and re-enable the man-up rule.
3. The ghost camera can be raised and lowered using the Xbox controller d-pad.
4. “Must Active Reload” mutator has been made more restrictive. Issues with the Torque Bow and OneShot have been fixed.
5. “Retribution” ribbon is now compatible with dedicated servers.
6. Holding the “Y” button before being in range of a DBNO player and then walking into activation range will start the execution sequence. This is similar to holding “X” to queue up a weapon pickup sequence when walking into range of a dropped weapon.
Exploit Fixes
1. Removed Hammerburst and Longshot exploits with using the iron-sights/scope on Mercy where a player could shoot from a concealed position near the Sanctuary bells. Damage will not register when players are using the scope or iron-sights from that concealed position.
2. Fixed the OneShot exploit on Drydock. Players will be pulled out of the OneShot mounted pose when in certain positions.
General Fixes
1. A second player signing in on the loading screen before entering the pre-game lobby will no longer cause profile issues.
2. The transition from spectator player view to ghost camera view will no longer force the ghost camera view to point upwards.
3. The map cycle in QuickMatch is now randomly ordered.
4. DLC that is not owned by the current player will no longer stop the player from using DLC they do own.
5. Horde will no longer use the Versus weapon swaps. Horde players will have Hammer of Dawn and Mortar spawns on Overpass again.
6. Fixed the lens flare on a scoped Longshot not appearing for a player facing left.
7. Xbox system notifications have been moved out of the way of kill messages in competitive multiplayer. They now show up in the top center of the screen

The cringe from the Mortar will no longer cause players to drop their primary weapon.
The Hail Mary ribbon is now correctly awarded for long distance Boomshot headshots.

Free DLC: Versus Booster Map Pack
On November 24th, Epic Games released a free downloadable content pack for Gears of War 3. The “Versus Booster Map Pack” adds two more maps for online play. The new maps include “Bullet Marsh” and “Clocktower”, two old favorites from the first Gears of War, and are available in all modes. The other three are the new maps from the “Horde Command Pack: Azura, Rustlung, and Blood Drive, and are only available in public matchmaking via dedicated servers, unless you own the Horde Command Pack.
DLC #2: RAAM's Shadow Campaign DLC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EObKGFNolXE
Released December 13th for 1200 MS points ($15) and included with the Season Pass, so no additional purchase necessary for Pass owners. Focused on a 3 hour campaign following "Zeta Squad," prior to the events of Gears of War 1, as they evacuate Ilima City and protect the citizens against a Locust Kryll storm and take on the infamous General RAAM. Zeta Squad includes notable characters such as Michael Barrick (from the comics), Lt. Minh Young Kim (Gears1) and Tai Kaliso (Gears2) as well as a new female character, Alicia Valera. Most surprising of all is that you're able to PLAY as RAAM at various points in the campaign, complete with Kryll shield, escorted by a pair of Elite Maulers with Boomshields that reflect bullets, and an Elite Theron with a Bladed Sawed-Off.
In addition to the new campaign content, the pack also includes six new multiplayer characters (Barrick, Lt. Kim, Tai, Alicia, General RAAM and the Theron Elite) as well as a new Chocolate Weapon Skin Pack and 250 gamerscore worth of new achievements. More info available
here.

