Oh, I have no problem with campers. The Specialists had it's fair share of tossers who thought that hiding in a corner is going to get them somewhere. All that would happen to them is they'd get stuntkilled over, and over, and over. It just bothers me that people would play a game that is all about stylish gun battles and then just sit around with their thumbs up their asses not actually enjoy all the cool shit the game offers. These people are incredibly boring and need to strapped to a chair and forced to watch Hardboiled and A Better Tomorrow 2 until their eyes bleed.

I only watched the first A Better Tomorrow. Was the sequel directed by John Woo as well?

    Also, The Killer.

Yeah, ABY2 is also a Woo flick and it's a million times more fucking awesome than ABY1. It's actually my favorite of Woo's HKBO flicks. The ending gun battle is a thing of violent beauty.

Anybody else getting this "Incompatible Data" error? Every other time I try to join up on the Box it fails and gives me that alert.

I'm going to gamble a guess that it's those dern-tootin' preorder shenanigans ya'll kids be raving about these days.

Also - MP3 on Hard w/Free Aim is hard. Although, it was admittedly worse for the first half of the game before I figured out Shootdodging is completely free to use at will. I really thought it was linked to your adrenaline bar, like the normal slow-mo

  • BritishDavidBritishDavid Registered User regular
sorry guys little held up still intend to jump on again in 30 mins or so, if you get 'incompatable data' quit to main game menu and rejoin 9 times outta ten it works, otherwise it's a restart 360 thing, we've all had it x

So was thinking of picking this up PC-side when it comes out, what's the overall consensus been? Mainly on the singleplayer?

Reviews have been a little mixed from what I've seen.

It has an average review score of 87 right now, how is that in any way mixed?

Anyway, the single player is very good. Main complains I have seen so far is that it's too hard and so people feel more compelled to stay in cover rather than shootdodge all the time, but it's really all in the way you choose to play it. They kept the feel of Max Payne, the narrative, Max himself, etc, very much alive.

WAIT what??? Shoot dodge isn't linked to Bullet Time!? I just beat the game on hard and knowing that would have made it a tad bit easier. I'm pissed!

Agreed. On that note, how are you finding the MP3 multi in comparison to our old TS? Would you suggest it in lieu of the earlier as Vino and the crew are still working on that other thing?

I'll probably eventually get the PC version.

I haven't checked in on their progress lately so I dunno. I do know that they're still in very, very early development though so just get MP3 and love the shit out of it in the meantime.

I haven't played MP3 yet because I don't play console shooters. Gamepads make me cry when aiming. Needless to say, these past few thread pages have been torture.

No, that can't be right. I'm only on chapter three and completely confused as to what refills the adrenaline bar. A single shoot dodge will empty over half the bar (I'm on medium), which makes no damn sense at all.

I'm digging the environment, but on medium I've been forced to play the game like every other pop and shoot cover-mechanic game. Doesn't help that the cover system is pretty damn clunky, I've ran into several walls and pieces of cover that the game refuses to register.

In chapter 5 and the game opens up, love it, it such a beautiful looking game! Shoot dodging (right bumper) is not linked to bullet time, bullet time is right click analogue stick only, you refill the bar by killing people outside of bullet time and shootdodging, the more bullets you out in a car the more bullet time you get.

Oh and I love this game, but yes it's hard.

HOLY SHIT THR START OF CHAPTER 6! Is to early to speculate why this game didn't do well with reviewers when it's clearly a 9/10 game?

Actually, shootdodge does drain adrenaline. It just, weirdly, doesn't require it. You can use it on an empty adrenaline bar.

Also, why have a couple people said that about not doing well? The game has a review average of 87, which is well above average and a pretty great score. Compare it to other games you think are well-reviewed.

So I rented this (disc 1 only) and I like it.
I like how Max is really burned out, ashes pissed on, and scattered to the wind.

Not too keen on the "hey remember me, your new buddy?" thing but the dude's growing on me. Since this is a rental, about how far am I gonna get before I have to stop? Just cleared chapter... 4 I think (Hoboken).

Question about collectables: I'm pretty good at scouring every nook and cranny I can, but are collectables tied to various difficulties/game modes? (this is both regular evidence and golden gun pieces)
I can't find that magazine in the first level or any of the gun parts.

Collectables are not linked to difficulty, yes they are well hidden. Everybody in the oom has to be dead before you can pick up clues too.

Chapter six is destroying me. If I don't take a break I'm fairly sure I'll snap my controller in two.

How in the world do I refill bullet time faster? Far as I can tell, the damn thing is random as hell. Its definitely not working under the old Max Payne rules of kill a guy, get some refill back. At one point I did a shootdodge, killed like three guys... and didn't get a single bit of bullet time replenished.

How am I supposed to exit cover without getting my balls shot off? Roll out first? Because so far I've just been pressing the cover button, causing Max to unstick to the surface and saunter over to another spot of cover... while I get perforated by a billion enemies.

I'm fairly certain that if I knew the damn rules and the damn controls, I'd be having a blast. But good god, this is brutal. Clumsy controls and unclear mechanics are killing the experience for me, production values be damned.

Max Payne thread, I need your help.

    The hotel, third act:
I'm on the roof, after planting the explosives and I'm fucked. I have one pill bottle unless I die enough to get two and I cannot for the life of me get past this part.

I can usually get up to the machinegunner on the roof, but there's just no way I can kill him fast enough to avoid the roof collapsing and one time I didn't even get to him before that happened. Usually he just kills me.

Is there a strategy or something I'm overlooking or am I just going to have to drop it down to Easy for this part?

my best advice is to shootdodge over the cover as you kill the three enemies before the machine gunner. once in cover, use bullet time or shoot dodge, and spam headshots on him. once you dislodge his helmet it's one shot to kill, it's very easy if you can time it right.

If you can get knocked down behind cover, and stay on the ground, you can shoot those helmeted assholes from behind cover while they can't shoot you. They'll just hit the cover.

I'll give it a go next time I play, probably sometime tomorrow. I've been dicking around in the score attack mode and I actually checked it out several times - a normal shoot dodge gets rid of at least half the adrenaline meter.

I think I'm going to just throw it on easy, blast through it in a day or two, and enjoy it as a rental. The more I dig into the game, the more I'm convinced that no, I'm not playing it wrong. Shoot dodging is basically useless, because it not only leaves you exposed but drains so damn much of the meter. Plus, it looks like killing guys while shoot dodging doesn't add any to the meter - making it triply useless.

  • TurkeyTurkey So, Usoop. TampaRegistered User regular
Don't use shoot-dodging if you have a lot of adrenaline. Use normal Bullet-Time for that. Shoot-dodge's advantage is that it doesn't require any meter to activate, plus if you use it to jump towards cover you'll be able to kill more guys than if you just ran towards said cover.
