Man, I spent way too much time playing this weekend. The car advice totally improved things and the game is a blast. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that getting to the bottom of each skill tree gets you 10 bonus points. Can anyone actually confirm this?

We think the poster just meant that reaching level fifty lets you max all the trees and have ten points left over.

    9 points to max fury
15 to max combat and survival

    That's 39 points and you'll have 49 by level 50.

It's was not meant as 10 free, it was a bit miscommunicated. It was meant as, if you spent 9 in the first, and 15 in the 2nd 2 trees, there are 10 points left over.

    Edit; Totally beated Blained.

One more level and I'll get to the bottom of my combat skill tree. Then we'll see.

so i finally beat the game
the ending wasn't too bad actually. could have been a lot better, but it wasn't horrible.

    one question though.

what exactly unlocks access to white on the helipad? i killed some humans for a while, then i killed some armored infected for a while, then i guess the stairs unlocked.

is it a purely timing-based thing, or do you have to trigger it somehow?

Ran in to my first Butcher last night. Definitely well described as an Infected on steroids. A kick stopped him just enough time to land a few swings, then we started trading blows. I think I'll have to kick, swing twice, kick, swing twice, etc.

Musings on the ending and various game oddities
So White knew you were immune all along, as per the blood drive (cover for the lab testing). When everything goes downhill, he needs to know what's going on. Charon offers to help in exchange for a ride out. White goes along with it. Charon hacking everything is how White knows where you are/what you are doing. When you get to the prison, Charon sees you in action, and it scares the crap out of him. So he convinces White to set you up. White gets the 'antidote' and then gives Charon the finger, not wanting to let the super terrorist out of prison. Charon recruits you guys to get revenge on White and so he can get out. The antidote doesn't work because, as Dr. West mentioned when you get to the lab, the virus mutates too quickly to stop. Clearly the vaccine mutated, and hits White hard. The fleet quarantining the island shows that it's a government operation, but whether its Chinese or Australian or -insert third party here- is unknown. They definitely left a lot of room for DLC, addons, books or sequels.

Kick once only. Secondary kicks don't stun/stop him. JUMP kicks however can. My method was to throw weapon while he is running, that'll give you a free moment to kick when he gets close too. Other than that, grap a shotgun, aim for the head..

Edit: Meh, its $11, so I bit the bullet. I'm interested in Dead Island enough to read a book about it.

The antidote not working is the only thing about the ending that does make sense. We don't even know who Charon is, if he was the guy who flew out in the helicopter with us and he was working with West, why didn't West just have HIM meet us and take us straight to Block C. Furthermore, we hadn't done anything in the prison to make anyone believe we were interested in doing anything but saving the girls and getting to White, Charon (or White) had no reason to distrust us. We wanted off the Island, he had a chopper coming.

White was clearly going to betray us, but we should have met him first so that a reason for his treachery could be spun up. I'd have probably gone with...

West - "The antidote doesn't work, it just stops the symptoms for a few hours and then makes things even worse!"
White - "Curses! I know what will work, stealing your blood!"
All - "No blood for you!"
White - "Then this antidote will give me the power I need to slay you!"

We weren't supposed to like the infected, they are what keeps the game dangerous (their speed means all standard tactics are the wrong tactics). They did get absurd though, they should have been given more 'momentum' so you could use the dodge move against them with good timing.

I dunno, I seem to dodge the Infected just fine. And give them a good boot to the face on top of that. Do kind of wish there was a different animation for a sideways-dodge-kick, though.

But unless there is some kind of terrain feature to annoy them, they don't slow down, so if there is a group of them you haven't really achieved anything other than splitting them up and making them more dangerous.

Can anyone give me some tips on a good build for Logan? Do I just grab all the throwing skills? Is the Drunken Master skill something I need to get in on? Also, is there a way to redistribute your skill points?

  • GaryOGaryO Registered User regular
As a Logan player I can offer the following advice, Get the developers mod number 4 (purple skull) Its a knife that explodes when you throw it, but unlike the sticky bomb knifes you make, once thrown it doesn't disappear it also onehit kills walkers and infected. Then get the Boomerang skills and the skill that makes enemies nearby take damage when you throw things. once you have these things you are a throwing god of death and can just laugh at every zombie you come across

^^ This mostly, however there's still tons of levels left to spend. His fury is OMG KILL KILL KILL. It's particuarlly useful for the bigger threats, one fury cast can take out any thug floater and maybe butcher, haven't get there yet, not sure. It's worth building the first point at least. I also took his some of his second tree as building one hand dmg and making the stamina lower can aid in your early game....pre-grenade knife.

91% done on the main questline, I'm in Act 4, and I've gotta say, Bulls in close quarters are still annoying me.

Part of it is admittedly my own fault. I should stick to "dodge, swing a few times, back off", but I get a little too happy wailing away on them and then he kicks me over for a third of my life.

