You might want to check out Borderlands - it's not an RPG in the common sense, but think of it as Diablo with shooter controls. I also recommend Titan Quest. Both are great coop games.
and I always, always have to mention Baldur's Gate 2, although it's probably not exactly what you're looking for
I second the Borderlands recommendation. The guns customization options scratch the exact RPG itch you describe. Grab it on Steam the next time it's $5 or $10.
DQ9 is 100% customizable characters with graphics for every item you equip
want to run around in a bikini swinging a giant axe? uuh... of course not
yes I do
...Perhaps I need to put some more time into DQ9

Since it was mentioned a lot I'm going to ask about The Witcher. Is Witcher 1 really good and should I get it before Witcher 2? Or would I be better off just getting Witcher 2 because it does everything better than the original?

I'll throw in my vote for Borderlands. I've never played a game that felt more like Diablo (but awesomer). So many guns.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

Definitely do Witcher first. They're both amazing games, but after you do the second one it might be difficult to go back to the first.
If you have a computer that can handle it, Witcher 2 has just about the best graphics of any game ever.

Try one of the Icewind Dale games. The first one is hard.
The second has more options.

That's all you'll need for the rest of the year. Probably half of next year too.
Though I'll also second borderlands especially if you love loot. :P