Gears of War 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSV7Ho09d1I
Gears of War 3 is the latest game in the popular cover-based third-person shooter series, and probably the best "Space Marines vs Aliens" game that includes neither Space Marines, nor Aliens. Gears 3 introduces 4-player co-op, a revamped Horde Mode, new multiplayer modes, a score-based arcade mode for the campaign, a leveling system full of cosmetic unlocks, new weapons, new characters and a whole lot more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF5rsJAqPQQ
Campaign
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxNheOwh62A
Gears 3 is the final chapter in the story of protagonist Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta Squad. Set a couple of years after Gears of War 2, Gears 3 sees the COG having dissolved into several smaller groups after the chaotic, mutating Lambent situation made larger settlements unfeasible. Marcus and the rest of Delta Squad are living at sea on an aircraft carrier when the former COG Chairman, Prescott returns from his mysterious disappearance with a message Marcus's dead father, Adam Fenix, regarding a possible solution to the potentially world-ending Lambent problem. In addition to the Lambent menace, humanity also has to deal with the last dregs of the Locust, clinging to survival much like humanity is.
Marcus, Dom, Baird, Cole, and Anya are all returning, with Anya one of the many playable female Gears. Dizzy and Hoffman will show up as well. In addition, characters have been pulled from other Gears' media, like Jace Stratton (voiced by Michael Bakari Jordan) from the comics, Samantha Byrne (voiced by Claudia Black) and Bernie Mataki from he novels, as well as new characters like the stranded leader Griffin (voiced by Ice-T) and Clayton Carmine to fill out the mix.
New firepower runs the gamete from the subterranean "Digger" gun that shoots a land torpedo underneath cover, to the heavy weapon called the "One-Shot" that can kill most anything in.. er.. one shot. The Retro-Lancer is a new, short-ranged rifle with a nasty bayonet charge and the sawed-off shotgun that's slow to reload but packs a mighty close-range wallop. Incendiary grenades join the mix to provide wide-ranging destruction, and players can finally pick up and use the Butcher's huge-ass cleaver. Finally, there's a unique co-op chaingun weapon called the Vulcan, which one person fires while the other one reloads. Get it right and you won't have to stop shooting until you run out of ammo. Every weapon now has it's own unique execution which can be unlocked after reaching a certain number of kills with that weapon.
Co-Op & Arcade Mode
Gears' brand of co-op returns with the ability to have up to FOUR players are once. On top of loading the singleplayer campaign with tons of Easter eggs this go around, Epic also introduced a new competitive scoring system to enhance replay value: As you and your teammates wrack up the kills, the score multiplier will increase, but if anyone gets knocked down the multiplier will decrease, so while everyone is gunning for a high score, there's also incentive to keep your allies alive.
Additionally, both Arcade Mode and Horde mode have a "mutator" system much like the older Unreal Tournament games. Everything from "big head mode" to "only regenerate health when you do damage" and much more is available.
Multiplayer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duO_aHTHkZI
Epic seems to have taken criticism of Gears2 multiplayer to heart, as the multiplayer performance in Gears3 has been improved through the use of dedicated servers, improved matchmaking, host migration and a public beta back in April that allowed Epic to get a head start on polishing the experience, fixing glitches and balancing the weapons.
The leveling system from Gears2 has returned, this time integrated into the game from the ground up rather than tacked on in a title update. Every game mode, from Campaign and competitive multiplayer, to Beast and Horde modes, nets you XP. The leveling system is tied to a new progression of unlocks. Though this leveling system, as well as various events and achievements, you can unlock new character and character skins (Like Dizzy, or a blinged-out Cole) as well as unique weapon skins, like the Golden Guns. Some skins are unlocked by completing tasks in previous Gears of War games (Beating Gears of War 1 on Insane nets you a golden sawed-off shotgun, while having Veteran Gear in Gears 2 gets you all five Golden Weapons, and is the only way to get the Golden Gnasher Shotgun).
The game shipped with ten maps, including beta veterans Checkout, Old Town, Thrashball, Trenches (The latter two with modifications to make camping far less viable), new maps Drydock, Hotel, Mercy, Overpass, Sandbar and returning favorite Gridlock! Additional maps are set to come with the Horde Command Pack and later the free Versus Multiplayer Booster Pack, including Gears1 classics Bullet Marsh and Clocktower, Gears2 favorite Blood Drive and new maps Azura and Rustlung.
The game also has a DLC "Season Pass" on launch, which will allow people to purchase the four main DLC packs for $30. (33% discount over the $45 pricetag if purchased seperately). As an additional bonus, you get the very exclusive set of Liquid Metal skins for their weapons. (Liquid Metal was previously going to be an available only to Epic employees and community VIPs.) The Season pass is NOT a limited time offer, so you can wait until all the DLC is out before deciding if you want to drop the $30 on all the DLC (which will be a mix of Campaign, Multiplayer, Horde and Beast content)
Competitive
The game shipped with six competitive multiplayer modes including returning classics like Warzone, Execution and Wingman (Now with only 4 teams that each spawn in a corner of the map), streamlined game modes like Capture the Leader(Combination of Guardian and Submission) and King of the Hill (Combination of Annex and KotH) and newcomer Team Deathmatch (Each team has a limited number of lives. First team to exhaust the other teams lives win).
Horde 2.0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXAfZScv760
Horde is back with an much expanded scope. A new cash system allows players to buy ammo and weapons, buy back in after they get killed, or build fortifications. Fortifications fall under 5 catagories: Turrets, Automated Sentry Guns, Barriers, Decoys and Silverback powered armor. A sixth catagory, Command Centers (which allow you to call in sniper attacks, mortar strkes or even Hammer of Dawn strikes) was added in the first DC pack. The more you build, the better you get at it, allowing you to build better and better versions of things - Such as higher damage ammo turrets. On the enemy front, there's now five different "sets" of spawns, so players can never been sure what to expect (no more always expecting a bunch of blood mounts on wave 10). Mid-wave objectives, like "finish the round in 2 minutes" or "perform 7 chainsaw kills," can be completed for extra cash, and finally every 10th wave is a random boss. Brumaks, Beserkers, Corpsers and more can show up during his wave.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFtTxz_YcEk
Beast
Originally conceived as a reverse Horde, Beast mode has evolved into a time trial that sees up to five players taking on the roles of the various minions of the Locust Horde as they try to burn through 12 waves of entrenched gears as fast as they possibly can. The more kills you make, the more money you get, which allows you to play as more and more powerful creatures, ranging from the small Tickers and Wretches, to the common Drones and Grenadiers, to more specialized Locust like Boomers or Kantus, all the way to the powerful Beserker.

