So I installed vista. Lo and behold, I need a function of XP (notably a driver not yet working in vista). So I wanna dual boot, but I have no clue how to put xp on this drive as well. Anyone else happen to know?

Basically you will create a new partition on your hard drive and install xp onto it. When you create mutliple partitions on your hard disk you are essentially splitting it into different disks entirely. Once the partition is made you boot up off your xp install cd and install xp onto the new partition. After installing xp, you can choose which partition you would like to boot up from.

Close, but the last part is incorrect. After installing XP, you will only boot to XP, since XP's bootloader never heard of Vista (and believe me, there's no way to keep XP from putting in its own bootloader, replacing Vista's bootloader or GRUB or LILO or whatever you had there.

You'll need to then boot from the Vista disc and get it to reinstall the Vista bootloader. I don't know where to find this information but it's online somewhere, I'm sure.)

    Um.

You put the XP install disc in the drive.

You boot from that install disc.

    You install XP.

I hope you kept some unpartitioned space free, because otherwise you'll be reformatting the entire disk.

EDIT: It is possible to resize your Vista partition, install XP, and fix the bootloader. It is far easier to just nuke the drive, install XP, and then reinstall Vista.

Exactly as Warlock said. When you're first installing XP or Vista, there will be a blue screen that shows all the drive space you have available. You create a partition and type in how much space to allocate for it, and then you install the OS to that partition. When they're not dual booting most people just allocate the whole thing as the main drive, but otherwise you're going to have to split it.

    EDIT: This screen:

Ok, so lets say I'd rather not format the whole drive. Can I partition unused space without formating?

You need a non-destructive partition tool like Partition Magic. There are free alternatives like GParted. I've never used it but DLTV, a reputable video podcast, says its solid.

Pretty much the same interface as Partition Magic or any other program that does what it does. What problems are you having?

    Dos? Man what?

No, there should definitely be a gui.

Try typing in "startx" (no quotes) if you get a command prompt.

Otherwise well shit it's not working for whatever reason.

I got to where it told me to put in startx to start the GUI, and I did and it told me a bunch of modules couldn't be run.

Gparted is pretty simple. If you're having problems with the command line version, get the Ubuntu live CD. Burn that and boot to it- it includes a GUI version of GParted.

Which works fine; I used it on my XP install the other day with no issues. Make sure you're backed up anyway, though.