Not gonna lie, I left that bitch's camera and that guy's fucking brother out to dry. Maybe when I solve the zombie apocalypse someone can go fetch your shit / sibling, but I'm close enough to the end it's time to get serious about finishing things up. Maybe tonight I'll finally be able to read the spoilers you guys have been so dilligent about using.

Wow. I had heard the ending was bad, but I had no idea what I was getting into. It kind of cheapened the whole game for me, but the rest of it was such an awesome and solid experience that I will still be going back to it.

    What are developer mods?

    What are developer mods?

hidden on the island are various coloured skulls (brown, orange, green, blue and purple) when you find one you then have to find its corresponding shrine which will be hidden out of the way somewhere. When you place the skull on the shrine you pick up a developer mod. instead of upgrading a weapon like a regular mod you just create a unique weapon. So far the ones i've found are the game-breaking exploding knife, and a glove which allows me to throw lightning at zombies like im a sith.

  • DrezDrez Registered User regular
    What are developer mods?

There are a few skulls hidden around the island. These are special skulls that you pick up and aren't actually recorded in your inventory anywhere. They are different colors. There is a specific hidden drop-off location for each skull somewhere on the island.

You turn the skull in to its proper drop-off and then your reward is a gimmicky developer mod plan. You can make these for the cost of 5 diamons and $10,000. They are expensive to repair, but you can repair them. You can also upgrade them to level 4.

Anyway, they are fairly useless except for maybe the plaguebringer knife. The left hand of glova is funny but in the end it's a waste of time.

Don't be afraid to retreat and kick. No matter what character you're playing use guns in some situations. Guns make swarms of infected much easier and a pride mod on a pistol will make taking out the harder zombies a bit less complex.

Kick, step in to take a swing, then step back or circle-strafe behind. Use terrain/objects to funnel zombies one at a time towards you. And if you get in trouble run away and heal up.

everything goes down in 2 hits or less. :D

also, found a friggin' awesome weapon combo: Plaguebearing Military Knife + Phoenix Axe. the axe ALWAYS sets alight zombies that have that smoky haze around them. when it does so, the fire DoT is absolutely massive - around 1k per tic.

the plaguebearing knife ALWAYS causes zombies to puke and then develop that smoky haze around them.

combined, that means you get a guaranteed fire proc on anything you throw the knife at. :^: last night, i killed jason that way. it was incredibly quick.

so whats up with revolvers being as useful as the the lint that accumulates on my scrotum, i was thrilled i found a gold one, and after ungrading it looks like shait, and here are some other guns i found lying around

The trick I found with guns is: don't use magnums, especially if you're playing Purna who gets 30% damage to modified weapons. Magnums can't be modified and unmodified pistols are useless against undead. Pride is useful against the bigger zombies because it knocks them down on crits, so you can finish them easily with a melee weapon or stomp for an instant kill. Regular guns aren't that useful against walkers, even when modded. But, against infected guns can be very useful because it slows them down by making them stagger with each shot and can thin the herd before they overwhelm you.

Also, guns make groups of humans trivial, it only takes one headshot to take them down. Purna's fury on humans seems incredibly backwards though. It is the opposite of how guns normally work. Doing ridiculous damage against zombies but next to no damage against humans.

  • farbekriegfarbekrieg Registered User regular
I get that, but how does that gun progression work, it makes absolutely no sense to me

    all revolver types
    lvl 35 gold 319+139 upgraded
lvl 36 white medium name 348+153 upgraded
lvl 36 white spiteful 387 no upgrades

I was hoping my simple attempt to check for crits, or crit size would show that revolvers have something like larger crit size x4 instead of x2, or higher crit rate (56 shots is not likely a large enough sample size to determine crit rate) but christ.

the guns arent even scaling right, gold items should be better than comparible weapons of a similiar lvl. Basically making them ALL reguardless of color horrible garbage drops (worse than cash). I was just curious if anyone knew as to why? Honestly the game would have been better if they pulled the gun type.

  • SpectrumSpectrum Archer of Inferno Chaldea Rec RoomRegistered User regular
It's not unique to guns. In general, orange weapons that are just "standard weapon type" are pretty shit. The orange ones that are "rename of standard weapon type" or "something of word" are the good ones.

    Example:
    Katana is shit
Eviscerator (same model as Katana) is awesome

So ran into Jason for the first time yesterday.
I heard he was tough so I fucked him up good with electric bullets and few close range shotgun bursts to the head..... what I didnt know is that his ass respawns if you move away from cabin, was exploring around it came back and .. OH SHIT!!!! Then I learned he can kill you in one hit.

So after a couple of deaths I take him down again, go get my chainsaw and double checked.. yup still dead. Try to go back the way I arrived and I couldnt climb back up... had to turn around and there was Jason again. I think I died 8 times before I got away.