Smells like.
Victory.
Scott! Play some Ticker Horde with me? ;D
I beat Gears1 PC on insane today (after beating on casual to unlock insane plus recollect all the cog tags :P). Motherfucking game froze on my RIGHT as I unlocked the "Complete Act 5 on Insane" achievement but before it said I unlocked the "Commando" Achievement. Thankfully it turns out that not only did I get both, but the game didn't corrupt my progress when it crashed. Yay.
Glad I beat RAAM on insane before I started my insane run, otherwise things may have turned out very different (and very ragetastic.)
Gears 3, you are so close I can taste you
http://www.joystiq.com/screenshots/gears-of-war-3-epic-edition/4442815/#/22
Not quite as cool as the steelbook case used in the Gears 2 limited edition (and in the Dead Rising 2 Zombrex Edition, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy release) but still pretty cool.
I also just realized there is no "Making of" DVD like there was the last two games. Kind of a bummer, but they did release a ton of those short videos throughout release.
EDIT: Also, seems there IS a steelbook case.
That does look nice. Would rather have that in my Limited Edition than the data disk thing.
Is this official, or just some fan club thing? If it's the latter, is it legit or a scam?

Asking because I was reading something about the update on 3 only checking once about some other unlock and then you're screwed.

How it works is once a day when you load up Gears3, it'll check to see if you have VG unlocked. If you don't have it, no biggy, it'll check again tomorrow. And the day after, etc. etc. If you DO have it, it'll unlock the Gears3 VG awards and never check again. This can fuck you over if you play before the first title update comes out (Dunno if it'll drop before the 20th or not) as the shipping version of Gears doesn't reward you with the Gold Weapons if you have Veteran Gear. So basically it'll check if you have VG, unlock the non-rewards, and by the time VG is fixed for the official launch, it will already be set to the "never check again" mode.
360voice is owned by gamerDNA, which looks like it's a gamer blog website. I don't think it's a scam, but it certainly isn't an official contest from Microsoft or Epic.

