Project Management Software

Hi all,

I work at a software services company with a strong emphasis on development (other rev streams include strategy, consulting, service). I've been tasked with identifying a project management solution that meets the needs of as many departments as possible, but with deference given to the needs of the development team.

1. Need to be able to project plan effectively, preferably with the ability to do it a way that lends itself to agile/scrum
2. Need to be able to see the availability of resources accurately, assigning them to various projects/tasks
3. Would like to be able to assign rates to various team members and have cost/budget data for a given project updated in real time
4. Need to be able to track time across a variety of filters (team, project, etc) and report on it in a useful way.
5. Would like to be able to track time on a live basis (check in/check out), but passive time entry is acceptable.
6. Need to be able to set different permission levels for partners and clients.

We're currently using Zoho Projects, and we're in the process of giving Jira with Greenhopper a trial. I'm also looking into At Task, Open Air, and TimeLedger as possible solutions. If anyone else has suggestions that I could be exploring it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We use Jira. It seems to work. I heard theres a new release coming up too that adds a lot of features people have been asking for.

    We use Hansoft Project Manager.
Pretty well tuned for agile/scrum use, has the ability to set different permission levels, and fairly flexible for being able to track time and work. Some decent ability to craft custom reports, and track progress across users as they make progress (assuming folks are actively in the program updating information). A decent amount of overhead/system hog, but if a focus is on getting users more control/visibility into their personal scheduling, and a good amount of customization and a build for Agile is why we went with it.

Less use perhaps for tracking budget/cost, but perhaps that's because we don't track that as much through our PM software.

    Maybe worth checking out.

    I'll look into this.

Basically, Jira works pretty well for our development department. However, the time tracking is kind of crap. I basically need a fully integrated platform that handles scrum, capacity planning, and time tracking without people having to enter information on multiple screens. I'm not sure if there's any one solution that's going to get me everything I need. Still looking.