Also I'm never going to get to 100 in beers of whore 2.
BOOO!
They said they'll keep having XP events in Gears2 as long as people are still playing it.
After Tuesday who is ever going to want to come back. I got so close... currently 87. Thought I was going to make it but then I spent too much time with the girl the last couple weeks. Oh well. So amped and nice work on the new thread!!!
And am I the only person planning on getting this just for horde with buddies and not touching the multiplayer? :P
EDIT: I got that email too, Snugglesworth - you probably signed up to 360voice at some point (it's a service where your 360 blogs about you. Here's mine).
The rules and terms of the contest are here. I've already set up a group, called The Allfathers, that you can join here.

Savage Kantus multiplayer skin is a preorder bonus from Amazon.com
Read the OP foo!
So I traded in the following games toward pre-ordering Gears 3 for the 50% trade-in bonus:
1. Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions: $19.50
2. Rayman 3D: $13.50
3. Steel Diver: $19.50
4. Super Monkey Ball 3D: $15
5. de Blob 2: $22.50
6. Beautiful Katamari: $7.50
7. Pilotwings Resort: $22.50
Total Value: $120
With the exception of Katamari (bought for $6 at Blockbuster way back), all of these were games given to me for review. Normally I would sell off unwanted games on eBay, but with this promotion I figured the trade-in value would match around how much I would potentially make via online.
I was also given a card for free membership to BB's Gamers Club, free of charge. I was under the impression it cost $15 to enroll, so either I was given a deal or I was mistaken.
I also showed a link on my phone to Wal-Mart's bundle promotion (game plus controller for $99.99) at checkout, and the manager gave me her guarantee that she would honor it when I go to pick up the game. I assume this means getting $10 off Gears 3 as well, since you're technically saving $20 through the Wal-Mart bundle.
Lastly, the dude who helped me with the trade-in procedure was clearly of the hardcore variety, wearing a Zelda pin, a Decepticon pin, and getting into a conversation with his friend about how awesome Game of Thrones (the HBO version) was. I advised him to never speak with other people regarding the books, as they'll almost always let a spoiler or two slip.
After I gave him my e-mail address, he paused and stared blankly for a minute, stating he recognized the term from somewhere. I told him it was from Xenosaga, and he lit up and asked me for my Gamertag, as I was "the coolest customer he had ever served".
So that's $120 in BB credits, a $10 (if not $20) discount off the controller, a Gamers Club membership, reward points, a new friend, and an ego boost.
All in all I'd say it was worth the drive.

No, I know it's a preorder skin, but I also heard it was for Beast and not for competitive. It holds water especially if you look at the Savage Grenadier Elite - that thing's hitbox for multi just wouldn't work.
@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
As far as I know, they're all for competitive multiplayer. Beast mode isn't a mode you want to add exclusive content to, since it's essentially class-based and thus balance is a major concern. I'm pretty sure the Savage Kantus available in Beast Mode is not an exclusive: it's available to everyone.
Also, the Savage Grenadier Elite doesn't really have any more bizarre of a body than has been seen in Gears before. I'd say Skorge had a more fucked up body and he still has the same hitbox as every other character.
Also, PSA: The Gears PA metatag is currently ONE THIRD FULL. I'll likely have to make a new tag next week but if you want in to Club Die-Hard Fans Who Are Awesome fire a request now.
@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
EDIT: Also, IIRC, the Savage Kantus has unique abilities in Beast Mode, such as being able to roll into enemies and do damage to them with all the spikes on it's back. (Granted it was awhile ago when the developers were talking about that so who knows if it's still in the game.)
EDIT2: Nevermind, I was thinking of the armored kantus in Beast Mode.
My gamertag is Nibcrom Lives.
Either way, I'd hold off until the list is filled before making a second metatag. I understand that if there really is around 150 PA members that want to sign up to the metatag, it'd be necessary, but right now there's only 35 or so that are on it. Just my two cents.
Unfortunately you can only go one level down, so you can't see friends of friends of friends, so chaining the two together wouldn't work. But if we have, say, a hundred and fifty people who want to play Gears, those extra fifty should still have a metatag to group up with.
